We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek! Let me catch my breath. OK. She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia. She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere! She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527 After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on TH-cam. Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas. Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: th-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/w-d-xo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.) Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/w-d-xo.html She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203 She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. th-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/w-d-xo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.) So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995 “Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said. “I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.” “And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.” Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts. In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings. • First is a type of Korean traditional music. • Second is to burn incense on a burner. • Third is to go toward. But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Please analyze her performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”: th-cam.com/video/C6iHh4yBxCo/w-d-xo.html Also, please react to her version of “The Power of Love”: th-cam.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/w-d-xo.html Plus this beautiful duet with her friend Lee Hi where they do Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”: vimeo.com/439148918 And this version of her singing “Oh Holy Night”: vimeo.com/322716334 Here she performs “Lean On Me” before Michael Bolton, who called her a vocal “virtuoso” after her performance: th-cam.com/video/GvsgCllcNPE/w-d-xo.html Wait until you see her duet of David Foster's “The Prayer” with Jeong Ui Geu: th-cam.com/video/rte-q3kunp8/w-d-xo.html Her performance of "Fate" in Korean requires no translation: vimeo.com/198161448 And finally “Will You Be There”: th-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/w-d-xo.html Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: th-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/w-d-xo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I’ll stop gushing now. Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: th-cam.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/w-d-xo.html I know, bananas isn’t it? Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has a bubbly personality. She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently! Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else. As you can see, I am a shameless fan. 😉
@@dianegarcia4876 It may have! I first wrote it up in a much smaller form a couple of years ago. But I have learned so much more about Sohyang since then that I have just kept adding to it. There is much more I could add but I think it might get unwieldy! Ha, ha! Thanks for your comment. 👌😉
Hé is 300% correct she a force of nature and Her performance as felt as much as heard! When she smiles look in her eyes, you see pure joy, the joy God has brought her shoes through ! You need not be a believe your believe her, she is what she believes and she wants us all to be taken care of and to feel Love! Todd, myself and so many are more then fans, we Love her and what she is and stands for!
Hey, friend! I could help you because I am Korean. 1. English, Korean are phonogram, Chinese is ideogram. Although following 蘇香, 燒香, 所向 are pronounced 소향 in Korean, they have different meanings. • a type of Korean traditional music.(蘇香) • to burn incense on a burner.(燒香) • to go toward.(所向) You know Sohyang(소향) is from her full name "Kim Sohyang" - 김소향 in Korean letters, 金昭享 in Chinese letters. Most of Koreans name consists of 3 Chinese letters. In case of her, So(소, 昭) means "light" and Hyang(향, 享) means "enjoy". 2. When it comes to the song "the prayer", I would like to say Kai version(th-cam.com/video/0KIsfLa7nLk/w-d-xo.html) is best, IMAO. 3. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a perfect North American accent and has a bubbly personality. => Right! I suggest the song "part of your world"(th-cam.com/video/iickKimnBds/w-d-xo.html). It proves your comment. Of course, I think you might know all of this :)
@@galanthech Well, I understand most of it. Kim is the clan name she has married into, and Sohyang is what we in the English speaking world would call her first name. (She was given the name Sohyang by her grandmother and believes God inspired her to give Sohyang this name because it means "enjoy the light." It is apparently not common in South Korea.) In North America, Koreans invariably turn things around and put Kim at the end of their name to keep with British tradition. If Sohyang lived in Canada or the US she would go by the name of Sohyang Kim. Do you by any chance know what Sohyang's unmarried clan name was? The Chinese/Korean spelling is probably something I'll never understand. I had a Chinese pharmacist for years and she would tell me there are more dialects of Chinese than we can imagine and she will have customers from a particular village or other whom she simply cannot understand. Their "Chinese" is something she has never heard before! And this is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada! I also understand that there are multiple dialects of Korean just in South Korea, 11 or so? I am not good with languages so I actually prefer it when Sohyang does her interviews in English or someone does a good English translation. Thanks for the info! 👌
Respectfully, please listen to 'Everyone' to fully appreciate this incredible womans true talent...... It's an absolute emotional masterpiece! She sings in part Korean and part English. If 'Bridge over Troubled Water' made you teary eyed, make sure you have tissues available for 'Everyone'. I'm not an overly emotional man, but this brought tears to my eyes. The lyrics reflect how Sohyang lives her life and it would offer some perspective to read her incredible back story first. 'Everyone' is in my opinion 7.5 minutes of vocal perfection. How this petite, beautiful lady has the stamina to sing at the intensity she does for 7.5 minutes is staggering!!
