    I wonder what the bhopping would feel like in this. quake 2 bhop worked almost the same as hl1 since the engines were so similar but most people actually spacebar bhopped because it let you hold it just a little bit before landing and still worked.

      well the engine is basically the same if you open the console of counter-strike and type sv_gravity 800 the value 800 is the default counter-strike gravity but this cvars work on both engine and console i dont rmb but i think to b-hop its need to be set to 600 or 700

      It really makes it even more impressive how much of a technical leap Half Life 1 was in it's time. Apparently, Half Life was the first ever commercially available game to have true skeletal animation, hence why they look all wibbly-wobbly in quake 1.

    GoldSrc (HL's engine) is a highly modified version of idTech 2, Quake and Quake 2's engine. Here, it is running in the original unmodified engine. Without the modifications, you can see all the models became unstable, like they were bags of liquid. Also, transparent textures don't work.

      Quake used a model format called MD2. MD2 models save their vertex locations with a really low precision. When the frames are then tweened together, the vertices all shift to slightly different locations, causing the "wavy" effect. This was corrected with the introduction of the MD3 model, which saved the vertices in a more precise way :)

      In relation to the origin of the model (being 0, 0, 0 in most cases). Then the model is positioned using matrices (just a simple translation).

      This was because the quake engine was before the invention of the skeletal animation system. Back then they had to animate all polygons insted of animating it from bones.

      It's all about vertex precision. The next frame-based model format used by Quake (MD3) used more precise vertices, eliminating the wavy effect (before bone animation).

    Either "Source was built from ground up and contains no Quake code" or "They bought the license and used it to make GoldSrc and Half-Life", because the source engine is built from the goldsrc.
    What (is supposed to be) written from scratch is the source 2.
    "there are still bits of early Quake code in Half-Life 2" Cit Carmack.
    That said, we're a bunch of nerds :D

    GoldSrc (Half-Life 1 engine) is indeed a heavily overhauled Quake engine with some Quake 2 code in it.
    The most notable additions was a skeletal animation system, a 16-bit colour palette (so you could have transparency and blending colors), and significantly better AI.

    If anyone here has played the half life alpha tech demo, what you see here makes a lot of sense. Gldsrc was revolutionary. They added skeletal animation (that's why the models here wiggle), transparency, better scripting, light effects, better sound effects, and so much more.
    I don't know the link to the alpha rn but it should be a quick google.

      Except the models didn't looked like baloons,the models were worse,Barney's eyes were much bigger,the scientists were mute,there were no shotguns,the pistol and SMG had laser sounds,the hud would be like the Goldeneye's one,the textures were worse,the resolution were worse,the sounds were more detailed and messed up at the same time and Gordon Freeman were known as Ivan "The Space Biker".

    It runs on modified Quake 1 engine called "Kurok" :) -you can see colored lightmaps (not supported by Q1) for ex. Also models, textures and maps (not all of them) were converted from HL1 format to Q1 format and game logic has been (partially) rewritten (using HL-SDK code) to the "QuakeC" language (by Sisah).

      +xXblazmodzXx I think that people were expecting a full recreation of Half-Life using the Source engine. It's just kind of lazy looking. It's also very odd to see explosion and water effects from Half-Life 2 in HLSource because they look completely out of place. I don't think they even improved the textures, they're still the same and look like crap.

      vissova Not only that but it's unbalanced and very poorly optimized. Ammo does different damage, AI doesn't behave the same and actually has a LOT LESS animations/states, collisions are bad, gordon's movement is horribly fast or too slow, etc...

    Even today's Valve's engines have some Quake code in them. A lot of people don't realize this nor even that HL1 was made on the Quake engine, so it is good this video is up so people learn the true roots of all FPS games.

    The GoldSrc engine , used by Half-Life , CS1.6 , CS CZ and other games is a heavily modified verion of the Quake engine(id Tech 2). Thats why Half-Life can run well on Quake engine too.

    Did quake not support transparent textures? Because all the textures with transparency are filled in.
    It's really interesting to see this, though. It's a good look at what valve improved upon with goldsrc.

      There's an alpha version of Half-Life with the version number 0.52. The alpha build comes with a tech demo map that showcases many of the new features Valve had added to the Quake engine at the time, with transparency being one such feature.

      GLQuake supported translucency, as seen with its water, but I think it was more of a special trick than an actual implementation of translucency.

      Just a lazy port for funsies. DXT1 without alpha possibly. Or maybe the engine only supported TGA in those days. Not an expert on modding something quite that ancient though.

      The grating on some of the walls aren't see through. The resonance cascade looks like somebody is playing wav files through the speakers and nothing is really happening.

    Actually one of the big points of this was that the Kurok engine (what this is on) would run on the psp, thus giving us half life on psp.

    From what I hear, getting half life 1 maps running in quake is simple enough, since HL1 maps are like BSP 1.2 where quake would be 1.0. But to get all this running is fascinating.

    The console error messages suggest it's running on Darkplaces, which used to be one of the best ports for the original Quake engine about 13 years ago.

    I believe the GoldSrc engine used a deep blue as transparent, the original Quake engine used pink.

      Nope, id Tech 2 is engine of Quake II. First Quake's engine is called "Quake Engine". And GoldSrc is heavily modified version of Quake Engine.

    Yeah, exactly like that! When Source was developed, it was slowly replacing every part of GoldSrc until it was a completely new engine. Quake physics were replaced by Havoc, a new system for processing models and textures was built, etc.

    Half-life was based on a heavily modified quake 1 engine with many many customizations. But it is still q1 engine, not q2. The polycount on the models is far lesser than q2. Kingpin and soldier of fortune used q2 engine. But the finished result is heavier to run than q2. The weakest system that I got halflife to run on fast with minimum 30fps and 800x600 res was a 166MHz p1 MMX, with 32 mb of ram and software mode. It can run on a slower system with a 3d accelerator (e.g 3Dfx).-continued above-

    One neat feature is that GoldSrc engine can distinguish walking sufraces, like when you walk on metal it sounds like it , when you walk on grass it sounds like grass etc.

    Half-Life's own engine is GoldSrc which is based on the Quake engine licensed from ID software. They kept the graphics-stuff but rewrote pretty much everything else.
    GoldSrc's AI system is essentially written from scratch.
    IMHO, In comparison to the unmodified Quake engine, GoldSrc heavily improved on gameplay mechanics.

    I love all the 'corrections' about the engine 'actually' being GoldSrc.. Back when HL first came out there was no such thing as the GoldSrc engine. Half-Life is a combination of the Quake and Quake2 engines, both of which which Valve had licensed from id Software. Years later this engine was named GoldSource when Valve began working on the Source engine for HL2, to differentiate the codebases from one-another, as the Source engine is derived from the GoldSource engine.
