    My first trip outside Ghana 1976. I landed visa free in Copenhagen. I knew no one in abroad. Young 23 year old . The first people I started to look for were Ghanaians after checking into a hotel. The first Ghanaian I met was one Samuel Tetteh from Teshie a seaman from Spain to catch a ship. He had some injury and was discharged and was now shipless. I hope he is still alive. Oh how I wish I can see him again. My regret is we were busy solving our problems and did not take any pictures together! Nice guy. We shared a hotel room together to save money, although it is not allowed a Pension Hotel near Norrebrogade! So it is cool to hook up with Ghanaians when you travel!

    The way the youth are leaving Ghana is so so welcoming news. God bless their hustle. It is a wake up call for the government and the bad leaders we have. May the good lord bless the youth.

      They don't care o! They don't even believe in the country Ghana. How many of them have/had their children in GH public schools? It's just the business of political power (with what that entails) and emptying the national coffers they care about.

    • @peterk9620
      @peterk9620 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good point, the leaders don't care bcos their children are all studying abroad. Come to think of it , we spend our limited resources, even loans to train our nurses, teachers, doctors etc and at the end they leave leave for greener pastures in the Western world to help build their economies simply bcos our leaders don't value the skills of the people they've trained. Those who didn't spend a cent on their training are the ones benefiting. My prayer is that all the youth should travel and leave the country for the corrupt politicians. As for me, I've made up my mind. It's over.

      Don’t lose hope. The newcomers are lucky. I came here in early 70s. There were maybe less than 10 Ghanaians (my uncle, older brother & I were included) in Houston, Texas. Fast word there are close to thousand Ghanaians here in the metro area. The other Africans were during my time were Nigerians, probably less than 20. Now Houston has the largest Nigerian population in America. Funny, because of my accent & the butchering pronunciation of my last name I sat in front in class so that the rest of the students could not turn around to check me out.
      Soon u will get over this barrier. It’s funny during these years because of the small population of Africans in many cities, clueless Americans asked crazy questions about Africa. Their reference points were Tarzan movies. Some trout there were no cars & lived in trees. Animals roamed around.
      There are many of us now including our children & grandchildren.

    Maybe our educational system now has been diluted. I had the luxury of attending secondary school in the 60s. It was very competitive scholastically during my era. Fast forward, I began college in America in the early 70s. Trust me my 6th form education was equivalent to sophomore (2nd year) status here. Ghana has to change its educational structure with emphasis on technical (hands on) skills. Krakye teacher don’t compare America to Ghana. It’s miles apart. It’s not apples & hamburgers over here. There are so many social & psychological issues amongst the youth in America in spite of its affluence. Good luck & hopefully u will achieve the American dream.

    It's okay when the opportunity comes to travel but that's not the end of the struggles that come with life and living. Very important that as black people we learn to fix our problems in Africa instead running away from. If youth of today doesn't sacrifice to fix the problem then our progeny will also continue running. Fast forward 2 or 3 decades from now we may wanna come to retire in Africa and we wonder why we won't fit in the system. What's happening now is modern slavery and if our leaders don't wake up from their slumber our beautiful continent will become hell fire ( red bloodbathe everywhere)

      We are not there yet, mentally! We still think we just have to vote, and those we vote for will fix all our problems. How to get there mentally is the work-to-do at this point.