“Everyone” is the best, but save it up for a bit, there nowhere to go after you hear that one. Indescribably good. No other singer on the planet could pull off the vocal and emotion. Couple of other good ones are “Arirang Alone”, “Fate”, “You Raise Me Up”, “Where Are You”, and very recently a duet of “Wildflower”. Love Sohyang and love the introduction to k pop through her. Wildflower is really a strong song too. There’s a live video by park hyo shin, original artist, that’s pretty good also. Sohyang is just the one… you are so right.
"Everyone" next please! th-cam.com/video/S9J1k_zmo24/w-d-xo.html 💗💗💗 This version has English subtitles, A MUST to understand the touching acapella moment. Copyright safe too!
People gets triggered, Specially about Dimash and Morisette. They would say mean things but don't let it get to you. They think, all they can see and feel is what everything there is. so if a person sees more in some other artist and compliment it. all hell will break loose for them. I think and feel exact same way, her voice and abilities are used to express the emotion in most detailed way rather than creating an epic moment and put a good show for people. people confuses the beauty of the vocals (those gets famous really easily) and beauty of the emotions express via a beautiful voice. SoHyang becomes the song when she sings it, all is for the song and its emotions and nothing is about herself. all of her performance are masterpieces because of it, each and everyone of those songs feels like she's describing a movie she saw and how and what it made her feel and her own feelings and thoughts to some one who didn't get to see it.
I second on "Everyone" as so many have already requested it. A masterpiece performance but also her most difficult song which unfortunately she never sang again.
Here's a bunch of excellent Sohyang performances. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities. I'm so sick of seeing that so many reactors are doing so obvious and pretentious reaction. One of the few genuine reaction that is hard to find. very fresh..
You aren't alone. I've seen 9 other very good vocal coaches stop analyzing and just watch the performance with misty eyes, and a few must reach for facial tissues. Be sure to have some at hand when you react to "Arirang Alone" (Immortal Song 2) -- it's an epic performance.
I have been watching her on a daily basis for 5 years now. There have been virtually very few days I have missed. She is a true inspiration to me and not just because of her singing. What a wonderful woman!!!
I agree with what you said about her having much more raw emotion than those other two. I do feel a lot of emotion from Dimash sometimes, but for the most part his performances are very calculated and there’s nothing wrong with that. Morrissette on the other hand doesn’t really make me feel anything. But she’s very impressive.
Sohyang said that she broke down a cried several times when practising this song for the performance because it is so emotional. I'm glad she was able to get it out of her system for this performance because it is the greatest I have ever seen. I'll put a biography of her above that will help you understand what an incredible woman Sohyang is. PS You have one technical problem with your reaction video. You need to make all of your audio tracks of the same amplitude or loudness. Sohyang's performance was much, much quieter than your remarks, thus when we turn up the volume to hear Sohyang your remarks came through much too loudly. There should be a setting called "normalization" or some such similar name in the audio part of your video editing program. Just run all your audio tracks through that before uploading and all will be fine. 😉👌
You must listen to song;t 'Everyone' she is so raw,she speaks one line in the song and I lost it and i cried.Sohyang is in tears you can hear it in her voice. It's a gospel song and Sohyang is a Christian and a cance survival. She knows what she singing about. Its is in Korean but you can take subtitels. Most difficult and long song to sing! OMG !! LOL!!
