I’m from 10 years in the future, this is an impressive quality video for being so long ago. Thanks for consistently putting out helpful and useful tutorials all these years!
I just bought a Mark iii yesterday and your video was unbelievable helpful. Your presentation was so clear, step by step. I can't wait to see what else you are doing. Thank you so much, I didn't know half of that stuff about video. I will contact you with questions when I start using my camera.
Many thanks for this tutorial. As a pro photographer feeling the need to get into shooting video as well, and owning both the Canon 5D Mark II and III, this video was exactly what I needed to get started.
That was the most useful video I have found to date. Thank You so much for taking the time to put this up. I just purchased the 5D Mark iii and need to get up and running fast. This helped a lot.
Thank you, Saj. I'm taking a video of a concert next Thursday and your video really helps. I keep learning more about my 5D Mark iii. I checked out a sound video as well. Don't have all the lenses for movement but will use a tripod. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you so much! This information is so helpful! I've had my camera for a year and a half and am just barely trying to figure the video out and this is the best video I have found so far.
I was searching one review about the two cameras, the MARK II and the MARK III, This video, far away, is the better, 4 real!` Thanks a lot!, you are a great Master!
Thanks for sharing this very informative video! I have owned a Mark2 since '09 and have been loving it since, although I was only focusing on photography back then. Now however, I'm in film school and seeing these video's where you explain the video functions and functionalities is just amazingly informative for me. So thank you and keep it up!
If only the mark III had the feature the 70D has which is automatic focus, it's amazing and focuses well with low f stops. It even has touch screen where you can simply touch what you want it to focus on and it's really good with keeping track of what you're focusing on😊
I agree with everyone here; very nice and informative video. I just got my hands on a 5D ii and am so looking forward to experiment with the video capabilities. Thanks again.
so simple and yet very informative, I hope you make more tutorial vid in the future. this was 8 years ago and I find it straightforward and without too much highfaluting words to sound professorial, like the other videos here in this platform, thanks I learn a lot... 2020.05.28 Thu., N.Y.
Fantastic video ! This video gave me in a nutshell evreything i needed to know to get strated with practical tips. Thank you for the video and those great tips.
Yea it is a huge difference if you have the IS on or off on the lens. Shooting with Prime lenses like the 50mm that has no IS creates a noticeable shake when handheld but I don't have that problem with the 24-105 IS.
i enjoyed this video, particularly as I use all the lenses you mentioned, have just upgraded from Mkii to the MKii never done Video previously but wondering about trying it out, and have found your video extremely helpful, thanks a lot
Thank you. I like to be pretty close to the subject. About 5 feet usually. The closer you are, the harder it is to focus if they move but it looks great. Also it depends on the shot size you are going for. With the 24-105 you have a lot of range.
The main reason for the upgrade would be the great audio options and the fixes to the video issues mark ii has. I would stick to mark ii if audio recording is not an issue for you.
Yes the motion blur comes into play in lower shutter. So when shooting at 30 frames at 30th shutter, you will notice a different look but it's acceptable to me in most cases. 60th shutter at 30 frames is the rule of thumb. I've just always gone along with it. That rule I learned in film 101 and seems to still be what do follow. But yes it does change the exposure so that's what I pay attention to the most.
A fairly comprehensive beginner's tutorial. One question that I need to ask... If you are on manual and have to select your shutter and aperture and ISO, don't you have to meter the scene? And if that is the case, wouldn't you then have to select your preferred aperture and then select the ISO to match your shutter/aperture settings? And what if you wanted to use auto-exposure? What adjustments/settings would be required? Everything else was pretty clear and straight forward. Thanks.
I shot video on the 5d Mk2 ffoer the first time the other night, it was in a nightclub and bar with pretty challenging lighting condition, I found it really hard to keep focus. What I found really frustrating was with the screen being so small, there are no guides to help you keep focus such as on the Black magic where there is a setting so you know that things are in focus. Just wondering if anyone can make any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. I realise that it's a great camera but maybe more where you can control your subjects and shooting conditions. Thanks a million.
It's important to use IS based lenses such as 24-105 F4 canon lens. Also premiere cs6 and cc have great stabilizing filters. A combination of the two create great hand held shots. If you can use tripod or monopod, that's always best.
Also if you can get into more specifics of depth of field on the Mark III, going into more detail on Exposure settings (Shutter / ISO and F Stop). I have the 24 - 105 kit lens. What I would like to see are how the the specific settings are made in the Mark iii Menu. .
