Bro, it will be worth it in 5 years when there's a good time, sipping tea and biscuits and discussing with your closed ones. At this moment, it's the matter of earning and supporting oneself. I've seen people not even getting the support of relatives in USA for temporary stay, if one graduates before getting a job. Some even apply for those under the table jobs, risking themselves. Please provide some constructive advice, as people here need practical headway into this job market.while the emotional part of it makes sense, all of it goes to window when visa and financial situation comes into play.

Back in college, a friend of mine sent 300 job applications in two months. Every day, they'd start with a checklist: resumes tailored, cover letters perfected, and LinkedIn messages sent. Out of those 300, they got exactly two responses: one was a rejection within an hour (impressive speed, honestly), and the other invited them to an interview that turned out to be for a pyramid scheme. Eventually, they attended a career fair where a recruiter gave them the best advice of their job hunt: 'Just apply online.'
I’m sure everyone here has their own version of this story-if you don’t, you’re probably a recruiter. But hey, persistence pays off… sometimes. For those who’ve weathered this storm, let’s share our stories and remind each other we’re not alone in this maze.
    Looking forward connecting with you

This too shall pass. Unfortunately, US has a boom bust economy and you just happened to have graduated during a bust. I came to US in 97 and graduated in 99. I found a job at a start up from which I was laid off in October of 2001. That recession was the worst I have seen in my lifetime. Many of my friends ended up moving back to India. There is a bit of luck involved while looking for a job in a bad market. I had actually employed a similar tactic as yours. I went to every office in Mountain View with my resume. There I met a founder of a company who ended up offering a job. So good luck to you. Many of my friends who went back to India, a lot of them eventually came back when the market improved. Just give it your best!
Also, this is the best time to come to US for studies. Because by the time you are finished with your studies, the market would have recovered! Plus there would be much less competition because there will be huge dip in graduates in couple of years

I am sorry but i find this extremely unrealistic. Based on the probability that "the market will recover", you should not invest above 40,000$ to complete 2 years masters in the US.
If you are paying 40,000$+ on a probability, I can only think of you as a fool. Sorry for the language but it helps gets the point across.
And there has been no drop in the number of people going to the USA for education. Hence your complete argument about Market Recovery falls apart.
Again, i am sorry for hitting you with harsh reality, but i wanted to alert those who may have dreams about going there to lower their expectations or avoid going completely.

Despite software engineering jobs getting outsourced from USA. There is a still a high chance of getting a job with better salary and work life balance than India. Also, once people will figure out AI , they will have a good direction in pursuing jobs. India literally have far more less jobs with Bs taxes and no work life. They treat you like especially if you work in MNC.

Hi Abhi, I can understand your frustration. Seeing the current scenario I wonder sometimes whether coming to Masters to learn is one of the most stupid thing I did. The joke is I'm a experienced ML Engineer who worked for more than 4.5 years professionally, and kind of applied for ML interns and got rejected left and right (Auto Rejects). The only thing I saw is people come in Fall Intake they start applying from September which I felt tooo stupid as we are ourselves making situations harder, as people exploit this scenario more it becomes more bad. Because none of them I see are doing what they came for in first place to atleast become Master in that topic. Seeing this I felt too bad but seems the conditions won't change soon and honestly I have been asking the Juniors I mentored back in India about referrals and they even ignore haha. We are all in this, let us be patient and hope for the best man. All the best to you, Keep Grinding, Don't lose hope.

I really don't know what masters degree mean to them. Its losing its value because of these guys. We are "Engineerings", We need to be given some value. I joined a US defense contractor and was called slurs, micromanaged, and not trusted to do my job even tho I was only software engineer there working on the project. Eventually my manager called me on my remote day, screaming at me asking why I wasnt in office (ive been remote on fridays since Ive joined). Eventually I was let go after I completed the project and eventually found a new job 3 months later for a smaller place with much better benefits. The advice I have is to know your worth, keep your head up, and look for the most recent postings on google, linkedin, reddit, and job forums like monster and stuff based in your city and then look for adjacent titles. So Im a software engineer but i looked for titles like analyst, data, information, systems, etc. apply to those jobs. Good luck and hope for the best, you got this!

