Yes, I 've seen a film version of Masada. For the medieval period, I one of my favourites is The Lion in Winter, with the great Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn. The acting is superb, and the intro with the theme music and the stone carvings is one of the best opening scenes I've seen (along with The Big Country). Jacobites: The Culloden 1964 film / documentary on YT is quite good. WWI: Kubrick's Paths of Glory, and also The Life and Times of Colonel Blimp. There are many great WWII films. I like Ice Cold in Alex with John Mills and the beautiful Sylvia Syms. Murphy's War is a lesser known film but also to be recommended.

Could you give a detailed analysis on Marc Antony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral? (Rephrase for video title)
I’m not a huge Marc Antony guy nor do I think he was a talented politician/general. But the speech is one of the greatest performances in ancient history. It swung Rome into being muderously against the liberators (if I recall right they hung a man with a similar name)
Also it’s often misunderstood because of the “friends Roman countrymen” speech. I would love to hear your analysis of it and what you consider truth in the matter. Keep up the great work

I just add that in The Fall of Roman Empire there are the only III century helmets historically accurate in the whole history of cinema. It's the only movie in which you can see a reconstruction of Heddernheim type 2 cavalry helmet, or of legionary Italic helmets (more or less) type H. There is also a movie about Constantine the Great produced by HBO "Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire series" with David Threlfall as Constantine, Danny Webb as Licinius and Charles Dale as Maxentius, there are nice intercisa type helmets even with crested version and the battle of Milvian Bridge is nice, as it nice the labarum and its supposed effects in the battle against Licinius.

The "Roughriders" miniseries was a fun watch with it's climax of the charge up San Juan and Kettle Hills during the Spanish American War. I bet the Spanish wish they had Maxim guns and German advisors like they did in the movie. Was directed by Hollywood maverick and history buff John Milius who also did the enjoyable boy's own adventure style "The Wind and the Lion," a highly fictionalized story of Theodore Roosevelt intervening in turn of the century Morocco. To quote another Milius' screenplay- "It's not the way it was, it's the way it should have been."

Northwest Passage (1940) is an excellent adventure film set during the Seven Year's War (French and Indian War) telling the story of the Roger's Rangers raid on the French-allied Abenaki town of St Francis. It is surprisingly grim at parts for its age but many will find its views of Indigenous people problematic. Think it is on Tubi, my VHS recently bit the dust from repeat viewings.

Two of the history movies that affected me a lot were (1) The story about an Egyptian (precise title forgotten) which I think was a Finnish made movie and (2) Taras Bulba which starred Tony Curtis. I've also enjoyed some Italian language history movies including a music biopic about the composer Toselli starring Rosanno Brazzi. I can never get Toselli's charming little "Serenade" out of my head especially having heard it at midnight played by Andre Rieu accompanied by the sounds of a nightingale!

The real problem for me in the "Eagle" is the ambush of the IX Hispana, which evidently occurs because the Roman legionary legate forgets to post his auxiliary cavalry scouts forward of his auxilia cavalry and on his flanks and the lack of pila, which had yet to be abandoned, the formation of static century squares instead of centuries drawing together into cohorts and taking the initiative to attack the ambush while the rearguard maneuvers on the enemy flanks. Sort of Teutoburger Forest all over again. Sort of projecting what happened to the IX during the revolt of Boadicea.
Even after years of study of the Roman art of war, Hollywood still goes for the mass melee as a battle scene, when any Roman general worth his baton of command would never have allowed training and discipline to slide to a point where the centurions would allow their formations to break apart into man-on-man combat.

Here’s some further suggestions; Ty Power in Prince of Foxes (Borgia Italy) and Captain from Castille (Cortez expedition), El Cid (C. Heston again, great duel/joust), Paths of Glory (WWI French soldiers scapegoated and tried for failed operation much like Breaker Morant), WWII; Enemy at the Gates (Stalingrad snipers), Valkerie (Hitler assassination attempt), Downfall ( Hitler’s last days), Anthropoid (assassination of R. Heydrich), The Man Who Never Was (Operation Mincemeat), The Battle of the River Plate aka Pursuit of the Graf Spree (in US).

Mr.Goldworthy; perhaps when you cover camps/bases, can you
touch on the logistical supply pack animals ( oxen. mules, etc.)
ie; how and where were they kept when striking a marching
camp...and how many pack animals might a legion require
generally and how many in cases where they had to transport
everything including fodder and water for all the animals when
traversing extremely arid and barren regions.

I'll just say that I thought it was quite well done, but it still bothers me how that message could have stayed dry and legible. Augustus is a beautiful kiddeh.
You name yours after Roman Emperor's, Jon Parshall names his after the carriers of Kido Butai, I name my ferrets after Tolkien or Ancient - Viking Age personalities. I wonder what other historians name theirs after.
No "A Funny Thing Happened The Way To The Forum"?
As a "Viking" (I dislike the name) and 20th Century Military Historian, there is NO "Viking" movies I like. This I would agree. But I too like The Warlord.
I hate the Russel Crowe Robin Hood though I like him. Those 13th century landing craft like D-Day... oh Gods... A funny fact; about 50 of us Danish Viking reenactors were contacted to do the fighting scenes. The movie company would only pay us rates of standard English extras, which is quite a bit below Danish minimal pay, and not sufficient for the thousands of hours we put into becoming good at what we do.
KoH I hate. It is a left-wing preachy piece of propaganda that still manages to insert a "white savior" despite being left-wing, anti-west. Which is really sad, for his The Duellists was really good.
I also hate the "Medieval Filter" all films use, where everything is grey and brown, when The Middle Ages were respelendent in colours.
1612 is definately Putolini warming up to attack Ukraine and Poland, but has some good rapier duels. But the very best swordfighting is in the Polish "The Deluge" That is realistic fighting. And you are right about Captain Alatriste, the duels in it are quite good as well.
Last of The Mohicans, yes- yes, rather good. Waterloo, filmed in the USSR as well, good battle scenes. Master and Commander is masterful. As are the novels. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly has some good depictions of war, as it takes place amidst the Civil War.
All Quiet is quite good- both the 1931 and 1979 versions. The 1931 naturally most realistic. The Blue Max is also a nice one. And for WW2 of course The Iron Cross.
Stalingrad (1993) is really good (whereas Enemy at The Gates is uttter BS and Zaitsev's book is a bunch of Vranyo- which is sad for he does come across as a good soldier and nice guy), as is Das Boot and The Cruel Sea. "Come And See" is a very good and accurate depiction, which means I would not recommend it to most people- it is fully Nightmare Fuel.
A Bridge Too Far is a classic, it is full of mistakes though and pins the blame for failure the wrong place (see Al Murray's and James Holland's detailed treatment in their podcast- or even TIK's in his from before he went insane). Thin Red Line is quite good. SPR and Fury are... best not mentioned in my presence. I dislike them. I used to think that the first ten minutes of SPR was good, but I have since learned better. Greyhound is awful.
You reminded me of Battle of The Bulge, oh gods, I had repressed that. Now I need a beer or rum.
Battle of Algiers is a GREAT depiction of the French Algerian War. Really good, and a very fair portrayal of the evil of both sides- it is better than many documantaries, and the only terror cell we ever had in Denmark used it as a blueprint for their organisation.
I like Hamburger Hill and especially Full Metal Jacket, but not so much Platoon. It is okay, but not Oscar-worthy IMO.
    Happy new year.
