I've ridden a number of the BC Ferries between Horseshoe Bay and Nanaimo, and while I understand they are not the same, they share a lot of similarities. The glimpses of the detail and weathering you've applied are exactly what I remember. I'm now going to sit here and reminisce of many fond memories of our vacations on Vancouver Island. Incredible work! Thanks for sharing. =)
They are indeed similar to the Bennet era B.C. Ferries. I grew up riding the Queen of Nanaimo on route 2 from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo when I was a kid in the seventies. Same cranes, lifeboats, style, etc. Thanks for sharing!

The fastest 38 minutes of my day! (Well, hour and a quarter, because I'll be watching it a second time later this afternoon,,,) Again, you've answered questions I've had in my head on how to build and brace open upperworks on my icebreaker. Sometimes, it's the simplest things that I overlook, like swapping out for a new blade when it starts to drag as I follow a drafted line. And I've got well over 100, so there's no excuse for not swapping. Thanks again!

It really is using engineering drawings and building methods (welding plate) in miniature, and that will give the best result. Thank you. I sort of knew I was in for the long haul. Everything about it feels right and I have zero anxiety about it . . . well I do have my moments, but it all feels pretty good. Imagine the sheer weight of all the coats of paint on this ship after each refit. Lol . . . apparently the HMS Hood had 200 tons of paint at the end of her career . . . imagine that. ;-)
Top work as always. Interesting you talk about the rigidity of the model as you start to glue it together, and that you didn't need to use ply to do that like your buildings as I think you have mentioned in past videos. But I guess large slab sides will warp more than something like this with lots of rubbing etc.
I use a lazy Susan for airbrushing but never thought of it for building too. Will upgrade based on what you said. I also bought what I think is your pencil sharpener from Amazon (Excel blades too). Thanks.
The alternate for the turn table is to go to a wood working house and get a metal turn table bearnig set up. They come from about 6 inches round to over 24 inches round. They are not very much money. I have made several for friends and have one for my use. I use clothes pins for clamping these things as they are very cheep and you can turn the wood around and get a long clamp out of them. These are the things that our Moms used to clamp the wet clothes on to the wire drying racks outside before electric dryers were invented. Yes, I'm old!!!
What adhesive are u using for the “welds”? Thanks boomer for sharing all this with us. excellent work. I just started making practice 6x6 terrains, almost like terrain swatches, and last night made my first fence and it looks awesome. And was my first time using styrene and bass wood.
Fantastic build!! I love all of the intricacies. A lot of your techniques are simple but the kind where you slap your forehead and say “Why didn’t I think of that?!”. That pencil sharpener is an Eisen aluminum sharpener with extra blade. Cost is about $2 USD.

In the past I coated all of the wood parts with 2 coats of Crystal Clear acrylic lacquer to seal them followed by a cleaning with steel wool. Do you think I would get the same or better results using Varathane Spar Urethane?
2 or 3 years ago i commented to a Japanese Modeller that we're going to have to start detailing the INSIDE of Tunnels etc. , Due to the advent of Cameras on train tracks today . He'd built a set of 3 Rail Ferrys that pulled up to a dock , transfered the rolling stock , then "Sailed" Around on the flat plywood ... So YES ~ Inside Detaling is a future MUST for those who think that Hyper-detailing is the focus of model Trains 👌
I am learning so much. I wanted to ask you if you could do a video about the jig you used for the superstructure? I watched this video several times to glean what I could see about the jig you made. Thanks Boomer, this series rocks!
The jig is just a piece of scrap plywood. Then I used a jigsaw to cut it out. Nothing fancy, just to get the job done. The one power tool I use the most is a jig saw - then a small table saw.
Those sanding blocks and their unlimited uses! ;) Thanks for the cutting tips, how many blades would you go through on a build project like this? As always, love your work :)

Amazing as usual. If I understand, the header I-beams underneath the deck are only on one side of the corner gussets or did you add some on the other side (not shown in the video) to sandwich them? I know not very important but just curious as to how the barge was constructed.

