I thank you for the video. I used a twist tie from trash bags and stripped half the plastic coating as a snake. I bent a hook on the end then hooked it over the trailing edge of the electrical tape then wrapped the tape around it. It pulled the strips through easily, the whole job took a little over 10 minutes including the red led’s.
After watching the first 15 minutes of your video, I sure I DIDN'T want to hassle with adding the "Plug 'n Play" LED kit... BUT when the "light show" started at about 15:30, I was sold. Thanks for walking us thru the process!
Well done sir. I just got my Ultrix and the LED light kit. Had I not found this video I probably would have stumbled over a cliff like the rest of the lemmings that have cut their planes apart installing this kit just because that's what the first guy that tried it did. Thanks for taking the time to try a different approach.
I just cut the foam on the sides of the bottom plate to install taped it all in place and was done in a little less then 10 minutes foam tac glue was used to fix cut in foam.
Good video! I just ordered a umx ultrix which will be here tomorrow. Also ordered the LED kit. It seems Horizon Hobby must have had a lot of complaints about the difficulty of install because they have buried the LED kit on their site and it is a little difficult to find. They don't link to it on the Ultrix page any longer. The part number is EFLU6455
You are welcome. Noe that some people just open up the nacelle. I wanted to offer an alternative solution. As a new Ultrix owner be forewarned that the motors on these use solid bushings instead of ball bearings, and need frequent oiling to prevent seizing up. I have a demo video showing how to tear down the motors for lubricating the front bearing. th-cam.com/video/z9WVA7-VCNc/w-d-xo.html The alternative is to swap the motors for 1102 13,500kV motors with ball bearings. Thanks for the video AND music. Very complete. I would have never attempted it until I saw your video. I am hoping the lights will give her more visibility. I couldn't get the black electrical tape to stick to either wire when I tried to pull it through the fuselage belly. I found the Blenderm tape that I have worked best. I did also cut the engine cowls as I wanted to dry lube the motors at the same time. My first Ultrix was shipped with stuck motors, so I had gotten some practice with removing them. This replacement plane was glued heavier, and removing was more difficult. Good comment about taping the wires securely to avoid damage when inserting battery. The wires are microscopic. Am luving the plane now that I have motors that actually spin. Have maybe 25 flights. Broke the nose cone on the first flight, but otherwise doing well.
Thank you for the reply, and vindicating why I put it up. Glad you found it useful (and entertaining). Yeah, not thrilled by the solid bushings in such a high RPM motor. We are starting to use different motors in our Ultrix's. I have these now: www.banggood.com/Eachine-Novice-I-75mm-FPV-Racing-Drone-Spare-Part-NC1102-1102-13500KV-1-2S-Brushless-Motor-p-1587388.html?rmmds=buy&cur_warehouse=CN
Thanks for this video. I'm sure the gang at Horizon are still laughing their butts off at that Plug 'n Play line. At least this mod is doable, thanks again.
Hehehe...when I worked in Information Technology we referred to Windows "Plug and Play" as "Plug and Pray". I think you just experienced the RC equivalent ;-) This could generate some UFO Reports ;-) See you in the Air!
MANY years ago I use to go to Steve Gibson's site at GRC.com for the latest windows security tool or utility. The guy is like a child prodigy and programming genius who had his own business at 14, and he found all kinds of bugs and holes in earlier versions of Windows. One tool deactivated Plug and Play. He called it "Unplug and Pray". ;-) www.grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm
Plug and pray! LOL! Subbing! Been flying RC for about 20 years. Started with electric, never nitro. Boy has it advanced!! My 1st LIPO was 1500 mah 3 cell, I think it cost around $80.00 and was very low C rating! LOL!!
Ground Control RC yea they were pretty $ back then!!! Most of us used NIMH and NICAD. Heavy but they got the job done for a lot less bucks! My first really hot plane was a Stryker by Parkzone. We proceeded to upgrade it with brushless power. We started a build thread on RC Groups and Wattflyer called Stryker, how far can you take it! It was a blast! Later moved on to many other planes like the Multiplex Fun Jet. Mine was flying on 6S at about 130+ MPH clocked on my buddies hand held GPS module he used while flying his para sail wing!! It would just fit in my canopy and we could red MPH etc after the flight.
I am an avid member there, and this video is posted in that very thread. All other methods involve cutting foam and re-gluing or prying free existing glue joints and re-gluing. I wanted to offer an option that required neither. It's all good. Happy flying!
Greetings. Quoted from my other Ultrix lights video: "The receiver uses channel-6 to change to one of the 5 light patterns in sequence each time you flick the switch up and down. I use a Spektrum DX6i transmitter. Channel-6 is the flaps switch. I went into programming mode and set flaps at 100% up and 100% down. EDIT for additional info: I am told that with a DX9 you press the bind button." That's it. Happy flying!
Hello frown the Netherlands. I have not yet you'd the switch or activation of a channel tot switch patterns. It will probably be very simple and iam overlooking something but can anyone please. Tell me how to switch light patterns?? THX
A transmitter with 6 or more channels is needed. Channel six (FLAPS) operates the light selection on my Spektrum DX6i by flicking the switch down and then up again. Channel five (gear) is used to turn SAFE mode off and on.
Ahhhh - thanks for the question and reply! I just installed my lights and I couldn’t figure out how to change the pattern (I also got the left/right wingtip colors wrong - but I think I’m leaving them : red for right!)
That’s for posting I have some I need to fit, certainly doesn’t look easy, how is your ultrix in such good condition? Even with standard props which I found to be very weak
I modify and fly planes and have a lot of projects going on, so my Ultrix is still fairly fresh with only a handful of flights on it. I hope the video helps. Another method is to just cut the foam with a new razor blade, slip in the wires and then re-glue the foam with epoxy or some other foam-safe glue. Happy Flying.
@@Doggeslife thanks for the tip I've had about 50 flights on mine, had to pull it out of a tree earlier the nose is a little battle worn, upgraded props to gemfans

So glad it proved beneficial. Happy flying!
Glad it was helpful!
I was able to fish the lights through the holes by the motors without using the make shift wires. I used tweezers to grab on and pull them through
Nice. I had a few obstructions in my motor nacelles, including motor wires right in the way.
Whatever it takes to light 'er up! Happy flying!
I just cut the foam on the sides of the bottom plate to install taped it all in place and was done in a little less then 10 minutes foam tac glue was used to fix cut in foam.
That was "Plan B" should the wire-draw method not work. Nothing is guaranteed. Happy flying!
That's probably what I'd do too, but his is cleaner without the extra weight of the glue.