Are you SURE there is no auto focus for video on the 5D III?? I have been shooting video with AF on the 5D III. You press the rear AF ON button, or shutter button halfway down. Focus mode is selected on 4th menu screen under AF mode.
3:49 I've seen this equation before before which I don't quite understand. On my 5D when using video the mirror stays up for the whole time the recording is being made. I can' hear any shutter movement, so I don't understand how shutter speed can be a setting for these cameras for video. What does it actually relate to? Is the shutter physically opening and shutting 60 times a second while the mirror stays up?
Hey Jonathan. 24 is 24 frames per second. and 30 is 30 frames per second. It's basically a different look and feel. 30 is more television and 24 is more cinematic and film like. I mostly shoot 24 frames so I almost always choose that. And it creates smaller files since less frames per second. All theatrical films are shot at 24.
very informative video both in content as well as presentation. Thank you for posting this and am looking forward to more from you. Is there any plan to do the audio video mentioned here? Thank you again.
we situated in Malaysia Kuala Lumpur, but currently we finding new location to set up the studio, after that we will set a event workshop teach by a mentor every month once, there will be new or juniors to learn further about photography, and i hope this will be a good idea, ^^
If audio is a concern, then Mark iii for sure. I would still recommend recording audio to a separate recorder. These cameras are really not designed for best quality professional audio recording.
Hey thanks for that. I didn't catch it. I just fixed the link to the website. Let me know what other topics you may be interested in as far as using DSLR for video. I'm in the process of making more videos.
Hey thanks for these great tips. If you are stuck with a Canon 24-70 2.8 which doesnt have IS. How would you recommend getting smooth shots for event video?
+skardar1 with lenses without IS at an event, I always try to use a monopod. you can still be flexible with it, but not have the vibration from hand holding.
You help so much - is there a way you could teach how to pull focus using the focus ring? I just bought one but have no idea how to use it. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much. A no-nonsense video like this is so much easier to follow and learn from than the gimmicky bullshit that are so many of the other videos.
I got a mk3 but its a case of all the gear no idea,Ive had some really nice sky/horizon shots and macro as well but would like to get off the all auto mode and learn the p/m etc modes and also delve a lot more into the manual mode. Can you advise any dvds (pal) that explains simply.Great video thanks for your help
It's more than clear Big big up to you .... How close in meter or in feet some should approach a subject while filming with a 50 mm or a 24 105 i mean t he closest you can approach the subject . Thank you
Yea for the most part. Setting up frame rate, shutter speed, F stop and white balance really never change from camera to camera. So even though this video is 4 years old, those things are relevant. I still have my Mark ii, but now mostly shoot on C300 or Sony FS7.
Should also mention that if you are shooting at a 120 shutter speed outdoors and a wide aperture, 2.8 e.g., then you are going to blow out your shot (overexposed), so you need to get an ND filter to limit the amount of light so you can shoot at such a wide aperture.
Great video. Thanks. I was trying my 5Diii and my 70D as my first attempt at video. I was shooting a close up demo of model making using the100mm L 2.8 macro. I found it easier on my 70D. PQ didn’t need to be great but I thought the 5D iii would produce a better result. Was I doing anything wrong? I get f stop and ISO and was shooting at 640/25 ipb ISO 800. Images were pretty good but lighting was not great shooting under tungsten lights.
Ok kool video but tell me something how to make sure my subject is always in focus? my problem is while shooting with the Mk 3 and 24-105 or 70-200 my focus is off and when i think my subject is in focus their not thanks.
Hello, I could not find your video on audio recording on the canon Mk 2 and 3 whilst recording video. could you let me have the link please. I have found your video so easy to understand and informative. thank you Satinder Sharma
I think Mark III is well worth the upgrade. The audio options you get for video make life a lot easier such as audio levels and headphone out. As far as video alone, you get some more options but not a huge difference. So if you are doing audio for video, 100% worth it.
Thank you for this excellent video! I just wanted to add, in my case, I have a mark II and for the audio I have external equipment (H4N + ME66-K6P). So normally, I shouldn't need a mark III ?
When i use led flashlight while recording, bright lines appear to my screen, they might go away, if i start recording again, while light is pointed other way.. why??
Very informative. I can't find the video on audio settings and would appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Thanks for sharing. David at The Resilience Development Company.
your videos are the best!!! I just bought a Canon 5D Mark 3. Learning a lot from you! thanks!! I have a 50 mm red circle Canon lens and a 24-105 red circle like in your video. I would love to get a great zoom lens for wildlife far off. Any suggestions. You said to make sure I get the IS setting built in right?? thanks so much!!
can you please make a night time street video using the Canon EOS 5D Mark III I would love to see how good and clean the iso is. Maybe get a subject to walk toward you using f/stop 2.8

