- Welcome to the world of Gems Chongtham - a renowned personality from Imphal, Manipur in India. His rock-rap fusion music, silky hair and unmistakable persona have garnered him an established local fanbase, and he performs for them multiple times a day in his hometown. Gems wasn’t always on the road to stardom, however. At a young age he tried becoming a doctor, painter, and even an archer, but the second he hit the stage he knew he wasn’t turning back. Gem's K-pop stylings make him wildly popular with younger audiences in Manipur, where Korean entertainment has become the main source of inspiration after an almost 20 year-long ban on Bollywood in the state.

I’m from northeast Manipur but parent only think for their child for jobs and to settle that the logic there might be some who r supportive

I know that most of the people here won't bother to read this knowledge oriented comment but this is for the people those who are raising their eyebrows with the topic-'why his father is speaking in bengali?'. Let me answer: The interviewer or the journalist must be non manipuri, and this documentary is not solely for Manipur state, but it is also for the other non-local viewers. Prolly, his father couldn't speak hindi therefore he tried to communicate in bengali since this was the only another Indian language which he could speak. Now, the another question, "How could he speak bengali and not hindi?" well, there is a bit of link between Manipuris and bengalis in the history of Manipur. Not going deep in the history, but in short, during the kingship in Manipur, bengali script and the language flourished with the arrival of bengalis in manipur back then. Eversince, bengali language and script are widely being used among manipuris. Important note: We manipuris have our own language and script. Language is called 'meiteilon' and albhabets are called 'meitei mayek'. Most meiteis are hindu because of the conversion in the history centuries ago. We have our own religion called "Sanamahi" or "Sanamahism".

I'm from Manipur, Northeast India. Back in 2003, I went to JNV Rajgir in Bihar as a student exchange. They were shocked seeing how low our trousers were. That time, most mainland Indians wore their pants almost upto their belly button! NE India is way ahead in this game and rappers were famous in Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram since the early 00s.

m kind of proud tht they spoke in 3 languages hindi english bengali n even bits of manipuri at the start ...everybody cn speak their own regional language...the point of communicating in other standard language as to say is keeping the standard ...for the national and global viewers ...its a better outlook tht they hav made cus mainland india think NE states are backward kinda 😒😒😒 at the same time i felt sad cus sm of us r not proud of our language ...its a contradictory feeling ...we hv been ruled out by the wise ...n hs dominated the world

I'm a Manipuri living in Manipur and I have never heard of Gems Chongtham until I saw this video. This guy obviously has some fan following but Vice really needs some homework to do about Manipuri artists on TH-cam before declaring anyone as a "sensation."

Now a days we know that many younger singer Came over n too over him but one thing I appreciate VICE is you didn't look for sudden success TH-camr but someone senior TH-camr.
Since our country India has now have good access to internet connection in cheaper price compare to before post Jio revolution where we needed to buy 100 rupee or more for internet pack so we didn't spend too much watching on TH-cam but rather facebook and watsapp.
Plus So many younger viewer may not know him or heard his song but I love it.and can understand by environment he has created seems famous +contract he got for movies etc and by the look at his audience, his audience now must be "quite"older people who are now "quiet "and the commenters seems younger people.
