The existing I-66/VA 55 corrridor (between Gainesville and I-81) was called "Jim Crow Highway" and "Segregation Highway" during the early days of the civil rights movement because the local counties closed their schools rather than integrate - since then, VDOT has resisted any attempt to either extend Interstate 66 west OR allow West Virginia to extend either Corridor H or US 48 east to meet either Interstate 66 OR Interstate 81 (at the interchange between the two Interstate highways and VA 55) - despite Corridor H using WV 55 at the state line.
