2:44 - Yeah, that's because Apple has closed off the API needed for smooth scrolling. Every 3rd party mouse has to pick a fixed integer value and send it to the Mac telling it "that's how much I want things scrolled", while Apple's products have access to a completely different layer of communication that no other device has access to. While I do use a Mac, I absolutely think Apple should suck "things" for not allowing 3rd party accessories access to these HID APIs. I will never, ever buy a magic mouse simply in protest. While I love the idea behind it, the execution is terrible, especially as a software dev who needs to quick controls and would love to have at least one god damn button on the size of their mouse.
Interesting information... thanks for sharing. I've managed to use an app called Mac Mouse Fix to make scrolling on my SteelSeries mouse feel way better than it did to begin with, but you're right in that it still feels really odd and nothing close to scrolling on the Magic Mouse... or scrolling in Windows with the SteelSeries.
IMHO there are two issues with Magic Mouse: - The biggest one for me - no way to do both left and right click. Maybe if it let me do this then I'd even use it instead of other one (Zet Immortality Pro). But because of that core feature of the mouse missing I can't do that. - The form. I can live with it, but honestly if I could fix the first issue I'll better buy some accessory to make it not uncomfortable to use.
Ah I think what they mean is you can click both at same time. For example in a game you might hold right click to aim and then click left to shoot. Magic Mouse can’t do this.
Yes, exactly my experience. I got it from my girlfriend, and felt guilty not liking using it. So, I tried. But it is like you say: after even a few minutes it feels like torture. Thanks for your honest review!
Currently use a Keychron mouse for bluetooth AND wired connectivity (sorry Logitech 2.4 and bluetooth only isn't good enough), but I feel a high end Keychron or Logitech mouse is way better than the Magic Mouse that sit unused in my drawer, but I also have a Magic Trackpad sitting on my desk as well. I really like having a wired option.
@@Banproof I have a few M3 Mini's because they are ambidextrous and we have a lefty in my home. I think the Logitech MX Master is just slightly better in terms of hardware, but I really like having the wired USB option and it comes with a really nice USB C paracord that I wish I could but separately as it's a great desk usb cable. They will go on sale on Black Friday, I'm sure as I got mine on prime day, so feel free to pick some up!
Thanks for the reply. I've been really curious about the M6 as it seems to have most of the features of an MX Master, but costs half the price. Just wasn't sure if Keychron was any good for mice being that they're mostly known for keyboards. Your comment has reassured me it might be worth trying one!
I’ve used it daily for over a year now. Best mouse I’ve ever used. These mice choose their “host” apparently. I am sorry to all of those the mice did not find worthy. Another champion is always waiting out there somewhere.
@@Banproof It will. Luckily both have accepted me into their tribe. I find the trackpad far more forgiving of mere mortals. Also very comfy too. But the Magic Mouse wins for Final Cut and Logic. Having the ability to scroll horizontally along a timeline or across a music track is absolutely a game changer and makes the weird crab hands worth it lol.
The magic mouse was uncomfortable at first but I stuck with it and idk... it doesn't bother me at all 2 years in. Love it. Use it at work. Use the Magic Trackpad at home. Love that too lol
I've tried so hard to get used to it... and while it does improve for me a little bit over time... it's still super uncomfortable. I think the Magic Trackpad is the next thing I'll be giving Apple money for... 😂
Mapping mouse buttons to the keyboard shortcuts for changing desktops and Mission Control has seemed like the best solution for trying to get the features without having to use that mouse 😂
i got mine connected, but it won't show any of the options for gestures, and won't scroll at all. i've forgotten the device like 5 times now. running sonoma 14.7. ridiculous!
@@Littlebrownchicken nope. tried two units picked up directly from apple store and same error. Here's what I found with more internet research. Apple's website says the mouse is compatible with more than the latest OS, but the packaging on the mouse says only compatible with the latest OS. many others are running into the same problem as evidenced by a forum thread i found. apple is supposedly working on it, but I don't really care to wait.
The Magic Trackpad is a game-changer compared to a traditional mouse. I’ve been using it for my iMac for three years now, and I can’t even fathom going back to a mouse.
I have seen a lot of people use the Magic Trackpad and a mouse at the same time, maybe that would work for you. A lot of Mac users will recommend a Logitech MX Master.. don't do it. Most of these people are coming from the Magic Mouse and don't have experience with good mice. The Master 3 does have better tracking than the Magic Mouse, but not by much, it is still terrible if you are coming from a gaming mouse. I am all in on everything Apple, except that god forsaken Magic Mouse. I am currently using a Cooler Master gaming mouse which has a very simple look that doesn't go overboard with the gaming aesthetic. Turned the RGB off so it doesn't look as silly and gave me a lot more battery life.
I’m using a steel series mouse in a similar way at the moment, but even with apps to fix it the scrolling just still feels so janky. At the moment I am definitely tossing up between a MX Master 3s or a Magic Trackpad as my next purchase. I’ll probably end up trying both eventually.

The newer version 2024 usb-c is £53 new on amazon right now.
@Banproof decided not to get it based on your review. I saw dozens of reviews but your video is the only one that made sense unlike others.

you can set right click in system settings.

I used the Magic Mouse for years. No pain ever. Sorry that you have these problems. I love mine.
I guess you're one of the lucky ones. I so wish that was the case for me because I really do love almost everything else about the mouse.
@@Banproof I suppose you’re right. Happy to be one of the chosen ones 😂

There is options in the main mouse setting in MacOS for the gestures but I’m guessing you’ve tried that?
@@Banproof yep. i can't get any of the animated boxes above the settings to appear at all. it's like it's only half connected.
Weird, mine was used when I got it and just worked. Is it possible you’ve ended up with a faulty unit maybe? Especially if you can’t even scroll?!
Fake mouse maybe?

I don’t doubt it… but does your hand still work? 😂
