Well, this is a new one. I still enjoyed it, and there are times where I wished I could have a ghost friend to talk with, especially when I felt lonesome.
Bit of a bittersweet story this time. An older Moroccan gentleman had been living on my apartment row when I finished college, god rest his soul, who had lost his wife of fifty years about six months before I moved in. Depressed, sad, and a bit bitter, but he still welcomed me to the building with a nice bottle of scotch. He invited me in and we had a drink together, just chatted about the old days of his and what I want to do about the future. Yet when we talked about marriage, it was a sore subject...especially when he told me his wife passed in the living room we sat in. But we were still good neighbors, and I'd drop in every couple of days to help him out with stuff, throw food on the grill, etc. Where's the ghost, you ask? Well, when he went out to play poker with his friends as is tradition on Saturdays for him and I was cleaning up his kitchen, I swear I felt something else in there, kind of like when you're running from the basement as the lights go out. Yet it wasn't spooky, just...weird. The more and more I was alone in that apartment, the more and more I became affirmed that there was something else, particularly in the living room. So, deciding I didn't have anything to lose, just said, "Your husband is a good man, and he loves you still." When he was finally on his death bed a few years later, I was there with him along with his family. He looked like he was afraid to go...but I swear to god I saw a ghost of a smile (no pun intended) when he whispered the name "Fatima" before he passed. I don't know if her ghost was there, or if it was a dying man's illusions, but I really hope it was the former, and wherever those two are, they are happy.
