By looking at the "Kami katana" you can damn near see why they stopped producing, it looked as if they ran out of such beautiful materials and time to make a such delicate blade, not to mention the tsuba, saya, and hilt look awesome.
As far as modern sword smiths go, Hanwei really gives you the best bang for your buck. The Kami katana is a true work of art, but I like that they also have product lines such as the "Practical Series" that give you a quality blade for cutting practice without worrying about destroying a beautiful sword.
I bought the practical katana, took some tameshigiri lessons and had some fun. I have nothing to compare to but it is a decent, sharp katana. Needs better balance towards the handle I feel, maybe more of a curve and longer handle…but that’s just my opinion based off what little I know.
Agreed. My Hanwei katanas out preforms all of my other katanas. It looks great, feels great, functions amazingly over all of my other brands. Most bang for your buck is exactly what I tell people
the thing i like about katana's over medieval longswords is the craftsmanship, they put their soul and blood into making them and they treat it like a living creature, an extension of ones body, but apart from that the longsword beats it in every other aspect
First time watching your vids. I have to say its refreshing to see someone doing this comparison that actually knows how to cut with them. Nice job man.
I actually saw some of the katanas used by the Imperial Japanese army in WWII on sale at one of the Gun and Knife shows at the WNC Agricultural Center. Upon lifting it, I felt that it was like lifting a weight bar at the gym. I think you would have to do bell crunch repetitions with 25-50lb weights for any one of your arms to eventually carry it as lightly and smoothly as a kitchen knife or letter opener.

Single bevel swords can be sharpened with a semi-loose fine grit belt sander/grinder. The natural bowing of the belt aligns with the natural bevel if you know what you're doing. Skallagrim did a vid on this a few years ago. Works really well. Over heating is an issue though.
To me swords and blades have been an art to the point of being near a spiritual affair, as I grew and learned different beliefs behind weapons and cultures, I’ve always felt that buying and being proud of a cheap sword speaks to how much you value your own assets and esteem.

The cheapest katanas in japan are like 3000 dollars. Also if it doesn't have a certificate of authencity that all katanas in japan get its probably not a real japanese katana. Now it might look like I'm trying to be a gate keeper but I'm talking about the legal definition in japan. I'm not saying Japanese katanas are better in fact they are probably worse than the 2000 dollar katana in this video in many ways. I have the Kami Katana, have had it for years, and love it, Though yes it's heavy and I did not know it when I first got it. So lifting some weights to get strength in the shoulders and wrests work every well. The main issue I have with the Kami is I wish the handle was just a little longer, I have another of Chen's Katana's that has a longer handle to it and weights about the same, and you can feel the difference in the swings just by that change. But other than that Its a wonderful Katana.
I just ordered a Katana from HanBon Forge in China. It's closer to the $200 than $2000 but for my limited purposes I'll be happy to have one, and perhaps feel a little of the 'spirit of the Samurai'. Enjoyed your video, though not surprised the second sword which costs 10x more than the first, somehow also managed to perform better.
I found a katana in my old house today. My first thought after picking it up was "wow, it's heavy and sturdy." The blade is still sharp -- and it's been abandoned in the house for over 25 years.
When you purchase something so beautiful and rare, with one purpose: Slice up anything and anyone, yet you don't use it for that specific purpose. I understand though, that sword I'd never give up, I'd fear even slicing thin air, as I might drop it and do some damage, like phones
Great content... I was lucky enough to learn many things from a historian who had some amazing historical battle ready blades so i happen to know what they call battle ready now days... aren't
If you want more power and effectiveness to your cuts, pull the sword handle in towards your body while you are making the swing. This moves the sword lengthways while it's cutting and also makes it easier to stop the sword at the end of the swing.

