I actually bothered to calculate how fast Thomas was going based on the shots of Gordon and Thomas going along the bridge. Gordon (his body, not including his tender or coaches) crosses a certain point on the bridge in 200 frames from where we first see him in the scene (some smoke), and Thomas took 51 frames to get his whole body over the same point. If we are to assume Gordon is doing 100mph, Thomas does the same journey as him at a much higher speed. He was doing 294mph.
