Multiple wings did have practical use, within reason. The reason Red Baron preferred triplanes is more wings meant better maneuverability at the cost of speed. Since biplanes and triplanes didn't move very fast to begin with, the ability to turn on a dime was of greater benefit for some pilots
The Sopwith Triplane was successfull, the difference was in the wing chords against the Fokker Triplzne that came later. The Sop Tripe could climb faster than the Fokker but not out turn it. It did have problems in dives which may have been to cheaper wires used by the contract companies building them compared to the original builder. Also, servicing wasn’t designed simpler and more efficiently. It was the step between the Pup and Camel and had notable combat successes with the RNAS its primary user.

@@juliadagnall5816 yes, because aeroplanes with multiple wings have more aerodynamic drag. The added drag at increased speeds would tear off the wings. This is partly why as time went on planes that held speed records had two or one wing.
Richthofen did not prefer triplanes. For starters the Dr.I was too weak structurally and he only started to use it in earnest after this deficiency was fixed. He was also more successful in an Albatros. Then there is the fact that the plane he was gushing over at the end of his career was a biplane (Fokker D.VII) That he is associated with the Dr.I is a fluke of history. My guess is that it is because this is the plane he was shot down in.
Also it should be mentioned, it was the short span of the wings combined with the all moving vertical stabilizer (same idea you see with modern supersonic jets) and extra bracing of the wings in the form of struts that allowed the Dr.I to turn the way it did. It was not simply a factor of multiple wings. Having more wings allowed for each wing to be shorter, increasing the load that could be placed on them. But even then, they still required extra bracing before they were suitable for combat.

Using a parachute as a safety precaution on a backpack helicopter sounds like something out of looney toons
Small aircrafts use parachutes ;) so why not on helicopters.
@@deadzio you're right, maybe they have explosives on the rotor so when the parachute is deployed it won't get caught up and they just hope the blades don't hit the pilot. If the pilot is still alive after 10 second the parachute opens

Seeing some of those old newsreel footage definitely makes me want to re-watch "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, or How I flew from London to Paris in 25 hours and 11 minutes". But at least I know now that the collapsing Cycleplane and the hopping helicopter thingy were from actual newsreels and not just made up for the movie.
Horatio Frederick Phillips and his 1904 (21 airfoils) & 1907 flying machines (200 airfoils) are the pinnacle of insanity. Even the Caproni Ca.60 pales in comparison. Though I still love the Ca.60. How can you not?
In world war 1 triplanes such as the Fokker and Sopwith Triplanes did have some advantages, high rate of climb and maneuverablilty, also relatively short take-off distance (eg. for a fighter launched from a ship). The problem was that it was at the cost of speed and even in WW1 the combination of speed and the right tactics generally trumped maneuverablity in a fight.
In part because speed allows fighter pilots to choose where and when to fight, while maneuverability aids in close or melee fights.

Photo at 3:12 is of Otto Lilienthal with one of his successful GLIDERS (not an ornithopter) who was an inspiration to the Wright Brothers.
Thank you for pointing this out. Gliders have had such an important part in the history of human flight, yet I feel we overlook and forget about this now.

The Snow Bird was only partially capable of human powered flight, it could not achieve flight on it's own but the human could work the wings to maintain altitude once it was gliding and only at gliding speed, they could not go faster and if they did not keep up the pace the speed would decrease enough to start losing altitude. Thus only partially capable of flight... well maintaining flight until the pilot is too tired is what it did.

The backpack helicopter, aside from it looking like a death trap, at that point you may as well simply have a compact 1 man helicopter that you could park and fold up.
I love how the Wright brothers' main rival Langley was such a hater that he claimed his boat-launched flight was the first flying machine. It was basically a grift, and instead of owning up to it, he bad mouthed the Wright bros wherever he went. He laughingly has an airport named for him in America.
Not only an airport, one of the US's first aircraft carriers was named after Langley. You are correct - he was nothing more than a carpetbagger and often a hater.
The biggest problem with the helicopter backpack is the same one that the jetpack has.......fuel. Carrying enough fuel for extended flights makes the backpacks to heavy to fly. Jetpacks look cool in Bond films but they only fly for a couple of minutes.
obviously ornithoptors are impractical. but it's still an interesting excersize. i know working on that isn't as practical as managing finance or studying to become a doctor or something, but i still think that kind of stuff is fun.
I'm sure if you really get down to it, plenty of handy, helpful or breakthrough inventions/discoveries may have happened while someone was working on a project that may seem "impractical" or "pointless" by most folks standards. For that reason, I agree. I find it fun.

No ornithopters, but human powered flight has been done. Both with traditional fixed wing style and I think one with helicopter style rotors.
yes, the gossamer albatross was a human powered fixed wing, and I recall seeing someone managed a human powered rotorcraft that was capable of flight in still air.

