For many, religion is a sensitive topic and emotions can run high. This is someone who unfortunately allows their emotion to get in the way of making a good argument.

TH-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of TH-cam comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I feel so bad for that poor man. This is a perfect example of why religious indoctrination is so harmful. Drilling these types of ideas into a person's mind starting from a time where they cannot clearly reason about them on their own is a form of emotional abuse. People who argue Pascal's wager claiming a person has nothing to lose by accepting religion need to take a hard look at this video.
Carl Larson, don’t feel too bad for him. I’ve heard him on other episodes being a total ass-hat and sounding just as sauced.
Thank you for saying this. I'm disappointed that so many comments insult a clearly troubled caller. James may have been emotional at the time for other unknown reasons and the hosts may have even acknowledged this at the end. Anyway, even if his reasoning was illogical, thank you for recognizing the vulnerability of this caller.

@@geezzerboy I said no such thing. I just want such callers to be handled with care and compassion. Being treated with respect can help these callers learn to treat people of other faiths with respect. Hopefully this will help him with his anxiety and fear of those who are different. I think the hosts handled this particular call very well.

It would be so refreshing if someone said, "I have faith in God, but I can't prove his existence." I would have so much more respect for someone who could admit that.
HeWentThattaway That’s equally frustrating, though, because that person still rationalizes the world through a highly problematic lens. It would be like a mathematician saying “I know 3+3=6, but even numbers make me uncomfortable, so I will always say that 3+3=9.” That person can still vote, determine what is taught in schools, decide where your taxes go, etc. I’d rather have more rational people in the world who recognize that a shared, irrational, circular logic can cause tremendous harm to our existence.
Martin was so eloquent, humane, and concise :'-) I miss him a lot. Come back! (Even on a call like this where the caller is just a bumbling braindead buffoon)

Yeah, buddy, I've been hit by a car as well, on a crosswalk. Flew 10 feet over the pavement and came out with the marks of the fender on my hip and thigh, several scrapes, a limp for three weeks and the fright of my life.
It wasn't a guardian angel that saved me, it was the fact that the driver stopped when the car hit me, and that I fell on my side instead of on my head.
None of that made me believe in God or divine intervention. It just made me think people should pay attention to the road when they're behind a wheel.
If there was a guardian angel it would have made the driver notice me before I was hit. It would have saved us all a lot of trouble, and me a lot of pain.
Agree. I was hate-crimed and left for dead. Teeth never the same afterwards. For a hot second god crossed my mind, then nothing. So, amen...
I was hit by a car age 14. It snapped bones in my leg and lead me to miss lots of my education being in hospital. It was the drivers quick thinking and the ambulance and surgeons who helped me, even at 14 I knew that.

Why do Christians imagine nontheists somehow don't know the stories in their magic book? The whole reason I'm an atheist is because I read and studied the thing and realized they were like a malevolent Mother Goose.

This caller talks like my uncle who is mentally held back from getting into spiked drugs and it fried his brain a little. They sound exactly the same.
Atheism upsets you because you should not be intoxicated by one religion. And you should get out there and attend a secular school to make yourself less upset.

Something I've noticed in my life is Christians, moreso than any other religion, have these types of conversations with atheists way more than they talk to Buddhists or Hindu or any other religion. I wonder why that is? It's like they find comfort in the idea that people might not be Christian, but at least they have some kind of religious faith or belief in the supernatural. I don't get that at all.

IS NOT a point that even belongs in any debate that seeks clarity or the closest thing to what is already known to be true. If someone cries out loud that you killed their beloved cat or dog, you will of course ask in defending yourself "Where's the dead cat ?" or "Prove that you owned a cat first when you're done crying out loud or acting out loud."
Freedom of religion also includes not having one.
This guy has had a terrible experience and is offended atheists don't agree with his interpretation of events. And he's had a few. And has come up with the idea that atheists are responsible for his pain. Martin and Russell are being sincere and compassionate as they listen.
