  • Krautrock was the name given to progressive and experimental electronic music from the late 60s and 70s in Germany. Kraftwerk was a band with roots in Krautrock but who branched out and acheived mainstream success. Cluster, who was comprised of Roedelius and Moebius. Conny Plank was another seminal band.
Krautrock was an influence on people such as David Bowie and Brian Eno. In this video I go through the Krautrock and Kraftwerk albums in my collection. If you like this video, please press like and subscribe for future videos.

Hi Joe . Thanks for the intro into Kraftrock , Cluster and Krautrock. They were , it seems , ahead of their time in terms of computer literacy and synthesizing their sound . There were , I think , a lot of new movements going on in the Arts in post war Germany . The old cliche , music is universal , still stands as relevant . Only my thoughts . Thanks again . Peter

Fascinating stuff Joseph. I thought you weren't going to mention Bowie and Berlin, but then - you did! Great to see the Kraftwerk albums on vinyl - I love the cover of Autobahn. I suppose the other big name of the Kraut-rock genre would be Can. One of the best gigs I ever saw was the band Solaris, featuring the dub bass player Jah Wobble, Jacki Leibezeit (the former drummer from Can), and Harold Budd. They played a cellar bar venue in Leeds and raised the roof. Leibezeit is an extraordinary drummer - he plays very stripped down, mathematical beats, quite simple really but it's the way he uses repetition, dynamics and very slight/gradual variation of rhythm that really gets people going. Cheers for now, I need to catch up with your Forbidden Planet and funk videos.

Hi James, always a pleasure to receive your insightful and informative comments. Hmm, don't really know anything about Can, although it seems they were pretty prominent in the krautrock scene. Another bit of scholarship from The Professor! So the drummer played with Harold Budd, interesting how it is all connected. Sounds like a good show. Thanks again for watching and speak to you soon. Cheers.

I recommend the album Future Days as a good introduction to Can!

Hi Lis, welcome back and nice to see you again. Trans Europe Express, Man Machine and Computer World are all great albums. However Computer World is my favorite. After Computer World, their albums were not as compelling.
Come to think of it, perhaps you should pick up an album called The Mix first. It's a selection of many of their best tracks (many of them from Computer World). The cool thing about The Mix, however, is that all of the tracks are remixed with later technology. They are in some ways groovier than the originals. However, the originals have their own charm. Maybe get The Mix, and then seek out the originals, especially Computer World. Or start with Computer World since that is excellent all the way through. Cheers, Joe.

Kraftwerk`s album the mix features one of their greatest ever tracks. The remix of Trans Europe Express. Everything about the original version of T.E.E is perfect except for the spoken lyrics where they talk about Iggy Pop and David Bowie. That part of the original vocal completely ruined the whole track for me. It really dates the track. The version on the Mix album has this vocal part removed and sounds so much more futuristic and timeless for having it removed. This is now the definitive version of T.E.E.

Kraftwerk are as important to the history of popular music as the Beatles. Kraftwerks music still to this day sounds like it comes from the future.
