While looking for your most recent video, this one popped up again and reminded me to offer a suggestion. When I want to center a face plate, I extend the crossing lines I use to find the center point. Then, I center the plate by making sure each of the lines appears centered in a screw hole of the faceplate. Driving a screw into those lines ensures a nearly perfect center.

Great idea! I did this a few years ago. But I did not use a face plate. I put the plywood on the lathe and made a recess so I could put the wood disc on the chuck. And I put velcro on the wood so I can easily exchange the sanding pads. You of course need different sanding pads with the cotton back to attach them to the velcro.

My first shop was the 8' x 5' back porch, and so I bought a Shopsmith! I had to take the window out to make cuts sometimes. Served me well for 30 years! I also made a disk sander for my lathe when I got rid of the Shopsmith 2 years ago. It works well for me. I make segmented turnings and flatten the rings for stacking with my sanding disk.

Hi Kent, Thanks for sharing this sanding station. I like the rubber clean up to remove the dust, definitely going to chase that up. I made one of these a few months back that was very similar, except I purchased the 12” sanding discs in multiple grits with a Velcro (hook & loop) backing and purchased loop side that had a adhesive backing that I fixed to my ply board. Now I can quick and easily change grits in seconds, works perfect.

Nice video.I'm a beginner and have three lathes, one for spindle turning, set up with cylinders attached with three grits for sanding when I'm not using it, one with a deeper swing for bowls and another newer lathe I use all the time. The spindle lathe with cylinders used for sanding is ok. The bowl one came with a table like attachment (like yours) for the banjo that I had no idea of it's use. Now I know. Making three of these tomorrow for the bowl lathe. Great idea.

That will be perfect for squaring up pen blanks or handle blanks before drilling them for tubes or thread inserts. I can just hang it on the wall behind my lathe and pull it down when needed. This is going to improve efficiency with my time because I can do all my prep work and turning without having to walk away from my lathe (because I like to do pen and handle turnings in batches). Now I just need to make that banjo mounted platform......
Thank you for the jig/tip. 😁👍

To make lineup of the ply and faceplate easier, you just need to extend your centre pencil marks out a bit because your face plate had holes that were at 90 d to each other. That way you just needed to ensure the pencil line appeared in the middle of your screw hole.

I have been looking into ways to reorganize my shop. I have a sanding station that's Box about 5 ft cube with a 12-inch sanding disc. This, needless to say, takes up a lot of room. I will be looking into making this attachment to eliminate this oversized tool. Thank you.
Thanks also to Anders Odman for the idea of gluing some wood to fit a chuck. This will save the cost of several face plates.

I have a fairly complete wood working shop in my garage and I will just tape a piece of sandpaper down to one of the wings on my table saw and then place the foot of the bowl down upon the grit and with light pressure gently rotate the bowl about a 1/4 turn back and forth to flatten the foot.

Here are a couple of suggestions for your new "almost free" sander:
    1. If you use MDF if will be flatter than plywood and will not have voids as is common with many plywoods.
2, Two inch face plates are cheap so I suggest you buy several and make a sanding disc for every grit you may want.
    3. If you don't want to buy face plates you can make them from hardwoods if you have a tap the same size as the drive on your lathe.
I have several of these sanding discs and use them often as they are very convenient.

Super idea. Love the platform idea. Simple. I am happy the face of plywood was flat. I always have to face the plywood to make jamb plate or sanding disc. I purchased a tap for my lathe so I could make a maple block and put threads in it to mount in my lathe. Then glue the block to plywood and turn it round/flat. where do you get the sanding disks? Online or local? Thanks for sharing.

I shall probably make multiple discs. I shall use hook and loop as I have some 8" disc's already. I am going to adapt your idea and use a 3 - 4 inch disc on the back of the main 8" so that i can just pop them into the scroll chuck.
I had thought of mounting a screwdriver quick change mandrel into a block in the scroll chuck so that I could use the 2" sanding heads I made for my power drill. That was my initial attempts before a made my own hook and loop friction sander.

I think a way to upgrade this if you intend to use many discs and don't have that many faceplates would be to glue a smaller circle of plywood on the center of the larger piece, mount it between centers and turn a tenon for mounting in a chuck.

