I am riding a Wilier Triestina...I am italian (but leaving in Germany)...I was born and lived many years closer to Bassano del Grappa. It's great honor & pleasure watch this video. Well done!!
Jon: You forgot to mention why Magni has the inner tube in his teeth - connected to his bars. He was riding (uphill) with a broken collar bone and couldn't pull on the bars (or get out of the saddle, for that matter). He was also found not guilty, possibly incorrectly, of war crimes, as a supporter / member of the Italian fascists during WWII.
jackseph03 Yep, noticed it as well. Video had some nice graphics, but the commentary?? Not surprised really as Jon is someone who seems to only judge bikes by some vapid ‘photo rules’ - crank in the 3 o’clock/ valves at the 6 o’clock. Very shallow.
His fascist politics are so sad, especially since Italian communists had liberated Trieste and many other northern Italian enclaves months before the US and Soviet troops had arrived. The communist workers had taken over factories from the generally fascist owners/bosses and either kicked them out on their bums or required them to take jobs on the shop floor in like everyone else. They also gave jobs to soldiers who had been disabled by war and who had been left to poverty under Italian capitalism/fascism. This all horrified the American generals when they finally arrived. I wouldn't be surprised if Willier's factory was one of these. All this was documented in the 1991 book by Noam Chomsky "Deterring Democracy."
@@patrickoshea9398 Very shallow? expected a bit more historical perspective? Perhaps a retrospective of fascism from Mussolini through WWII? Piss off and go to the history channel. It's GCN, and this was an interesting video.....about BIKES!!
I like all Italian bikes and things cycling. I just bought a 2012 Masi Alare road bike for $240 here in Texas. She's Euro blue and white, 56 cm, aluminum frame, carbon fork, Shimano Sora 2 X 9 drivetrain and weighs 21.2 pounds complete. I've named her Sophia and can't wait for her to be delivered.
You missed the most obvious reason they are producing in the far east: it's cheap. That is reason enough for bike companies to have their frames built over there.
The size aspect Claudio mentioned, and many articles mention is no joke. My size XL Cento10SL not only fits my 6'2 body like a glove. But is very aggressive while somehow maintaining a comfortable ride. Another very important factor to me is that the proportions are great, my XL Cento10 looks aesthetic and clean. Meanwhile my previous size 57.5(XL) Pinarello prince was Massive.
I own one cento 1 SR 2015.. like it really much, thinking of repainting it to the ramato color.. it has slightly angled top tube.. like most of the high end bike these days.. wilier rocks
I got 2 wiliers, one is 20 years old Alu, and the other is a cento 1air 2014 I really love these bikes , they run perfectly , i'd to have a cromovelato one
I briefly had a Triestina...got the frame cheap from a mail order house, felt illegal paying so little. Bought it mostly for the name, wish I had kept it.
Go and see Colnago,,,,,,COLNAGO,,,,,,,or even. DER❤️SA.......since you are in the motherland.....you are the best Jon....you bring out the kid spirit In all of us old farts that love cycling......

Great video JC is excellent and the bikes are really beautiful. At 3:36 "Need I go on?" Unfortunately yes, Femke van den driessche. Ironic that one of the next bikes featured is a lovely e-bike...
‘In 1995 we made 1,000 frames per year. Now our number is 30,000,’ says Andrea Gastaldello, co-owner of Wilier. As a result, Wilier’s headquarters is used less as a factory and more as a centre for assembly, design and prototype development. As with most of the high-end Italian brands - such as Pinarello, De Rosa and Colnago - frame production largely takes place in Asian factories
I'm a huge fan of the Superleggera and that "Modern Classic" style of bike. Do you think you guys can do a piece on that sort of steed? Superlegerra Vs. Colnago Master?
Back in the 1960s my local bike builder had one of his frames copper plated for a customer. It cost a fortune (for the time), looked awesome and the plater said it ruined his vat and wouldn't do another! And the owner polished the fork crown so much that he wore away the plating.
You gave me an idea for another road bike that is made in Italy. I wonder if the De Bernardi factory still exist in Italy. I like the steel bike. I did take a look website. The prices seems decent. Cheers!
If given a blind test of bikes from Trek, Specialized, Canyon, Bianchi, Wilier, etc would you be able to feel any noticeable difference when riding? All of these high-end bikes have very similar geometry and they are all built with the same or similar materials, I think GCN should investigate this.
What's your opinion on Wilier Toni bevilacqua? Saw an cheap offer for it. 599€. I have heard bad things about it like it's brakes are not optimal for descent and it weights 21 lbs. I am new to the cycling scene, what bike are recommended for beginners?
Nice to see Jon's complete inability to keep his hands off of anything he can get to within touching distance of is still going strong since eurobike! Next GCN challenge: look but don't touch 😁
Question For You. I did not notice a 'Contact' phone number for assistance in ordering from your cycling kits web page. Do you have such a number that I can call ?
Nice video to see where my P.7 was painted and finished. No mention that Wilier is an acronym for W l’Italia LIberata E Redenta, where W is an abbreviation for "viva!", as other riders that ask me about my bike want to know WHO Wilier is.
I live near there, you could of popped in for a cafe for before we tackled Monte Grappa. You should do the Brevette (all the routes up the Grappa)on a Wilier in the shortest time, make a good video of a beautiful set of rides.
I love these manufacturing facility visits. Generally they are an interesting mix of old style and modern painting and assembly facilities. Since the frames are almost always built in East Asia, painting and final assembly are the only things done in these plants. Since all of the frames come from the same few plants and the non frame components are all from the same few manufacturers, I wonder if there are any real differences between modern bikes or if we are really mostly paying for branding.
Thanks for the tour Jon. I've been really tempted to plunk down a large sum for a Cento10NDR. Did you happen to get your grubby little hands on some coupons for a discount?

That admiral blue paint job made me drool a bit not gonna lie. Fascinating and well presented by Mr. Cannings!
Fun fact: the "arrow" logo of the Wilier Triestina is actually called "alabarda" and it's the symbol of Trieste
Great fact thanks for sharing
thank you
what??? no mention of Giordana Cottur of Trieste
Wow, that was heaps of fun.

Another reason why some of the Chinese make frames just as good as the big euro brands.

I really love the Wilier Triestina designs and colors!
Amazing! Love Wilier even more now.
Brilliant vid Jon, its great to learn about heritage paintwork schemes and how they keep their traditions.
No one paints a bike like they do it seems like. That bronze and silver finish is stunning.
I want one. I just like how their bikes look. Que bella!
Love my Wilier Cento 10 Air. Does everything really well.
I like the way that Jon presents in aero mode. Elbows tucked in to avoid drag.
Always efficient even at presenting
Regardless of anything else, Wilier make super nice bikes. Nice video Jon.
Why not do a factory tour of B'Twin Village in Lillie?
Owen Chua good idea. GCN do it!!!
Or maybe a factory tour of Chinese cycling components/bike manufacturers. I'd like for them to review groupsets like Microshift or Sensah too.
Because you can buy b-twin bikes without taking out a bank loan. Where's their profit in convincing you to buy good quality, affordable bikes?
Nice idea, I wanna see them do it!

I'm confused about the brake comment. Why aren't your brakes in the UK like in Italy?
For me in the US, we have the left lever for the front and right for rear. In Italy, I believe that it is the opposite.
