@@nattybumppo4151That is how shadows work, in fact. It’s just that most light sources on earth come from small sources that are smaller than the object that the shadow is from, so their shadows seem to get wider at a further distance rather than smaller. As for shadows from sunlight, they usually appear to stay the same size because of how far away the sun is. However, in the case of an eclipse, the relative distances between the earth, sun, and moon, and the fact that the sun is bigger than the moon, cause a cone-shaped shadow to be projected onto the earth, and the spot where the shadow touches the earth surface is far smaller than the moon - only a few miles across.
Man I wish more people got that excited about something. I got joy just hearing how happy he was. This was truly amazing. And my new favorite phrase of all time is "omg, PROMINENCE"
You provided one of the few comments in support of the gentleman filming the event. 99.8% of the comments just show how shallow a mind with computer/cell phone and a data plan can be. It's called PASSION....the gentleman was PASSIONATE about the rare event he was witnessing. A total solar eclipse is a MONUMENTAL phenomemon. Most of these idiots are clueless to the perfect mechanics, geometry and timing that must come together to produce such an event. And to view it - from a commercial jetliner - is a truly awe-inspiring experience to which the gentleman was reacting. The fact that he was reciting the correct terms ("prominence", "diamond ring", "Baily's Beads") throughout the recording showed this is something he had more than a passing acquaintance with. Then again, some people get that excited about Game of Thrones or some similar mindlessness.
While he may be well versed in eclipses, to me it just sounds like he is just trying to show off his knowledge to other passengers. These events should be admired and observed in silence in my opinion. Real physicists are humbled by these natural phenomenons. They understand just how irrelevant the human race is in the universe.
not really. i would put all my concentration into engraving that moment into my soul (and a camera probably) rather that blither like an idiot. i've seen three eclipses so far and one of them was a totality so perfect to be seen only once a century ( 2009). yet i definitely did not act like i was having an orgasm while being high on LSD.
The way hes explaining it makes you get excited too. He can be a great solar eclipse tour guide. You can tell he knows a lot about it.. totality, 7 oclock, 10 o'clock, prominence, elongating, diamond ring.
I thought the same thing. Would totally ruin my experience unless I had headphones. 2017 will have one across the whole USA and I intend to view in the middle of a field far from as many people as possible, for this very reason.
Prominences! Diamond ring! Oh my gawd! Look at that! Here it comes! Look at those prominences! Totality! On a brighter note, it really was a beautiful view. Thanks for uploading this video!
+Kane Alson A lot of people don't know that the plane was full of astronomers from the American Astronomical Society. Astronomer Mike Mentrianakis was the guy freaking out. He isn't just some obnoxious passenger shouting. He was saying what they all understood and appreciated. They were most likely making similar observations and remarks from their own windows. Mike lives for this. Totality! Totality!!!.....
This guy is really endearing. Made me smile to hear his excitement. Cut him a break, this was a rare and unique experience that he obviously appreciated greatly. Good for him.
When I first saw this video, I thought the guy's reaction was overblown and a bit silly & ridiculous. After witnessing the August 2017 total solar eclipse from Missouri, I can totally understand & relate to what he's feeling. There's no words to describe the power of totality over our mere human emotions!
It's pretty sad how people complain about everything. Hearing someone excited about a unique experience about the amazing world we live in is a beautiful thing. This video is one of the best things out there in recent days. Cheers to everyone who is constantly in awe of the beauty of nature and of the opportunity we have to share this with each other.
I watched this video yesterday and I thought it was exaggerated. I watched the eclipse today and this is exactly how I behaved. These total eclipses are even better in person, and much bigger!
Before you comment on the guy who's capturing the video... Think about how patient he's been his entire life waiting to see something like this. Most people don't! My gawd, prominence!

Kudos to this guy and his passion for this event. Him and others, part of the American Astronomical Society, got Alaska Airlines to change this flight schedule so that they could witness this event. You all are complaining about his excitement. . . but this is part of his life. You'd be just as excited for this, too! Thanks for the awesome video :)
You have to see it live to fully understand and appreciate the experience. Saw my first total eclipse this last 4/8 in Avon Lake OH. An unforgettable experience of a life time
Every person complaining about his commentary has never seen a total eclipse. The spectacle is so far beyond normal experience that it's next to impossible to vocalize what is actually happening. There are unfortunately no words to describe it, nor is there a good way to capture it with photography. It's similar to the difference between watching a video of skydiving and actually participating. Nothing accurately reflects the experience.