Bruce, I'm a righty but I'd struggle if I hadn't taught myself to use either hand. I think if you're patient with yourself, you'll find it helpful. Also, I have found that in teaching myself to do something with my left, I often improve my skill on my right because it forces me to be more aware of what I'm doing. I've done this for decades and it is really helpful. Try stirring a drink or brushing your teeth with your right. We can do it, it's just awkward at first.

while you're at it, just buy 2 or 3 bolts to go with it and you can cut them down to 1 to 2 inches, drill two holes in the center and use them to thread up onto the wall like his wall mounts were.

Wonderful, fantastic and very useful sanding attachment. Thanks Kent. I have one question: During turning, the lathe is turned on and off to check. Would this frequent on and off damage the motor? I have Rikon Midi lathe (70-220VSR 6 months old). Thanks for all your wonderful videos, they are my excellent source of learning.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hm? It should not damage the motor. We must stop and start the lathe often. Sometimes you see "production" turners rarely stop the lathe. That's fine for them, but not practical for most people. Happy Turning!

Many years ago (30 or more) when I was making furniture I had purchased a 10" metal sanding disc that mounted on my table saw and was used to "plane" board edges for glue ups prior to my being able to afford a jointer. Don't know if they are around any longer but could be useful for something like this as it was very stable like the backing plate of the disc sander

Yes the velcro hook and loop idea for attaching the sanding sheet means you only need one disc. Another way to make this even cheaper is to epoxy nuts into the plywood disc that match the thread on your headstock. Mine is M33 3.5 and i got a box of 6 for A$15 and so made up some screw on glue blocks as well. My work rest is made from 25mm threaded water pipe (fits into my banjo) with a standard pipe flange screwed on the end to hold the plywood base. So no fabrication required.. I have an extra disc made from two pieces of plywood with a 3mm disc of aluminium sandwhiched between them. This stops the disc flexing.

Great video Kent! I plan to buy a 6' pine 1x12, cut it down to 6 squares. Round them out with the band saw and then mount using a faceplate. True them up and turn a tenon on one side for my 4 jaw chuck. Then I'll have 6 for different grits and won't need use up or buy another faceplate. Wish I had a source for the banjo platform. Does your father take requests? =)

Built a similar sanding disc for my Delta midi some years ago. Didn't think of the banjo platform but it was easy enough to make a platform that fit into the bed way gap and clamped down like a banjo. Done a lot of sanding for various projects with this over the years. What I like best about it is the variable speed. I used 5/8" melamine for mine. When the disc wears out a heat gun takes the old one off and the leftover glue scrapes off easily to leave a clean and flat surface for the new disc.

Instead of fabricating the metal plate on the bottom of the platform just go to the plumbing section of your local hardware store and buy a 25mm pipe flange and matching pipe nipple to screw into it, less than $10 for both. My pipe nipple was a little too thick for my tool test fitting so I cut a couple of inches off it and turned a hardwood dowel to the size that fitted into both the sawn off nipple and the tool rest holder. So easy 👍🏻😊🇦🇺

I made essentially the same jig, except that I have a velcro type of permanent back glued to the plywood and I can change the grit from coarse to fine whenever I need. Just make sure to use at least a 3/4 inch or even 1 inch plywood to get a very flat surface. Half inch plywood won't do the job.

In another video, you point out that the center of the bowl is turning slowly while the edge is flying. The same thing happens when sanding. Your board needs the be below or above center with the middle of the board at the middle left/right. Balance up/down and left/right as best you can. Think about it. The other item is when you flattened the foot off the bowl. Hold the bowl in your left hand with the thumb inside the rim. Now square the bowl with the disk but not touching. The center of the bowl needs to be at the center of the disk. Use the tip of you right index finger to lightly press the foot into the center of the sanding disk. All sanding is circular. All in balance. Removal on the foot is balanced. No flying pieces. -I am learning a lot from you. Thank you.

Garry not Linda. Before you buy anything read the comments below there are some really great ideas. Larry Mitchell's is the cheapest and fastest of all. Turn a block, cut a tenon to fit the chuck, screw the block to the plywood. Couldn't be simpler. Another guy said buy a nut that fits the headstock, turn a hardwood block, drill a hole and press in the nut and epoxy in place, screw to the plywood. You don't really need a threaded piece to mount the disc to the wall. Turn a dowel to fit inside the arbor hole of the faceplate or adapter nearly all the way through. Mount that to the wall with a single screw through the center like the piece shown. I've stored my Shopsmith discs that way for years.

The biggest problem I found with doing this was that the wood can give too much when pressed against. I made one of these for my lathe but I used a 1/4 inch thick and 12 inch round steel plate. Solid rigid and then made a flat surface with a post to fit in my tool rest position. Works great.
