      My 2nd concert ever in Huntsville, Alabama about 1976 ? Tull was generous with encores and giving us way more show than our tickets cost. That night they were coming back for their 4th encore and the Von Braun Civic Center, newly built, turned the power off to the stage. Ian Anderson was livid. Beyond livid. He said they'd never return to our GD town. They never did. Who could blame them ? Saw them in Nashville later. Nobody shuts the music off in Nashville.

      Mike, did you just suggest that Tull has had the same sound for 40 years!? In ‘68 they did primarily Jazz-rock, after that they moved to a blues-rock until about ‘71 when they move again toward hard rock. Starting with Aqualung they took a folk-prog turn as well, but you could argue they had art rock influences from ‘72-74. With Warchild they merged their Jazz and Blues sound along with their prog sound but with Minstrel in the Gallery they rolled toward English folk which they concentrated on for the latter half of the ‘70s. IN the early ‘80s Tull moves toward a combination of synth infused rock, and even tried synth infused English folk rock. You could also look at Roots to Branches for yet another sound change where they merge in South Asian and Middle Eastern sounds into their rock repertoire.
      Now honestly, I can hardly think of a single band that has changed their sound MORE than Tull Mike.

    Martin Barre is one of the best and most underappreciated guitarists in rock. While he has a certain style, he plays so many varying styles within the songs that he is truly a master. Ian Anderson played flute, guitar, tambourine, lead singer and probably 4-5 other instruments. This was a very talented Progressive Rock band.

  • @anitapaulus937

  • @gileshabibula7006
    @gileshabibula7006 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Cross Eyed Mary is another great song by Tull.
    Ian Anderson does some strange things with the flute on some of their other songs, he hums while playing the flute and it sounds like nothing else you've ever heard, a bit like distortion on an electric guitar. Try humming and whistling at the same time, it's a similar sound.
    The original Jethro Tull the band got their name from was an 18th century British agricultural pioneer.

      @davegrenier1160 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Absolutely. This version is high-energy, but the studio version is more complete musically. Also get the lyrics and read them. The song is very interesting. It's about life, and how it's impossible to make it slow down, it just keeps coming at you no matter what.
      Old Charlie stole the handle
      And the train it won't slow down
      There's no way to slow down
      "Skating Away," is also about life, and the dangers and instabilities it can present at any time:
      Skating away, skating away
      On the thin ice of a new da-a-ay
      I have a custom made decal of this on my road bike (on the forks), along with a lyric from Pink Floyd (on the seat stays):
      Shorter of breath
      And one day closer to death

    Yeah, Ian Anderson, another legendary musician, singer, songwriter, plays piano, guitar and obviously flute. try some of his other bands like 'Yes', truly magical Saw him live at Fairfield Halls Croydon in the '70's as the supporting act to Cat Stevens. Much overlooked band, full of very talented musicians. I'm afraid the Justin Beiber brigade doesn't come anywhere near. Talented cream will always rise to the top.

      Speaking of "talented Cream"... Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker OMG great band. Those were the days. Amazing music back then.

    This was my first concert . I was 11. After this full energized and talent full show. I said to myself , I am going to live shows for as long as I live i have done just that. My last concert was at lokabazooka. A Boston based concert it was with slipknot and seven dust, amongst as many other a amazing talent.

    The Allman Brothers Live at the Filmore East. You don’t Love Me. That’s some live rock and roll right there

    This was a live version from the '82 tour. So 11 years after the actual release of Loco Breath.
    I suggest you to listen other classics like Cross Eyed Mary or Aqualung to begin. Usually I would suggest to listen studio versions before but JT live were beast in those days.
    The instrumental at the ending for example is another Tull song called Black Sunday from the album "A" that they used as the ending for those shows.

    Passion Play and Thick as a Brick are my two favorite albums. They were successive albums, both concept albums, with movements rather than songs. At their peak. Songs from the Wood and Roots to Branches # 3 and #4.

    Jethro Tull, a huge band back in the 70's and possibly even bigger in the States than their homeland,England,where they were massive.A Tull show was an event with grumpy Ian Anderson leading the way.
    Unique band.

    Wellllllllll........you have wandered off into the deep end now! Talk about large catalogs! I'm partial to the older stuff, the "This Was" "Stand Up" "Benefit" "Aqualung" "Thick As A Brick" "Living in the Past" "Passion Play" era was my favorite, although I enjoy it all. What a friggin' concert they put on too! I drove over 2 hours one way to see the "Aqualung" tour in 72, got back home at about 3am and took my ACT college entrance exam the next morning at 8! Didn't regret it a bit! For singles, I might suggest "Aqualung" and "Cross Eyed Mary" together next, since they are related. Then maybe a nice, live "Thick as a Brick" from Madison Square Garden. You have SO much to look forward to!

    Awesome song. Locomotive breath was ALWAYS a favorite of mine. Love the flute!!! This is live and many years after the original recording. If you can, listen to the recording off the Aqualung album. You won’t regret it.

    The band's name is Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson is the man singing and playing the flute. Aqualung is one of the best albums ever!