Great introduction to start shooting video with a Canon Video!!!!.... Thanks Buddy!!!
Watching this in 2021 and recording with my 5dii, hands down still best video around. Many thanks, regards from Spain!
The most concise, accurate, and understandable Canon 5d Mk3 video instruction on TH-cam. Thanks!

Wow - fantastic overview. I'm starting to use both my 5D II and III for video - and you clued me into some great tips. Thanks a 1,000,000!
Probably the most concise video explaining settings ever! Thank you SO MUCH! Really this was great!

Really great tutorial on the basics of shooting video on these cameras. Thanks for posting
I am about to shoot a corporate video with my 5D Mark III and this video is exactly what I was looking for, thanks, very useful!

Awesome video!! I have not used my MkII in many years so this video was a perfect refresher course. Thank you 😀
Thank you so much for your perfect intro to video. This video should come with the camera, seriously.
Hey just saw your awesome message. Thanks so much. You motivated me to keep posting on here.
I agree with everyone here; very nice and informative video. I just got my hands on a 5D ii and am so looking forward to experiment with the video capabilities. Thanks again.
Brilliant thanks! Just picked up my 5d Mk2 after 6 years of inactivity and realised I'd forgotten everything!!
Excellent video. Very succinct and covers the points needed to get you started. Thank you.

Very helpful information. Step by step how to with the cameras I use.

A good place to start. Am learning to use my Mark III for video. This lesson was helpful. Thanks.

That was very precise and worth watching. If you could suggest some good ND filters for low f-stop settings.
Very nice tutorial. Thanks! You know your subject well and it shows.

that's what I was thinking!
He's talking about auto focus where you don't have to push any buttons. It's called Movie Servo AF, and it comes on the Mk IV or the 70d.
ah ok, cheers
Nice video. Thanks. The professionalism shows.
An honest and informative presentation!!! Good Man.

Love the 5d camera
You can get the 5d on sale now on www.1hds.com/canon5dmarkiiikit for anyone looking for it. With the lens kit too
I really enjoyed your video. I've had a mark iii for since 2014 and I still feel like I'm not using it to its full potential.

I'll try to make a video about focusing soon. It's mostly practice really. But I think I'll have some tips to help you.
Great video very informative and clear.

Do you have any tips for achieving focus for video. I have a problem focusing through the LCD monitor. I can't quite get a clear enough view.
Thanks.
Thank you for blessing us with this video sir.

I'm working on two new videos right now. One about audio and one about lighting.

Hello, I could not find your video on audio recording on the canon Mk 2 and 3 whilst recording video. could you let me have the link please. I have found your video so easy to understand and informative.

Wow! This is very helpful. Thanks!
Thanks so much. You answered so many of my queries. Just brilliant =)
Great video - very helpful! Thanks.
Thank you for a great video! So is there really no reason to spend more $ for the Mark III vs II for video only purposes?
I think Mark III is well worth the upgrade. The audio options you get for video make life a lot easier such as audio levels and headphone out. As far as video alone, you get some more options but not a huge difference. So if you are doing audio for video, 100% worth it.

Very informative. I can't find the video on audio settings and would appreciate you pointing me in the right direction. Thanks for sharing. David at The Resilience Development Company.
great info, thank you, what type of Mic would you recommend to cut out wind noise !,
your videos are the best!!! I just bought a Canon 5D Mark 3. Learning a lot from you! thanks!! I have a 50 mm red circle Canon lens and a 24-105 red circle like in your video. thanks so much!!
I also forgot to ask you about a great remote mic that fits on top of my Canon 5D Mark3 so I get the best audio. --thanks
I personally don't use a mic on the camera and try to use a external audio recorder, but I hear to RODE mic is good and they make one for DSLR.
Great video dude
can you please make a night time street video using the Canon EOS 5D
Mark III I would love to see how good and clean the iso is. Maybe get a
subject to walk toward you using f/stop 2.8
