This is the dumbest comment ever. This has been going on in Vancouver's downtown east side since Brian Mulroney was prime minister. It didn't get any better when Harper was in power.
It's almost as if people who have no understanding of how the political system works are susceptible to populist rhetoric.

Dumbest comment ever. I grew up in Vancouver and it's been like this in the downtown east side since Brian Mulroney was prime minister-- spoiler alert, it has nothing to do with who is prime minister, or what political party they represent.

I live in Honolulu and for generations there's been basically an open air drug market in Chinatown about a block from the police station. I came out of walmart once and there was like 8 people smoking black tar heroin right in front of the store. They were nice enough though, at least tar heroin doesn't make them stand around folded in half.

pharmaceutical companies and doctors and the government allowing them to turn doctors into drug dealers are responsible for at-least 50%. Look up the OxyContin epidemic. Dr. Used to get payed royalties for every bottle prescribed. They where prescribing highly addictive drugs for minor injury’s and telling people they where non addictive. When the government made them cut everyone off they went to harder drugs on the street cause you can’t just cut somebody off of drugs like that once there hooked. Lots of peoples life’s fell apart right in front of there eyes cause a doctor prescribed them a highly addictive drug as non addictive for some extra money.

Most of the people there were suffering from drugs and other problems.

why wouldn't someone move to Vancouver area? I'm a man, who's career has no competition in Vancouver. I was able to quit 6 different companies in 2 years until i found the right fit and best monetary rewards... simply because Van is a "white collar" city and your engineers aren't so smart..I can also ski Whistler whenever I wish! Sometimes I even get an opportunity to observe what happens to building (off of Pender and Cambie) given to junkies and prostitutes and criminals with the nice view of North Van from their apartment ..not pretty fyi....but it makes sense why they're not in mental institutions once you notice directors, managers and advisors of homeless shelters and foundations wear designer bags and designer clothing to "work" to sum it up @@allan.johnson. ......Vancouver is "expensive" and boring for those who move or stay here for the climate! AND they really stay because of asbestos in their $2500 apartment whilst drinking lead in water from outdated infrastructure...BTW Vancouver is not expensive, Vancouver is overpriced for what it is......Canmore is expensive, French riviera is expensive, Mallorca is expensive...hope that helps

I have been living in Vancouver since 12 years. I was so shocked when I first saw that, and I want to blame the government for neglecting it to this day. It is questionable what the government is doing. Anyone who sees it like that is dangerous and disgusting. It's so sad that I can't believe why everyone is silent about degrading the value of beautiful Vancouver.

It’s time to acknowledge that you can provide every single thing someone needs including the needles to do it…….the question should be are they wanting help or are they wanting to live a life we might not agree with…….feel is right. We always should offer a hand up. But when that hand is pushed away we can’t force help. Mental illness plays a huge role but when they refuse their meds they choose the illness. Just like any illness. Consequences come with that choice. In BC we have gone too far. Way too far. Addiction is a disease but it also treatable. The core thing is that the person wants to receive treatment. Even if it’s attempted multiple times without success they are trying. We as a society are set up that one works…..gets paid…….pays taxes…..pays rent…..pays for food……pays for utilities. The current system pays them $1300 a month. That’s not much. The thing is most don’t want to have to pay for an apartment. Don’t want to be responsible to pay their bills. It’s expected that it be given. That they don’t have to work. What this is is a mental illness that is antisocial of society. That there are rules to live in a society. If you want something. You work for it. That no one owes you anything. But if we look at it like what it is……mentally challenged meaning they can’t make decisions for themselves that provide self safety……self care in every way they are simply mentally challenged. What do you do with someone that is mentally challenged? That can’t look after themselves? A group home. There are rules and they abide by them. They are given nothing except a roof over their head……meals and someone to oversee their care. Just like a child they have a curfew that they are required to be “home”. They required to do chores to get $ to get extras. But just like a child they are not permitted to drink alcohol or do drugs. No exceptions. Why? Because children don’t have the ability to make choices about controlled substances and either do these folks that are mentally challenged. Strong guidance mixed with an expectation of adhering to the abc’s of living in a group home can mean these folks have help. We just aren’t going to assist them with the addiction……catering to a belief that they are making wise choices when they have proven they can’t.
