Wow! This gets more intriguing as you delve into these times. Why was De Vere so close to Norfolk (was De Vere a (secret) Catholic? (but surely Burleigh wouldn' let him marry his daughter?..but then again, he'd have an Earl as a son- in-law and E1 may have wanted it for some reason of her own). Was Norfolk a mentor? Would the fact he (De Vere) was a Courtier matter so much, when such talent was recognised? ..or maybe it wasn't by the powers that be? Was De Vere 'cancelled' because of the questions about his heir? (surely can't have been that scandalous). Fascinating! How can a grammer school lad afford (in those times) to travel to Italy? Well done AW and all! A timeline of the known events in his life (corresponding with what was happening with E1, Court events/influentional characters (Norfolk, Burleigh, Leicester) may be useful?
Alexander says Harry's remarks are fascinating and truthful after Harry says -- bombastically -- that knowing who wrote the words he says on stage doesn't inform how he acts.
On the devere society website for years. "1589 - The Arte of English Poesie, possibly by George Puttenham but published anonymously, rolls through the presses. In this influential work of literary criticism Edward de Vere is singled out for special praise: ‘And in her Majesties time that now is are sprong up an other crew of Courtly makers Noble men and Gentlemen of her Majesties owne servantes, who have written excellently well as it would appeare if their doings could be found out and made publicke with the rest, of which number is first that noble Gentleman Edward Earle of Oxford.’ The devere society is beneath contempt.
What a marvellous talk and what an outstanding and distinguished panel! Except: Howard Gayton? Is he an "expert" on this panel? Who on earth is he? And who on earth had the grand idea to bring him on board? He stands out like a sore thumb.
Watch the presentation for the entire Zoom meeting here (th-cam.com/video/wIdvnVTVwqk/w-d-xo.html) and at about 28:25 begins Howard Gayton's, in my view quite excellent, piece on Commedia dell'arte in which he demonstrates himself to be clearly excellently gifted and knowledgeable ; indeed, an 'expert'.
Derek!
