In re-watching this video after getting a Syntakt I noticed something that was missed. The Syntakt has two slope modes for portamento - Constant Rate and Constant Time. The default is Rate however the 303 uses a Constant Time setting. This can be changed in the Sound menu by going into the Portamento submenu. Other than that, stellar video!

    veryvery nice vid!
some hints (did not read through the comments, so sorry if I'm doubling)
    KBD:
the cutoff is not keyboard tracked in a 303.
    resonance:
resonance controls multiple parameters: it affects the cutoff, and the accent envelopes attack time apart of the obvious.
    accented notes:
    - decay time is fixed: it's the same as on the lowest decay time of the 303
    - accent is additional envelope that adds up to the decaying envelope: it's attack time is a function of the resonance (no resonance means no attack, max. resonance means max. attack)
    waveform:
    - the square is not a perfect square, it has some pw offset
    filter:
    - it's a 24dB/Oct OTA filter design. it's referred to as 18dB/oct mostly because of one of it's poles is detunes by an octave
    - the filter is non-linear, which adds a lot to it's character (especially on the square wave)

FWIW, the Setup page offers a Velocity Modulation page, where you can have velocity increase the filter env depth (and also filter decay). I find that by having velocity modulation you can reduce some of the need for manual plocks on things like Filter Env Depth. YMMV

Nice work! The original 303 VFC did not have key tracking on the VCF (as far as I can remember). The MC 202 did have "KYBD". The 303 VCF's slope was approximately 24 dB/octave but I've read that it "behaved" like a 3 pole filter much of the time. It also had pretty significant nonlinear feedback in the ladder network due to the diodes, something which is super hard to emulate "correctly" numerically, using soft synth tech. You could really make that ladder whistle like crazy! Then again, no 303 sounded exactly like another.

On that synth if you want it to sound like a 303, only use 1 oscillator (no sub osc, no unison). The filter won’t sound so acidy at high resonance because it’s a Moog-style filter not a 80s Roland-style filter.

Although more complicated, the Syntakt sounds just as good, and has more to offer than a 303. Elektron should create a 303 mode, but add some bells and whistles to the options. Considering the amount of tracks on the Syntakt, you could technically create multiple 303's, and have them play off each other. I just recently got the Syntakt, so I have yet to wrap my head around it. It's my first Elektron box. After experiencing how nice the Elektron boxes are, I've ordered the Octatrack MK2 and the Analog Rytm MK2. I'm thinking about getting the rest of them as well. I'm just not sure if I need them. I already own a bunch of other gear. I only had the Korg Analog Kick with the MS 20 filter, and the Syntakt for drum machines, so the Rytm made sense. I already owned a MPC Live 2, Maschine Plus, Deluge, and Organelle M, but the Octatrack offers options that they don't have, so it also made sense to get the OT. I own the OB-X8, Sub 37, Grandmother, Iridium Keys, Hydrasynth 49, Opsix, GR-1 Minilogue XD, Behringer Model D, and a pretty nice pedal collection, plus other gear, so I'm not sure if the other boxes make sense. I have a Hapax, Beatstep Pro, and SQ-64, so I have sequencer options. My software collection is filled to the brim as well. It makes me feel indecisive about getting the A4, and Digi's. I think it would be cool to have 2 A4's, to have 8 voices, with the Elektron sequencer on my desktop, but I could take that money and put it towards a Prophet 10, which is on my wanted list.

Just rewatched this vid. The best explanation of how to do acid on the Syntakt out there. I have one question. Regarding distortion. Did you use the distortion on the FX track to add extra distortion or just the overdrive on the synth page? Just curious. When I add the distortion from the FX track it sounds really close to the distortion pedal that you used.

    • @CaptainPikant

Hi Tsumios, try experimenting with different shutter speeds in your camera. Between 1/50 and 1/60 there might already be a lot of difference in perceived flickering. If everything fails, you can also deflicker the screen via software in post.
