She was definitely protecting you two. My Shepherd mix has done that a few times. It's my first Shepherd, and I love her. I probably will never have another breed, she is so sweet and loving along with the protection. Great dogs.
Without question, Lucy was protecting you! Show or working class, that is her ultimate job. I have owned only German Shepherds since 12 years old, 60 now. Nadya, my first long coat now 3years old is the same as sweet Lucy, We train and workout at 4am and 10pm. She can see and hear much better than me and will alert me and put herself between any perceived threat. I just retired 26 years law enforcement, and never had a better partner or house mate. Keep up your fun vids.

Our koda is very protective, he picked up from a young age that we don't like our neighbours (we've had police out after they threatened us). They definitely have a lot of instincts, well done Lucy x
Lucy was definitely protecting you both, not the burger. I have 3 GSD's, they are all friendly but have a good sense of character and know when I may be in a dangerous situation and will defend me. All of them are this way, it is just in the GSD DNA. Lucy would give her life for you. There is so much to love about this breed.

German Shepherds, I'm sure you know, all have that protective instinct that comes into play when you least expect it. They don't have to be formally trained as protection dogs. I've had two instances of that, one recently with my 1yr old Shepherd in July, and then with my GSD, Czarina at the vet clinic. Man walked in with an out of control Giant Schnauzer. Czarina laying at my feet until the Schnauzer started advancing. Suddenly, Czarina lets out a bark that reverberated off the vet clinic walls and goes into lunge mode. Basically saying, "you'll have to get through me to get to my person." The Schnauzer backed off. Shepherds are amazing dogs. Of all the breeds I've owned, there's nothing like them. Nothing.

Dogs are such amazing animals (especially Shepherds). Lucy probably sussed out the situation before even you did. She would have sensed a change in you guys and focused on the other guy as being a little different. It is a comforting thing to know they are always on the job.

My GSD Sarge is usually the sweetest boy. I never would've thought he would protect me. But, at 1 yr old he did. A strange man got to close to me and he sprang into guard mode real quick. He was not trained for this. German Shepherds are an AMAZING breed!!!

Your Lucy just went from puppy mode to protection mode. I know my female shepherd “Lupo” did the same thing. I lived with GSDs all my life. The only breed of dog I will ever trust.

Discovering your channel made me think back to my childhood German Shepherd who got killed because our neighbors dog jumped the 8 foot gate from a chair in they’re backyard and bit my German Shepherd named general’s legs, he had to get them amputated and in the end he didn’t make it due to loss of blood and infection. The neighbors dog, a Rottweiler, wasn’t punished, although he did have a few neck wounds but nothing major, the reason he didn’t have as many injuries is because he started biting generals legs first which made general kind of immobile and unable to fight back. That Rottweiler still lives their to this day even if we moved away.
Sorry for your loss
She was protecting mom and dad. My GSD did that one day. But the guy worked for the same company but it caught us by surprise. She didn’t lunge and him she just stood her ground and barked. That was the first time I saw her do that. But I know now that she has my back.

Hey mate awesome channel, following. Having a GSD in my apartment would honestly be a dream come true. How do you make it happen with work, does she go with you or stay alone? Or are you always home? Any tips? People seem very against having a breed like this in an apartment but surely if you give them 1.5-2 hrs exercise per day, that should work?

How do you teach Lucy to know when to be protective? (Sorry if my question is dumb)
North Sydney council area and Cammeray would be a very strong contender for most dog friendly suburb. Similarly, nearly every cafe, bar and restaurant has dog bowls, serves puppychinos, and is very dog conscious - and we have a lot of really good off lead areas. However - don't be surprised by a GSD being protective of their pack. I have a long stock coat German Shepherd called Hera, who accompanies me on our history tours and ghost tours ( www.sydneyghosttour.com/hera---the-ghost-guard-dog.html) . She similarly reacts when people approach with a seriously bad attitude - ( which is thankfully very rare!) . However what really surprises me, is that we have a local man who suffers from Schizophrenia. When he approaches and is on his medication, he is as nice as pie, and Hera , simply monitors him carefully, particularly when he transits our local off lead area. When his is off his medication, I suspect that Hera can smell this from his perspiration - and she goes into near werewolf mode when he approaches. As a result - this man now looks for her whenever he travels through this place, and if he sees her, promptly re-routes his walk to his destination via somewhere else. Given that he has been desperate and violent as a result of his illness before, requiring police to take him away for treatment, this is an enormous relief to the regulars who bring their dogs to this place. There is a reason that to this day, escape and evasion training for military personell caught behind enemy lines, stresses the need to avoid small children, and dogs. They notice instantly when your personal presentation, body language and emotional state are in any way incongruent, and point it out. With GSD's , if they perceive anxiety, frustration or anger as potential aggression signals - they switch into 'protect my pack' mode! As my girl is getting older, she seems to be getting more protective - which has been interesting to say the least!

6th sense. I had a great Dane do the same thing one time except is a was a salesman coming to the house. She never met a stranger in her life (meaning she was always friendly to everyone she's ever met) however, she did NOT like this particular salesman. Heavy barking/growling, and I followed her direction and told the guy he better leave. That was the only time she ever growled at someone in all her years.