Embarrassingly, l'd been moved to tears halfway through whenever I hear Sohyang sing this song even if this could've been the 101 times already, no kidding, I've lost count. Couldn't have agreed with you more, nobody, not even the original singer (of this song) has ever hit me as hard as Sohyang.
There's no doubt that So Hyang is a top tier vocalist. Her rendition of Everyone and You Raise Me Up are my 2 most favorites. Another amazing Korean group that you must definitely react to is Forestella. Please react to their covers of Bohemian Rhapsody, Je Suis Malade, Hijo de la Luna just to name a few. Thanks.
if my memory is correct, as I was a fan of the show (which featured So-Hyang), during interview, the producer was so close to pull her out of the show, because she couldn't stop crying, even during final rehearsals. as great as So-Hyang is, she gets very emotional, and at times too much at fault imo, but for how she could pull thru, shows not only her professionalism on stage, but what a miraculous work of performance it is, for something she fought so hard to make it work, with her faith in God.
Well I agree she is my Favourite all time ! No singer in my 69 years delivers emotion everyone and give their alleine she does! Also she is of such Great Character !
I find you are so refreshing as a reactor. You are not afraid to let everyone know that Sohyang (So-Young) is your favorite performer over Dimash and Morrisset. Where as other reactors are afraid to make a comment because of losing subs. As many artist are fantastic singers I feel as you do the passion and emotion Sohyang sings with is heart felt and not a simple performance. Two of my favorite performances you should listen to are "Everyone" which she stated as her most difficult and my favorite acoustical performance "Love Poem". Love your content keep up the fantastic work.
Thank you! I’ve been straight up told to only say Morissette and Dimash are the best. But that’s not really true…I just show up and give what I honestly think!
@@crrissa_the_cyberbard I thank you for being honest as a reactor. I think your honesty and sincerity will make you one of the more respected reactors and bring you many viewers who want real opinions about their favorite singers. Great work!👍
I love Morrissette and Dimash too, but only Sohyang makes me cry because of what you also noticed - she’s a passionate performer and you buy every single word that she is singing about, all of this without appearing like she was putting on a show. It’s never theatrical or showy. We know she could hit Bb5 in her sleep and do riffs and runs like no other, but if the piece doesn’t call for it she keeps it simple. One of her performances that I loved the most is Misty (an Ella Fitzgerald cover) on Begin Again Korea. Just some jazzy intimate vocals accompanied by just a keyboard that bring people, including fellow singers, to tears. One of those singers from the same episode even mentions that hearing her sing really inspires him and makes him feel like he needs to try harder and be better at his craft. Regardless of who my favorite is, I think it’s just plain sad that some people believe you can worship and be loyal to only one singer. Why so close minded when there are all these amazing performers from all over the world to enjoy?
@@crrissa_the_cyberbard I to faced the same dilemma, what do you do when you appreciate the technical improbability that is Dimash. Also there is the mind-blowing range and ability of Morissette who can leave you breathless. Then this little pocket rocket who melts your eyebrows, and even she is not your "favorite". No my favorite, not best, is a young lady from Dimash country. Daneliya Tuleshova for some reason has accessed my heart in a way that no other singer has ever reached. She just turned 16 in July and has a voice that just is mesmerizing to me. She will not wow you with her range. Nor does she amaze you with her riffs and runs. I'm giving you a link to where she first burst on the scene. Daneliya was just 10 years old when she sang Demi Lovato's 'Stone Cold' as her blind audition for The Voice Kids Ukraine 2017. That was the first half of her audition. That part went viral and has had over 80 million views since that night. She also has 1.4 million subscribers to date. Daneliya was asked to sing an encore by the judges which she sang as well or even better than her first song. Daneliya went on to win the competition and is still the youngest to have ever won that competition. She was also the first non-Ukrainian to win the competition when she won at 11 years old. I'll stop now, OH! one more thing Dimash has called her a national treasure. th-cam.com/video/jGUqIU6u8Ew/w-d-xo.html Daneliya at 10 'Stone Cold' second song 'Try May' pronounced tree my. Please watch the whole audition.