By looking at the "Kami katana" you can damn near see why they stopped producing, it looked as if they ran out of such beautiful materials and time to make a such delicate blade, not to mention the tsuba, saya, and hilt look awesome.
D is really leveling up his persona as resident internet cool dude

Thanks for educating us on the difference between the two. I don't own a sword but the info is nice to know none the less.
“See how good they are at chopping shit up”😂
the thing i like about katana's over medieval longswords is the craftsmanship, they put their soul and blood into making them and they treat it like a living creature, an extension of ones body, but apart from that the longsword beats it in every other aspect
Well. At the very end, swords are mostly for showing your status then for a battlefield
This was my first foray on this channel, and the moment I saw that, I subscribed just for his level of intellect and charisma.
First time watching your vids. I have to say its refreshing to see someone doing this comparison that actually knows how to cut with them. Nice job man.

Him wearing that training outfit just feels like he came out from an anime
I actually saw some of the katanas used by the Imperial Japanese army in WWII on sale at one of the Gun and Knife shows at the WNC Agricultural Center. Upon lifting it, I felt that it was like lifting a weight bar at the gym. I think you would have to do bell crunch repetitions with 25-50lb weights for any one of your arms to eventually carry it as lightly and smoothly as a kitchen knife or letter opener.
A lot of WWII katanas were mass-produced junk. They really can't compare to high-quality traditional Japanese swords.

Single bevel swords can be sharpened with a semi-loose fine grit belt sander/grinder. The natural bowing of the belt aligns with the natural bevel if you know what you're doing.
Skallagrim did a vid on this a few years ago. Works really well. Over heating is an issue though.
This was a fun video. Good video quality. Well written script made it smooth. Not just you rambling on camera 👏🏾
To me swords and blades have been an art to the point of being near a spiritual affair, as I grew and learned different beliefs behind weapons and cultures, I’ve always felt that buying and being proud of a cheap sword speaks to how much you value your own assets and esteem.
I mean your right but not when you dont have a choice other than a 200 bucks one

I agree - penalizing it a point for being "too beautiful" really has no bearing on its cutting ability.
I love the rare drop reference lol. its a purple. while the 200 amazon sword is a common
Amazon would have to be green. Common would be the $40 ones at the weird guy with the stand at a flea market
I'm very surprised that the 200 did as well as it did. those rat tail tang wall hangers have been known to fall apart just doing Iai katas.
In this article it says the man used a decorative sword to attack the robbers (idk how decorative) but sharpened metal shouldn't be underestimated
You got real Japanese katanas being sold on eBay lol for $200 I don’t know why he bought the fake one I guess the door comparisons or he made a mistake and bought the fake one but you can buy real ones off of eBay for the same price or for five or $400
@@daviddicks35 You have no idea how much a real Japanese katana is worth. Those Ebay ones are all reproductions produced in Liaodong China.
@@daviddicks35for it to be considered a real katana in japan it needs to use tamahagane steel, be folded and differentially hardened, and has to be entirely made by hand. Not even the 2000 dollars katana in this video would be considered a real katana since there is probably machine assistance in its forging and probably not tamahagane steel.
But you said real Japanese katana and unless you are talking about a rusted deformed ww2 katana you can't get a real Japanese katana for 400 dollars.
@@daviddicks35 You are wrong, and confused.
Real japanese swords starts around thousands of dollars for a 18-19th century tanto knife, and there really isn't a ceiling.
that beautifull Paul Chen katana gave me goosebumps when you used it.
seeing you use a katana rlly brings peace to my mind.
Just keep practicing swinging your blade . No need for weights
I enjoy D’s vr game vids but I really think he should do more in-person videos like this.
You do realise that you have now become a katana review channel lol. You must buy all of them
I just ordered a Katana from HanBon Forge in China. It's closer to the $200 than $2000 but for my limited purposes I'll be happy to have one, and perhaps feel a little of the 'spirit of the Samurai'. Enjoyed your video, though not surprised the second sword which costs 10x more than the first, somehow also managed to perform better.

If you want more power and effectiveness to your cuts, pull the sword handle in towards your body while you
are making the swing. This moves the sword lengthways while it's cutting and also makes it easier to stop the sword at the end of the swing.