This is my first Total solar eclipse. And seeing it in Texas from my own eyes is breathtaking. It’s so much better seeing on your eyes than using any expensive camera.
This is the new "double rainbow" video!!! You can't be annoyed at the videographer's commentary. You gotta love it! The images and the whole flight. Good job Alaska airlines!
Having just seen a total solar eclipse in person, I can completely understand the sense of euphoria that this man feels. I got to see the eclipse from Dublin, Ohio and to see the diamond ring, corona, and solar prominences is truly indescribable. As I watched with my family, I was also doing play by play and cheering as if my favorite player had just hit a home run in the World Series.
Having once been under the shadow of the moon during the 11 Aug 1999 total solar eclipse in Europe, I can fully understand his excitement. There's something distinctly primordial about the sun suddenly disappearing. I had exactly the same reaction and burst into tears on my recording of that day. Now I'm looking forward to being in Oregon in Aug 2017
That is actually extremely INCREDIBLE. The odds of someone getting a flight and literally front row seats to this, on the day it finally happens after many many years, is such a rarity and probably once in a lifetime thing and these people are getting to experience it. I’m just in aww of that, it’s so amazing to me!
The fact that we have our technology today to document these events is pretty outstanding. I can’t imagine how earlier civilizations reacted to this!! Just amazing!!

Yeah friend this man is killing everyone off by laughter and anger. Really this is gonna be a nice joke with this guy. If I saw this guy today, bet I would really kill myself on laughter!
Amazing! I'll be climbing a mountain today to watch the solar eclipse 8/21/2017 at about 63% coverage. It's not total, but it's going to be awesome! This guy is really passionate and I had no problem going on that "trip" of awesome with him. It's sad that other people have never felt this extreme feeling of JOY. Some may be completely void of emotions all together or they were brought up to stifle them. I would much rather be born with no limbs than be void of emotions. When those of us who are super-sensitive experience intense emotions it seems to leave a negative on so many because they just can't FEEL what we feel. I experience intense joy in many things people deem as not worth feeling so much for. And they wonder why they need so much money and junk to try and attain a temporary replacement for things that are elusive to them ... JOY being one of them. I'm not an astronomer and I'm not passionate about celestial events, but I have empathy and can live joy through him as if it happened to me. I'm addicted to the feeling in the center of my core. Once you find it, you'll never let it go. But the material world you need to let go of is too high a price for most.
That was only 3 minutes, imagine an 8 hour flight with this guy! "OMG, the flight took off! OMG it's beautiful! OMG the food is here! Wow! TOTALITY! OMG! their giving peanuts! OMG! It's been 15 minutes! OMG! wow! "
Incredible footage! Well done! I've only seen a partial a few years back, but it was very memorable. But seeing a total solar eclipse? .... in-flight? ... it must be absolutely phenomenal! And I'm sure the video doesn't compare to seeing it in person. Very cool story too, enjoyed reading about it on the Alaska Airlines blog.
Now that is a view you would rarely ever get from that altitude!!! Pilots were probably excited over this one! Beautiful! Edit: I witness the eclipse of 2024 in Dallas & I had the SAME reaction! 😂

"Would you look at that?" "Just look at that!" - Ed Bassmaster
OMG! wow! "
I've seen it once, from the surface, and I will never see it in my life again… Incredible!
TOTALITY! PROMININCES! TOTALITY! ELONGATED! PROMINANCES! OH MY GOD!
Bigblue091 😂
The commentator kept this moment from reaching its full potential
Before April 8th i laughed at the commentary, after witnessing totality. All i can say is …….. i get it
Is this the Double Rainbow Guy again?
This video started playing loudly on my phone, and my family called out from the next room, & asked me to turn the porno down I was watching!!👀
HHAHHAHAHA
Protip: mute the video. the annoying guy shouting is annoyingly annoying.
+Haukenslush Human tip: find something better to say after watching such an incredible video
+Stephen W. Ramsden OH MY GAWD... OH MY GAAAWD -- DIAMOND RING! OH MY GAAWD
+Haukenslush Thought exactly the same thing. I fucking hate people who talk non stop.
+Stephen W. Ramsden No ma'am I will NOT find something better to say.
The horizon ring is so cool
"Full double rainbow ! What does it mean....what does it mean...."
@@juginstin pssst....TH-cam "Double Rainbow" 😂
lol thats one passionate astornomer. :P
Good for him though. That must've been pretty awesome in person.
Sounds like an episode of Rick and Morty
Now that is a view you would rarely ever get from that altitude!!! Pilots were probably excited over this one! Beautiful!
Edit: I witness the eclipse of 2024 in Dallas & I had the SAME reaction! 😂
jokes aside
that's actually an extremely beautiful event
when they also find out that the sun and moon moves inside our Firmament, it will be a much greater WOW and eye opener for them
👍🏾💯👍🏾💯
Amen
Bro shut the fuck up. Nothing works in the flat earth "model".
@@vegardpig8634 false. God alone created, designed, authored, and wrote the King James Bible alone. It is impossible that man wrote that book. God words teaches creation where man teaches evolution. The undeniable evidence is within God's words. Seeing is believing for the unbelieving.