Sohyang is an incredible vocalists but us fans we also love her for who she is as a person. After I learnt she was a cancer survivor I felt that this song really was about that and how God was her bridge over troubled times. That she is sharing that with us. You get that rawness because she isn't just singing a pretty song, she lived it. I would suggest 'Arirang Alone' next. That is a beautiful Korean cultural song.
You hit the nail on the head with what makes her so special. Yes she has the healthiest and clearest mixed belt you will ever hear but she uses it not to show off but to help her tell the story she's sharing with the audience. The difference between her and other great singers is that she just opens herself while she's on stage and almost invites us up there to experience it with her. There's no way to fake that part of her performances and you always come away feeling something and that never gets old. More please!!!!
If you have any chance to check her "I will always love you" cover, please watch the full song version which was done on the TV show called "Begin Again season Korea"
We all love her voice. Thank you for your lovely reaction. Next definitely " You raise me up!" And.. " Lean on me" ... last song have to be " Everyone", because it is the most difficult and emotional song. Every fan who love SoHyang knows it!!
I so agree with you about So Hyang's emotional conveyance! She happens to be a musical beast who has become a singer largely to bring happiness to people (her words), not to act like a diva (she just happens to be a diva, ha ha). She did not sing publicly until the age of 19. She's self-taught and as a teenager, she listened to and sung over and over Mariah Carey's album "Music Box'. Once, after having sung for a while she was visiting the US and had a few lessons with Seth Riggs, which really helped her with her mixed voice (perhaps the best mixed voice in the world). I wonder when she was singing a Music Box song she knew just how incredible she would become in the following couple of decades. I have never heard anyone as gifted as this little lady. There is something magical about her. If you want a delicate song by her, react to 'Misty' from the Begin Again Korean concerts that were held during the pandemic. It is so sweet. For another powerhouse song there is 'I Have Nothing' (Whitney Houston song). The best video of that song, by far, is from the DMC Festival and she is in a blue dress. It is really mind blowing. Thanks for your great reaction. It is hard not to be moved by this Korean savant. Links below to the mentioned songs. th-cam.com/video/_ivvpK3UMlw/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/w-d-xo.html
I sincerely admire your honest and courageous words. Most reactors are moderately praised and impressed by their subscribers, but it's really not common for reactors to be as honest as you are.I really like your reaction.
I agree with all you opinion about her 100% .period she's best. Of the best. ! I listened her everyday around 5 years. ! How it's posible im tears 😭😭💔 every day. Same songs. Like first time.
I agree with you as SoHyang being my favorite singer. The way she connects to a song and how she conveys it to listeners are second to none. She is just phenomenal in my book! If I may indulge, I think one of the reasons SoHyang pours every emotion and her soul into this song especially may have something to do with the fact that she cannot have children of her own. I believe she was around 20 that just after marriage she learned she had uterine cancer. She survived because of early detection but as a result she is infertile. As she sings this song I can imagine her singing this the children she was never able to have. I think her emotions from not having children of her own is what we see displayed through her music especially in songs like this. Don’ get me wrong, SoHyang is able to pour all her feelings(the full gambit) into her songs. She has stated that she hopes her music helps people get through difficult times. SoHyang and her music is truly an amazing gift to us all.
Also, her more recent performances are less theatrical as they're not competition pieces and even more technical (she's improved from here, believe it or not). I'd recommend The Promise with Jung Seung Hwan, Misty (she absolutely slam dunks the jazz style and she's a technical marvel here) from Begin Again 3 and I Won't Give Up also from Begin Again 3, and my personal favorite Love Poem (originally by IU) from Begin Again Open Mic. But I do think you need to hear her I Will Always Love You (from Begin Again 3). From her very first word, she'll hook your heart in a way nobody has for me singing this song since Whitney herself.
