Yea, you’re on the right track. This song is about two con artists who meet at a resort where they’re trying to scam wealthy people into financially beneficial relationships. But when they find each other they realize they’ve found someone they’d stop their hustling for. They’re never gonna love again because they found their soul mate.

Now you hang from lips like the gardens of Babylon with your boots beneath my bed, forever is the sweetest con” meaning they let themselves fall in love, which they never believed in before and they might still end up heartbroken but they’re willing to try for forever with each other.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was built by the King to please the King's wife. However, it is questioned whether or not the garden ever even existed. How this parallels with the song is so incredibly beautiful--her love interest uses his tricks to please her (building the garden), but did he even ever love her in the first place (the gardens may not have existed)? "I've had some tricks up my sleeve" - this may imply she's done using "tricks" for deception, and more so her tricks are no longer tricks--they're real. Her vulnerable, loving moments are natural and candid. "I'm never gonna love again" - this is the mysterious part of the song for me. Is this a happy feeling? Or is it sad? @karinalumen9722 no, it's not said in an interview anywhere. this was my interpretation based on the lyrics at face value 3 years ago. you're welcome to explain your interpretation. My interpretation has changed since TTPD was released but at face value I still read it pretty much how I wrote it above, mostly due to the present tense of the bridge and final verse it sounds like they end up together and sacrifice their "cowboy" lifestyles in hope that they've found the real thing even if it might not be. The main difference now is I think this could be a metaphor and retelling of her and a particular person's connection to each other and how they related on feeling a bit on the outside of the scene they spent their time in. When we get to the bridge I think it turns into what she had hoped for their ending to look like, but it's just a fantasy, like the gardens of Babylon. That changes the meaning of "I'm never gonna love again" at the end to me which I now think is her thoughts when she's snapped out of the fantasy, back to reality. But at the time of writing this originally, I didn't have that context so I just took it at face value, which I would guess is what she wanted at the time.

i LOVE the gardens of babylon line, to hang from someones lips is another way of saying paying attention/listening. so this character hanging to her lips and taking in everything is so beautiful to her, like the gardens of babylon! :)

Cowboy like me is the last great American Dynasty of evermore - it tells this amazing story that should be a movie - in my head - girl goes to one of those tourists ranches and meets a cowboy who works there - you know the ones who will sell you on this idea that their life is perfect and fun and suddenly you’re buying all their merch because you want to remember this feeling. Girl falls in love with cowboy - only she learns his little tricks and decides to use them in her own life. It’s kinda on the nose with just what Taylor did - learned the tricks of country music then took it somewhere else and made it so much bigger

Some people think that the lyric referring to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, make it question if the romance was real or a con the entire time since they are the only one of the 7 wonders of the world that not only no longer exists, and are disputed between historians to have ever existed in the first place. (I like to believe they gave up the con life and the love was real though😂❤️)
