Having just published two books about the Santee River, and the early rice plantations from 1793 to 1866. Planning a trip there this spring as the area is filled with history.
Gold rice is a thing of beauty. Those told to harvest it should have been properly paid as correct compensation. They should have been free and paid to work in this great and profitable feeding and profit.
I was visiting a plantation in South Carolina when I learned of this great and unique aspect of plantations.I can only lament that it wasn't accomplished by freed men and proper compensation to them and their nuclear families.
Precisely. Those folks had their labor stolen for centuries and just like anybody else who creates wealth, they deserve to have their inheritance passed to their descendants.