Great reaction I really like this one from SoHyang. Now I looked at all the videos you have on your chanel and I am surprised that out of all the singers you have done especially Dimash that you havent done any Diana Ankudinova videos at all Dimash has recommend that anyone who likes his music should give her a try I dont know if no one has ever told you about her yet, She is a Russian singer that is absolutely mind blowing if you want to be impressed please check her out I would suggest that you start with wicked game cover she was 15 when she did that one she is now just turned 19 if you want something recent try her cover of cant help falling in love (Elvis) if you do check her out I will be watching for it and then I will tell you all that you would ever want or need to know about this Amazing artist then.
Hear me out... you have no idea yet lol. I got hooked on her from all the reactions to all the frequently requested singers. No one has the variety and talent. I will say this for an idea. This performance ain't even in my top ten of hers. Everyone will say do Everyone...do Lean on Me... do You Raise Me Up... Personally there will be time for those greats. The problem is so many do those and stop and just oh boy you miss out on the best. To me from masked singer you have Home, Mona Lisa and especially Breathe that you just can't miss. Of course you can't miss Arirang Alone from immortals songs 2 most of all. You can't miss Fate from I am singer. It's my current favorite and so few ever even get there. It's such a ride. Misty from begin again korea is the other must hear. I have nothing is epic of course. She has as many as Dimash but I like them all just a lot more. There are a lot but you are really missing out if you don't get to all those. And wherever you are is another. She just has this big stack of powerful performances. The end of Dream is nuts. Her rapping Day Day from masked singer is even epic lol. Please don't think just the most requested are it, because I wonder if half of them even found the other gems.
Yeah her diction is pretty amazing considering that she never had any formal training in English except that she learned English by watching Disney movies when she was a kid.
I really enjoyed your reaction! This is the second video of Soyhang I watched . As a matter-of-fact, this is how I found you. I wanted to mention that she's a huge part of all her arrangements.

Enjoyed your reaction! Definitely check out her covers of the classics "You Raise Me Up" and "Lean on Me," as well as "Everyone" and "Arirang Alone" as others have mentioned!
You felt that! That's all that matters. I love what you said, "She was [fully] there", not just technically (and we know Dimash - who blows my mind regularly) but emotionally and connecting the meaning of the words to the listeners.
What a lovely reaction! This performance almost always gets me teary-eyed, even though I've seen it hundreds of times. Yes, Sohyang is my favorite singer, notwithstanding other outstanding and phenomenal singers out there, precisely for the reason you stated why you love Sohyang. When you raised your arms during the performance, it feels like a gesture that recognizes the triumph of the human spirit and the discovery of goodness within. That's what this Sohyang's performance represents to me. Also when you just laid back, seemingly surrendering yourself to Sohyang's vocal magic, that is the moment Sohyang followers share - we simply just sit back and let her voice bathe us in bliss, foregoing all other distractions such as observation or analysis. It is not a surprise "Bridge Over Troubled Water" collected so many recommendations from her fans for its emotional impact, but it is hardly an exception to Sohyang's spellbinding stages she has produced over the years. While you may enjoy the experience regardless what performance you choose to watch next, I'd throw in my cents for her magical stage of "Arirang Alone" when she sang an modernized folk song in her native tongue. Sohyang is without doubt the best vocalist in the world today. Sohyang doesn't sing for money (as she has rejected David Foster, Sony Music & other western record label contracts to be famous commercially). She sings for her belief/faith, comfort her fans & to be free. Also not only was she an ovarian cancer survivor but she also has to go through pneumonia in her singing career which should be impossible for any singer. But she did it through her faith. So please react to the following below: Sohyang - I have nothing th-cam.com/video/CFtRUSPxcas/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - If I ain’t got you th-cam.com/video/cNrM2RJ93JE/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - I will always love you th-cam.com/video/DO845EqU3eE/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - Everyone th-cam.com/video/H5e7MPre7iY/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - I’ll be there th-cam.com/video/tmVMbzHpg6Y/w-d-xo.html Sohyang et al - Day Day th-cam.com/video/bBQwhC_LLek/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - Arirang Alone th-cam.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - Misty th-cam.com/video/5oBdTq0S_LU/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - You raise me up th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - Amazing Grace th-cam.com/video/mBUVs3npVlY/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - Lean on me th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=sohyang+lean+on+me Sohyang - The Power of Love th-cam.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - Marvin Gaye th-cam.com/video/xmOBsRsFENg/w-d-xo.html Sohyang - The Prayer th-cam.com/video/CBKKCMhk0no/w-d-xo.html
I am a big fan of Sohyang. Your reaction is the best and most favorite reaction! Your comments on her performance are the exactly same as mine. She always pours out all herself into her songs and moves viewers' hearts. Love you~~^^♡♡ Would you please react to Sohyang's "I will always love you."
