I think it's sweet to see that Sam Long is so sensitive and socially anxious. I can definitely relate and sympathize. Speaking from experience, long is clearly a pretty insecure person the way he has to prop himself up with words and then gets brought down as soon as he meets social resistance. That said I don't think Laidlaw is any better off, insecurity wise. He's just better at playing the game and hiding his anxiety. In that sense Long is closer to growing beyond it from not being able to play the game as well.
Sam does really need to work on his social anxiety and choice of words because people are misjudging him. He was never really smack talking, he is a too honest, kinda awkward, and still greatly a child. But I think he has creating power in him, he just needs more control or to let loose. Both would work.

The mature anxious person would air it openly and courageously and vulnerably by just admitting it, ownning their feelings and not hiding behind joking or self agrandising or antagonizing others. I get why triathlon fans dont want to see this type of content, but its undoubtedly what drives new people into watching it and is therefor a net positive for the sport. Let there be rivalries, let there be battles. Its exciting to watch and nobody is getting hurt