The job market is tough everywhere, but the biggest advantage of working abroad compared to South Asian countries is that you can do various odd jobs like working in retail, driving for Uber, and similar roles and still earn enough to cover basic expenses. In contrast, in South Asian countries, even with such jobs, it’s often challenging to make ends meet. That difference alone makes a huge impact.

In the same boat right now. I am glad someone said it because 90% of the people do not have guts to. Reddit is full of anti-India sentiment where people call Indian students H1B hungry squatters and openly say that Indian students have bad resumes. They say that education I got out of a world class American university is worth my hefty education loan. But, what use is that education if it cannot get me a job? Wasn't this degree supposed to teach me skills useful in a job?
Worse, we choose a university based on csrankings but never have their placement statistics. I am pretty sure the admit statistics would be different had those been made public.
EOD honestly, my tier-2 college degree was 10x better. It atleast landed me a job good enough to pay off my education loan in an year, thanks to campus placements.

I received a video suggestion right after a rejection, and it got me reflecting on the experience:
The interviewer seemed to be in a rush to wrap up the meeting even before it really began.
It turned out they had sponsorship issues, which made the entire process feel pointless.
They expected a fresh graduate to have extensive experience and cutting-edge, highly creative projects-an unrealistic expectation.
The person interviewing me was a senior director who didn’t seem to have the patience to listen to my projects. Maybe I sounded boring, but I wasn’t even given a fair chance.
When someone rude is conducting the interview, they can amplify even the slightest self-doubt, no matter how confident you feel.
I’ve submitted nearly 4,000 applications, and it feels like there’s no movement. If hiring is frozen, who’s doing the work? Is AI replacing us?
The U.S. should reconsider issuing student visas if there aren’t enough opportunities for international graduates.
It feels like the system is more about generating revenue from tuition fees than ensuring a future for international students. They don’t seem to care because we’re not citizens of this country.

If you're only interested in doing a job at these top companies, you should probably step back and rethink your approach. If a door is opened by a pull, no matter how much hard you work pushing the door, you won't be successful opening the door.

Tech market is just a cyclical market of boom and bust.
I graduated with a Bachelors in Computer Science in 2019, took me 19 months to find my first job, which was a 3 month contract, not even kidding, and the pandemic and lock downs that started in 2020 only delayed the process.
Then, luckily, I landed my second job in June of 2021, but as of July of this year, I was recently laid off. And it's been another 4 months of constantly applying and getting rejected. Not even lying, I have easily applied to 1,000+ places, and been rejected from vast majority of them.
Even though I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science with 3.4 years of Professional Experience as a Software Engineer. I have interviewed at 7 different companies over the last 4 months, and usually, the only response you get from the Company is "unfortunately we have decided to move forward with someone more experienced".
I don't know what to do at this point, the market is brutal and cruel, but I just gotta keep going and hoping I can land an offer soon. It's a numbers game.

Companies would prefer US citizens as their first option. With inflation even companies can't hire. CPI and job reports says it all. You could try local stores like Walmart, Banks, Target, Blackrock start at the lowest position and then make your way up in the ranks. start as a cashier and then apply at the headquarters. different strategies. good luck

When you have these skills on your resume, your hire ability goes way up in today’s market. These are the market needs of today and the best part is that nobody has more than 1-2 years of experience working on these so the ground is somewhat level.

If Google india reaches out to you, would you accept that offer? Or do you prefer US only?

Stop chasing big tech, try different domains like finance, they need quants as well. Try reaching out to companies in business area that are booming. If you are good at math, maybe try insurance companies, learn some risk analytics, insurance modeling. Tons of options are available if you chase smartly in my opinion, maybe try management consulting. This thought most people have is that they are good in a certain area and can solve bunch of leetcode problems and would just chase big tech just won’t work anymore. Happy to help you in the right direction if you read this.
