That's the thing about these home goods stores. You get intimidated because they're selling for $20-40 what you put in $60 worth of work into, then you feel it in your hands and it's not even close. Even if it's a soft wood like pine, it still feels a lot better than most target/hobby lobby stuff.

I just got back from a 7 day cruise to three cities in Mexico. Most tourists took pictures of the beaches, food, tropical birds, etc. I took pictures of wood items like benches, fences, wall art, furniture…… Yep, major woodworking nerd. Now, I have 9 new ideas to create for summer. Can’t wait to see how they’ll sell.

I was at the Hobby Lobby in Paducah with the wife yesterday taking pictures of the things she liked so that I could make them for her. It's crazy how much they charge for this stuff when its so simple to make.

Paducah store is better than the Carbondale, IL store. It is fun 2 check stores against each other 2 see differences. I love watching Matt's videos but haven't made anything of his yet. Still trying to make planters with seat between them and had 2 guess the sizes. Matt tells us about sizes and angles. Still learning how to use the different things husband owns( saws and planner,etc.).

I’m gonna have to go with pallet wood builds. Fence pickets in Alberta are 9 bucks for 1x6x6’ 😱 great tips though, I’ve been making the honeycomb shelves using some slats from an ikea bed frame that someone left beside the dumpsters at my condo

I am pretty fortunate, we have a wood mill down the road a couple miles and they put out the 8"x8' and 3"x48" scrap slats of various types of wood out on the road to grab. About once every few months I'll swing by and load my truck, plan them to wanted thickness and bring it on to the house for my little projects.

I bought that A frame display, second hand years ago. Back then, they had a grey wash finish on it. Not made very well. The bottoms are made of the same material doll houses are made of. I think I paid $100 for it, second hand! But I needed it for a vendor market at the time, so I paid it. I added some shredded brown craft paper and my product in them. They looked great.
I'll be glad to make another one that is better materials. Thanks!

I'm from Nottinghamshire, England and although we don't have Big Box Stores we do have similar types of outlets. • @denvernow7294

You can get advanced angles on a miter saw. Example: If you want a 65 degree cut, double side tape a random piece of wood to the non rotation portion of your miter base then cut it at 20 degrees. Leave it taped down as is and rotate your blade back to 90 degrees. Take the piece you want the 65 on and set it perpendicular to the taped piece so it now sits ahainst the cut at a 20 degree angle to the blade. When you cut the 2nd piece of wood it will create a 65 degree cut. Essentially you've created a 20 degree stop with the 1st piece of wood.

These are great ideas... I'd really love to hear from anyone who has had success building and selling items like this. What type of income were you able to achieve?

The best part abt this series is that Hobby Lobby is *notorious* for stealing the designs of independent artists, & neither paying them nor crediting them. I got started in woodworking & salvage art after learning Art Journaling & folk art techniques.
Not a day went by without an instructor or author finding their original creations copied *in detail* on a piece of Hobby Lobby decor or furniture.
Heck, just last weekend, I needed outdoor fabric, & HL was the only local source. Lo & Behold, they had new upholstery fabric, hanging nearby & it copied one of my favorite hand-stitching designers, Alabama Chanin. (Look her up, she's fantastic.) She published five books that literally *taught me* how to sew, & then taught me how to make it beautiful.
The thought that a bunch of baby woodworkers are now gonna make Hobby Lobby Decor (but higher quality, & made in the USA) just makes my morning.

How do you handle shipping & shipping cost? Local pickup? These items don’t fit in standard priority boxes. Thanks for all the insight. 🙏🏻

Hey I have a question for you. How long do you wait before building something with treated pickets? Ones I get are always damp and clog sandpaper

Just subscribed a few days ago because of finding these videos. One question I have is would Facebook be a good place to market this stuff? Also can you try to include more that don't require a table saw? If you can, that would be awesome! Thanks!

@J anything that he does on a table saw, you can do with a skillsaw or jigsaw. Use what you have.

When dealing with fence pickets or pallet wood in making these projects, how important is it for the wood to be flat and square? Aka should I joint and plane the boards to deal with whatever twist or warp or cupping that is present, or should I toss those boards and keep hunting for something that's not messed up?

    • @wrenchforhire
      @wrenchforhire ปีที่แล้ว +2

Around here the fence pickets are normally dripping with water, my local big box hates that I will sort through a whole bunk of boards and only take 30 or so, I don't want to have to work around the knots😁. I purchase a couple of weeks in advance to keep a running supply on hand, and store them on end so they can dry out, then depending on the project I plane them flat and square the side

Hey bro. I had to stop during the vid when you mentioned the 1/16 plywood. More than likely it is a door skin. 30/68 . I would guess though that it's more expensive than a 1/4 inch luan plywood sheet.

because evryone has a workshop at home full of tools. at the shop you dont pay only for the piece but labour for the piece, logistics and employees at the shop and sort. all these diy stuff needs a bunch of things in advance in order to actually save money on doing these things. it is a fun thing to do of course nothing is wrong with it. simply doesnt actually pays off at the end.
