It really does not matter if you are using a shotgun or a 22 rimfire just as long as you are having fun and it does not matter if you shoot them on the ground or on the wing. Great that you got your limit.
Bottom barrel is modified and top is IC choke. Also, with an o/u shotgun, always shoot the bottom barrel first and the top barrel second. Shooting the bottom barrel first has to do with the barrel being the lower bore axis in line with your shoulder. Thus, the muzzle flip is lower than with the higher bore axis of the top barrel. So firing the bottom barrel first allows for a quicker and more accurate (staying on target) follow up shot from the second (top) barrel. There’s articles written about it that can probably explain it better than me here.
Where I hunt, the only time you see a grouse is when it’s flying, so no way could we ever use a .22. The only critters we use .22’s for is squirrels. All other small game we use a shotgun.
Hello, thanks for the great video. I am thinking about picking up a Stevens 555 in 20 gauge. Have you had any problems with it? Which barrel do you shoot first and why as well as what chokes do you use in the barrels and why? Here in Maine, I am a disabled hunter Maine North Woods Hunter (YouTub) I don't seem to be able to get too many birds because they take off way before I can get to them so I use a 22 a lot. Do you feel the 20 gauge reaches out there far enough for you? All and any information on the gun is greatly appreciated.
No problems so far. Really like it actually since I wasnt a fan of shot guns for birds originally. I run improved modified on the lower and modified on the upper barrel. I shoot lower first. My thinking is the tighter spread for the first shot (for me most are ground shots first) the second shot a bit more open for the wing shot. Also the top barrel for the second shot as slightly more accurate. Really have no complaints so far. Also very light. Hope that helps.
Some people talk smack here about “ground shooting.” Well in a perfect world, it would be nice if the bird decided to get up and fly. Many species just don’t. This includes Quail, chukar, pheasant, grouse, and ptarmigan. When hunting in a densely populated wooded forest such as in the video, making the birds fly by approaching them just doesn’t work 75% of the time. Therefore, ya gotta do what you gotta do and that leads to ground shooting. It’s no different than shooting a rabbit or a raccoon on the ground. The bird decides what’s best for it’s own instinctive preservation and not us humans. If it chooses not to fly away, so be it. I for one am taking the shot and putting it on the dinner table later that evening. I could care less if I took it airborne or running on the ground.
I own a 12 ga. Savage Stevens 555e. Had to personally redo the safety as it hurt my thumb to the point I had to stop hunting. The switch selector does not work. Very cheap design after taking gun apart. It always shoots bottom barrel regardless of selection. Gun dealer told me it would ease with time. Wrong! Poor quality and design.

Well said!

Great feedback. That makes alot of sense

I think the eagles spotted you and were waiting for you to clean the birds and leave the guts behind like the last hunter :P
That's actually a good point.
Do you, if you want to do a hunting video, do it !!!! I enjoyed it and it also keeps things fresh.
Thanks
Fun hunt … good shooting
Good job!
Just picked up this same gun today...What size shot are you running?
I used #5 this season which I know is a little larger than usual but I tried it on a recommendation and I liked it.
Just wondered what they taste like , chicken , quail , pheasant , or buzzard . Never have had a chance to try one.
Like chicken only alittle tougher texture
Thanks , good hunt
3 marks is modified usually.
how did you find your area to hunt?
It's an area that I've used to explore and recreation for years. It just so happens to also have alot of grouse.

Yup that was wolves, not coyotes. Way cool.

Oh wow. So far everything is fine with mine. Time will tell. Granted its no high end shotgun by any means.
You're quite the ground-swatter. Ever shoot 'em on the wing?
Since I just started using shotguns for birds I haven't done alot of shooting on the wing as of yet.
Do also wait until a buck is running away before you take your shot 🤣
Why do you wea are hearing pro
I've gone back and forth with that. Ultimatly I want to save my hearing so I use the hearing pro with the pass through turned on.
Shooting grouse on the ground or in a tree … is not a challenge … too easy I would be impressed if you were to shoot them on the. Wing …
is there anything left wen u blow em up with that big gun lololol
