  • Motor Yacht Blade docking in Bonifacio, with winds exceeding 25 knots on the beam. 3 dock master boats push from the starboard side, they drop their port anchor and start manoeuvring into the berth.
Great team effort and a safe dockage.
Captain Tristan Mortlock is an award winning Super Yacht Captain with over 15 years experience. He started his yachting career in his teens and now runs one of the most successful charter yachts in the world. Tristan is currently serving on Motor Yacht AWOL, a San Lorenzo SD122, built in 2009. AWOL is a multi award winning yacht and her crew take a lot of pride in their work.
Captain's Vlog is about educating interested parties on what happens onboard a Mega Yacht, Super Yacht and the yachting industry. To share the life of yacht crew and life at sea. The BIG shipyard refits, paint jobs and marine engineering works. To travel some of the worlds most beautiful destinations.
The first owner of the Super Yacht AWOL was non other than Mr Piero Ferrari himself. The wheel house still contains the original Captain's chair with the Ferrari emblem.

I have a Sealine SC35. I know how the wind is a big factor, on approaching our Jetty, we were stationary as I checked the bow thruster and forward and reverse for both engines. The wind got me the bow was blown to starboard, I applied bow thrusters but with no affect I had to do a 360 and start again. I have just found your youtube channel and get engrossed in your vids and really appreciate the quality of your channel. Thank you

@SYC: You hit the nail on the head with the phrase "momentum". If you let it stall it goes sideways like a rocket and to cure that you have to go forwards or astern. Usually at that point you don't have the room to make those sort of manoeuvres!
Just one thought, only from my own Med experience on 12m yacht mooring, if you come in at that angle to the dropped anchor and let the anchor cable tighten doesn't it ping the bow to the anchor (port in that case) and conversely flick (if you can "flick" 40 tonnes?)' the stern to starboard? I know there's numerous pivot points depending on where the "energy" is put into the vessel.
Great videos of life in larger vessels. I'll stick to the Solent - damn it's still raining here....

Thank god Blade wasn't captained by this one youtuber captain, what was his name again? I'm just kidding mate! Boats can be polished, the ego on the other hand... Willing to share a bit of "sailor's yarn"; wen't out with a lady friend on a brezzy day (first mistake; I felt pressured). When we got back in the harbour I was cought by a breeze and instead of mooring "roman-cathlic" I came along sideways. Ran forward to the mooring-lines (this obviously could take some time on a 80 footer - this is were the story drifts towards the sailor's yarn; actually it's just a 60 footer), didn't have my gloves on; tried to push the bow away from the dock; another breeze cought the bow; had no chance; cut my hands open. Marineros finally pushed the bow away from the dock; tidied up. Everybody was watching. Didn't moor my lady friend "roman cathlic" either.

Was very impressed with the way the capt of Blade stuck to his plan and reversed in with plenty of momentum . It would have been super tempting to back off too soon to not hit the dock but he would have slide straight into AWOL only half in his spot!. Also very smart to drop his anchor up wind temporarily to help with control of the bow. He has obviously dealt with this nightmare of a yacht to maneuver before!
    Cheers Warren

Long ago I saw a veteran long-keel yacht, about 50ft, turn into the very tight Groves & Gutteridge marina in Cowes in a howling wind. At the wheel was a rather old man, jn his 80s and hunched over with arthritis. On the bow was an equally old woman. Despite the wind, and watched by numerous anxious bystanders, he steadily gunned the engine in ahead, then spun the wheel, then gunned in astern, etc. etc. and the vessel, with its very long bowsprit, gentle rotated and elegantly moved into the berth. All the time the wjnd was howling and gusting, making all the halyards clack clack against the masts. As it came to a stop, still not touching the pontoon, the woman politely passed the bow mooring warp to someone on the dock. Gobsmacking.

Nice bit of docking by all involved. Why aren’t there any whitecaps on the water at 20-25 knots? We get them here beginning to form at 15 knots and like a field of cotton over 20 knots.

Seems like they'd have something similar to a drop keel or daggerboard to just put down for mooring in windy places like that. Either way though, great job to the captain and thanks for posting.

How do you retrieve the port anchor after docking (which the commentary implies you do)? If you don’t, how does another vessel to starboard depart before the yacht “Blade”? I assume “Blade” dips the chain after docking and raises the anchor on departing?