A masterpiece if an arrangement and mind blowing vocals from an elite level vocalist, one of the best on the planet. Love this version, she made it unique like her. You don't just listen to Sohyang, you feel her, when she sings. No other singer does this to me. Thank you for the reaction, really enjoyed it. Check out her rendition of You Raise Me Up next, make sure its the version from Immortal Songs 2 (2018).
I couldn't agree more. There are other singers with equal or superior technique but the authenticity of her emotional connection with the song and audience is second to none. You should check out Everyone. Many fans consider it her masterwork. Also, she has some more recent performances from the TV show Begin Again Korea that I think you would like. They are simpler and more intimate, and some are ensembles with younger, popular, Korean singers (who probably make much more money than Sohyang but seem to view her as a sort of goddess). Misty, Love Poem, and the pop hiphop Day Day (fun to hear Sohyang rap) are some of my favorites from the show.
She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Here is the interview where Sohyang related the events: th-cam.com/video/EqeE_1nP-Kk/w-d-xo.html (Be sure to turn on English subtitles.)
Here is the version of “I Have Nothing” Oprah, David Foster, Whitney's former manager and the rest watched on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/T4UyIMkdy4M/w-d-xo.html
She preceded it with this blockbuster: vimeo.com/312061203
She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. Sohyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. th-cam.com/video/rl-jX9kBsEs/w-d-xo.html (Again, turn on English subtitles.)
So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!
On Oct. 5, 2020, it was revealed that Sohyang turned down _yet another_ contract offer, this time from Sony Music US. www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200921000995
“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being.
Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light."

Here’s an English language interview with her that I’m sure you will enjoy: th-cam.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/w-d-xo.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews.
Hey, did your Sohyang's biography got longer? Didn't remember it was this long the last time I read it! lol Good job!!! 💗
• a type of Korean traditional music.(蘇香)
• to burn incense on a burner.(燒香)
• to go toward.(所向)
You know Sohyang(소향) is from her full name "Kim Sohyang" - 김소향 in Korean letters, 金昭享 in Chinese letters.
You know a singer is special when a voice teacher just stop analyzing and instead just sit there and enjoy the performance.
YESSSS!! 🙌
So hyang always put in 110% in all of her performances.
Make sure you get the subtitles to get the full impact for Everyone!
Yes, and you'd better prepare a lot of tissues, you're going to need them...
'Everyone' th-cam.com/video/S9J1k_zmo24/w-d-xo.html (English subtitles)
“Everyone” is the best, but save it up for a bit, there nowhere to go after you hear that one. Indescribably good. No other singer on the planet could pull off the vocal and emotion. Couple of other good ones are “Arirang Alone”, “Fate”, “You Raise Me Up”, “Where Are You”, and very recently a duet of “Wildflower”. Love Sohyang and love the introduction to k pop through her. Wildflower is really a strong song too. There’s a live video by park hyo shin, original artist, that’s pretty good also. Sohyang is just the one… you are so right.
