Bret Hart said that he hated road agent George the Animal Steele, and that upon being a couple minutes late to a show at Hershey, Pennsylvania he was fined. In retaliation they stole Steele’s Halliburton brief case and his colostomy bag, and unloaded them crossing the bridge into New Jersey.
About payoffs: yes, it's cool to get a guarantee but working off the house makes guys wanna work harder, IMO. There's a company I tour with who works off the house on their big 30-day + tours and it's sobering for the guys that think they're the hot thing in the area and then don't draw. The look on their faces when they get their pay is always priceless. For those doing the whole tour, you end up making money in the long haul. For those doing only part of the tour, it's a gamble. Personally, I like working off the gate.

I think you're underestimating people a little when you wonder how many use the term "gorilla position" without knowing where it came from. This is personal experience, of course, but I only got into wrestling at most 4 years ago and soon after I started watching I already learned why it was called that from some source or other. Either it was a documentary on the network or a passing line on a podcast, I don't know, but if a very casual fan like me with no childhood ties to wrestling found out in short order, it's safe to say most people running televised wrestling programs know.

I really do appreciate Jim for whom he is and was. Don't get me wrong here. The current model I believe is the death of pro wrestling. There will be a resurgence of the golden age. Kayfabe will always have its place for the fans. The willing will always be there. The current directors of the "current" art be damned. The people with the older experience will be looked to. The bigger organizations are always scamming the ins and outs. I see this situation doing a complete 180⁰. Guerrilla Monsoon would be turning in his grave if he knew the bullshit going on today.
Why is wrestling destined to turn around into another golden age? There are fads and waves and declines in interest for all forms of sports and entertainment. Going out to see movies has declined even before Covid-19, football is more popular than baseball when it used to be the opposite, wrestling and boxing used to be the most popular sports now they’re not, and soccer never got that popular here despite the rest of the world. It’s perfectly possible or even likely for wrestling to stay niche forever.
I would just to say thank you. I really enjoy your work. I don't mean disrespect to today's fans but i just can't watch today's product. I have been watching from the late 60's but I just can't take the shows that are put on today. I will watch TH-cam videos and some podcasts. The show it self i find so bad and stupid that i feel stupid watching.