Many aircraft manufacturers (notably Airbus) are still trying to develop aircraft that are inspired in whole or in part by dragonflies --- which are the most awesome things that fly ever.
As an aside, I once heard a helicopter pilot describe flying a helicopter as "trying to juggle, standing on a skateboard that's perched on a yoga ball".
The T-60 was a Russian light tank, designed as a stopgap measure to replace the heavy losses suffered by the tank corps in the early days of WWII, and able to be produced by factories unable to handle dedicated tank production. It had a maximum armor thickness of 20mm, and a 20mm TNSh cannon as its main armament, later upgraded to a 45mm cannon. The designation and even the _role_ of 'main battle tank' did not exist until the production of tanks like the British Centurion at the end of WWII.
Ornithopter only implemented in small scales, but ones large enough to transport people run into extremely difficult problems of materials, science and power efficiency.
We are still using Philips's multi-wings for special drag and lift requirements.

Often forgotten, but back in 2012, there was a "successful" flying machine created by Floris Kaayk of the Netherlands. It had a web page, with many photos of the machines development. Later, there was even a video of his successful attempt to flap his arms using Wii remotes to control the wings to gain altitude.
Turns out it was an elaborate hoax that fooled many legitimate magazines that had to retract their articles.

I mean... yeah, flying by flapping wings would be great, but I'd take gliding as well. With modern materials, who knows what's possible. It feels kinda odd that we're still not even remotely close to actually "conquering" the skies.

Lol the 50 wing plane. I look at a water strider and don't see the efficiency, I just see it as if I grow 500 feet taller and a few extra legs that I too can walk on water

It doesn't matter how he flaps it. It's simply a matter of weight ratios. A 500 pound ornithopter cannot carry a 200 pound man.

An electric gyrocopter backpack might be possible today. Carbon fiber blades controlled by a GPS auto pilot would give the pilot simple 4 axis control. A couple of well places joysticks on a soldiers main tool (don't want my comment deleted) and you have flying soldiers. Then its our turn.

There was a successful flight here in New Zealand before the Wright Brothers, by farmer engineering man, Mr Pearse, sadly there wasn't any official evidence but the locals watched and agreed. It's now in the museum of transport and technology in Auckland New Zealand, 😊😊😊😊.
If it could not be repeated and verified, it was pointless anyway.

Human powered ornithopters aren't impossible, they're impossible on Earth. With a lower gravity but sufficiently thick atmosphere such as domed habitats or tall enough underground habitats on Mars, the Moon, or other places like them I see no reason such things couldn't be a lot of fun. If at first you don't succeed change all the parameters.

No. You all just babbel. Landlubbers can't sail a ship, and they suck at flying, and even thinking often gets awkward. Except, that is, the ones who have ever flewn a Pitts Special, or something similar. Shorter wings allow you to roll a whole lot faster. That is what more wings are all about. And then there is the problem that long wings simply break off, when you ask them to push you up really hard. Strength, you know? Short things ARE stronger.
I expect air-dropped tanks will become a thing once they figure out how to rig a powered thrust drop cradle that can be used in active combat and can slow the weight of everything enough to make the landing survivable. Drones may be good for striking at a target, but tanks are an order of magnitude or three better at holding an area.

Well, now days, with A LOT OF MONEY, you could take the lightest material known to date, make angel size robot wings on vest, (no using hands to flap, the wings should flap on their own)
I think the current limitation to jet packs and other self propelled devices is fuel efficiency, there is a working jet pack you can get 20+ feet off the ground and go fairly fast but it's only got like 2 miles of range while using very expensive fuel and there's obviously the issue of excessive noise and the difficulty of managing Arial traffic and the problem of If you're jetpack fails not only see you in danger so is anyone below you especially considering the highly combustive highly compressed fuel and the ensuing explosion that seems a likely result of a crash.

The US airdrops Abrams tanks by parachute but not fixed wings all the time, which is one of the main roles of a C130 Hercules. Wings, I don't need no stinking Wings to drop a tank on you. Only for the first part

Hey I'm kinda early
whats the point of paying to get access to paying for things, double evil. about the wings, just make them large enough proportionally to carry a human. of course light also. if birds fly, then humans fly also. well just calculate how long tail and wing extensions a human needs to have to make similar shape and power to a bird. or scale down a human to a bird size, with wings and tail attached. people all of them are not combinedly smart enough. some stuff just hangs. just fly a pedalled kite airplane. yep make wing surface area great again. yep its not the efficiency but total lift, per surface area. better fly slow than not fly at all. no, wide narrow wings are not the best automatically, for all situations. human goals are just a burden.
Another problem though is that our bones aren’t hollow