I think Everyone is the best too, my emotions was a roller coaster in that song!
"Everyone" next please! th-cam.com/video/S9J1k_zmo24/w-d-xo.html 💗💗💗
This version has English subtitles, A MUST to understand the touching acapella moment. Copyright safe too!
I totally agree “everyone” is a very beautiful emotional song.
She did a great cover of LEAN ON ME in a contest in front of Michael Bolton. Incredible.
Your little nodding at the end says it all...lol
"Everyone" with the English sub. Her song that breaks my heart the most is "Hug Me" and for that you'd really need the subtitles.
I feel the same.
Sohyang is the best singer of this era. A singer whose live performance is better than the record! It's a dream, hope, and touching.
So Hyang and Lara Fabian
more SoHyang reactions please !!
We love you Charissa!!! Okay, okay, we know...you love Sohyang more tho! LOL
4:00, girl, you talking over some of the best notes in that performance! I forgive you though, since you seem to get how amazing she is.
Sohyang's song is as soft as a feather, but in an instant it shakes my heart like a storm
throw away
Perhaps your next reaction will be "I have nothing". it's a masterpiece
I second on "Everyone" as so many have already requested it. A masterpiece performance but also her most difficult song which unfortunately she never sang again.
Sohyang is unbelievable! A complete package.
Why have I never heard of this singer??? Perfection!
Welcome to perhaps the best female singer currently in the world. She really is astonishing with every single performance.
She is SO good on so many levels
You got Jackpot today.
Here's a bunch of excellent Sohyang performances. Many are from competitions where she pulls out all the stops and goes into vocal beast mode. The last 5 are more restrained. You can alternate between the styles, just to experience the contrasts and see her range of abilities.

You can watch them even before your favorite vocal coach!
thanks for your reaction, If you want emotions please react to Everyone such a masterpiece
Sohyang so underrated...
She is not underrated.....many of US love her....She is Simply not known enough, being Asian and not American ....
her mixed voice is so good
I'm so sick of seeing that so many reactors are doing so obvious and pretentious reaction. One of the few genuine reaction that is hard to find. very fresh..
Thanks! I literally teared up. She is SO good. I love her
You aren't alone.
@Rosannasfriend…if you haven’t yet please check Mori’s “Could you be Messiah” th-cam.com/video/ghI8HLG_JuM/w-d-xo.html
I also agree. Love..
She is the real deal, pouring emotions and radiating the message, her rendition is phenomenal.
OMG !! LOL!!
Can never get enough of So Hyang!
So beautiful yet so talented. Not fair! hahaha
I already know she’s the best thing are you reacted to, and I’ve only seen a couple of your reactions, lol.
Thanks.
UP 👍💯
if my memory is correct, as I was a fan of the show (which featured So-Hyang),
during interview, the producer was so close to pull her out of the show,
because she couldn't stop crying, even during final rehearsals.
as great as So-Hyang is, she gets very emotional, and at times too much at fault imo,
but for how she could pull thru, shows not only her professionalism on stage,
but what a miraculous work of performance it is, for something she fought so hard
to make it work, with her faith in God.
sohyang
1. you raise me up
2. lean on me
3. Oh holly night
4. Upon this rock (Brooklyn)
first reaction please.~ ♥
Well I agree she is my Favourite all time ! No singer in my 69 years delivers emotion everyone and give their alleine she does! Also she is of such Great Character !
Wow that was insane
You've got to be kidding...insanely good!
I saw her today in her concert 🥰
She healed my body and soul for her angelic voice. 😍
😱👍
YOU SAW HER? LISTENED TO HER SING IN PERSON????? I'm so jealous...
Were you on June, 18th in Suwon concert? I was there too~ 😊
Thank you for the emotional reaction. I especially liked that it didn`t stop in the song. 20 songs left ////
100% agree with you! She is my fav singer above Dimash and Morisette.
x3
Singers either have the "it" factor or don't...Sohyang embodies it...

Please continue to discover Sohyang! She is really just the best
Heard of K-pop but never of a Korean gospel singer. Wow!
So Hyang "Where are you " next? Vimeo has a video of it with English subs and there is no annoying cut ins. See this high belt Queen in action.
소향의 노래는 감동 받을 준비 안 하고 듣다가는,
감동 쓰나미에 휩쓸려 버린다.
그래서 준비 철저하게 하고 들어야 한다.
She's my favorite too!
A MASTERCLASS performance!
Korea's pride and best vocal master Sohyang World Bless you 🥰🥰🥰
Also, her more recent performances are less theatrical as they're not competition pieces and even more technical (she's improved from here, believe it or not).
Yes, "Misty' by her is absolutely phenomenal!
Incredible singer!
Thank you for loving SoHyang~~ She is a gift from heaven and a precious treasure of South Korea. God bless you always~!!!
Just out of this world !!! 😱
Great reaction! You deserve more subscribers.
Thank you, friend!
YES!!!!!
BRAVO!!! 👏👏 This reaction video was a BRILLIANT way in answering your critics of what raw emotion is! "The emotion is there..you can see it!" 👏👏😉😉💕💕
Sohyang who sings the soul. She is actually so humble that many fans like her. In "Begin Again Korea", She sang "my heart will go on". I recommend it
Yeah her diction is pretty amazing considering that she never had any formal training in English except that she learned English by watching Disney movies when she was a kid.
사랑해요 💜 💜
Epic live performance!
Everyone, 7mins run. Her lungs never stop breathing out
She is dope!
Most Underrated Koreans.... Son Heungmin and Sohyang
yes it is!!
Queen so-hyang
I really enjoyed your reaction! This is the second video of Soyhang I watched . As a matter-of-fact, this is how I found you. I wanted to mention that she's a huge part of all her arrangements.
Please react to vocal goddess Sohyang singing Everyone, Misty, If I Aint Got You, I Will Always Love You, I Have Nothing, and her own song Stay. Here is her doing Michael Jackson's Will You Be There way back in 2010 -> th-cam.com/video/nBdSpexUxik/w-d-xo.html

OMG
Aring Alone Next!
I love So Hyang! ❤️ Kisses from Italy.... 👍
You felt that! That's all that matters. I love what you said, "She was [fully] there", not just technically (and we know Dimash - who blows my mind regularly) but emotionally and connecting the meaning of the words to the listeners.
The words were literally an emotional bridge from her to them.
Link: th-cam.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/w-d-xo.html
She's a vocal goddess with heart like no other. Check out her singing Misty and If I Aint Got You outdoors Live
But she did it through her faith. thanx reaction!!!
Queen sohyang!!!
love it!!!❤️
She's amazing
I am a big fan of Sohyang. Your reaction is the best and most favorite reaction! Your comments on her performance are the exactly same as mine. She always pours out all herself into her songs and moves viewers' hearts. Love you~~^^♡♡ Would you please react to Sohyang's "I will always love you."
Welcome to sohyang world, coach🥰 please reaction sohyang you raise me up 🙏
A masterpiece if an arrangement and mind blowing vocals from an elite level vocalist, one of the best on the planet.
Did you known So Hyang actually contemplated in quiting singing because she thought she wasn't good enough and people didn't like her voice?!
All singers have that. You can trade in an instrument, when someone says they don’t like your voice. Ya can’t trade that in. 😿
So Hyang's performance here is a true Tour De Force.
Not many singer can deliver a performance like her with power and conviction.
you reaction so gooood ^^
I totally agree ❤️
welcome to Sohyang world~
Wonderful, Wonderful Sohyang ♥️ thank you
The songs she sang on 'masked singer' are amazing.
Mic drop!!! 👏👏👏
Congrats on 10k subs!!!🎈🎊🎉