Love these videos boomer,you draw me in every week and it complele's me to build something (a produce warehouse for my future layout) but I currently don't have the space to store it or have a Time frame as to when construction of my future layout will start.. with that being said I do have a question on the ferry build you're working on...Is the upper part of the ferry going to be removable If a derailment should happen inside the ferry??
No. You will never get the structure to blend properly with the deck etc if you do that. I don't need to anyway. It's easy to reach in and re-rail, clean track, etc. The car garage is not that long really. I designed the Ferry for the smaller shelf layout design. I only need 11 car capacity not 22 which is why I only built half of the boat.
@@boomerdiorama hi Boomer. Yes. It is being built by Peter Lloyd-Lees. He has a TH-cam channel (mpeterll) and the layout build is the “Sydney Project”. It is rather big and definitely not a shelf layout lol.

Boomer, Your moving at the speed of light while the rest of us are still stuck on the couch! I alway's use a 4h pencil it keeps a sharp point longer and a good pencil sharpener is not valued enough. I wish I knew. She was quite busy though. She is retired now as of 2017 I believe. She was last seen tied up and rusting away in Port Melon, B.C. near the Sechelt Peninsula. Seaspan has some other carriers that have eclipsed here operations. I am glad I chose to model part of her now. ;-)

Dusty is seven. Sorry to hear about your cat. I know what that feels like and it is never easy. Best thing to do is get another kitten or adopt one that needs love. Cats need good homes.
Cutting polystyrene with the laser cutter is not the best idea. The material is solded together again after the laserbeam has passed. Better use a milling maching for this material. Lasermachines are not always the best machine to do a job.It's the same with 3D printers, you can do many things with them but sometimes it is nonsens to use them.
I use thin Tamiya tape. Wrap it around the whole pipe or square so the tape lines up even. Then scribe or cut into each corner of the square, or gently roll the tube with the knife along the tape line. Then I use a sanding stick to tweak it up square.
Ha! You're not fooling me! You photoshopped a picture of the real thing with your layout behind it, didn't you? Actually, I had to stop the video and really study that section where you showed the "finished" inside. I'm still not quite sure...
You build like perfection... You could sell your builds.. I would sure buy this... I'm looking for one but I do believe I can't build it ... Especially the way you do

G'day Mate. Real good advice, thank you. Could you tell me what the glue is that you use please? The stuff I use is in Japanese and it isn't real good.
I use Plastruct Solvent (Orange Label) by Plastruct. You can probably use any type of solvent (including MEK) if you can stand the odor. I find Plastruct to be the least offensive odor.

Plastic is great to work with but you have to watch it does not deflect or run out of control. Plywood works great if you don't see it.
Carrier Princess built in 1973 for Canadian Pacific. I had to look it up good stuff, astounding the number and variety of vessels they built.
Canadian Pacific has become a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the railroads in North America. ;-)

The alternate for the turn table is to go to a wood working house and get a metal turn table bearnig set up. They come from about 6 inches round to over 24 inches round. They are not very much money. I have made several for friends and have one for my use. I use clothes pins for clamping these things as they are very cheep and you can turn the wood around and get a long clamp out of them. These are the things that our Moms used to clamp the wet clothes on to the wire drying racks outside before electric dryers were invented. Yes, I'm old!!!

I just started making practice 6x6 terrains, almost like terrain swatches, and last night made my first fence and it looks awesome. And was my first time using styrene and bass wood.
I use generally use Solvent by Plastruct or Tamiya.
Fantastic build!! I love all of the intricacies. A lot of your techniques are simple but the kind where you slap your forehead and say “Why didn’t I think of that?!”. That pencil sharpener is an Eisen aluminum sharpener with extra blade. Cost is about $2 USD.

In the past I coated all of the wood parts with 2 coats of Crystal Clear acrylic lacquer to seal them followed by a cleaning with steel wool. Do you think I would get the same or better results using Varathane Spar Urethane?

2 or 3 years ago i commented to a Japanese Modeller that we're going to have to start detailing the INSIDE of Tunnels etc. , Due to the advent of Cameras on train tracks today .
He'd built a set of 3 Rail Ferrys that pulled up to a dock , transfered the rolling stock , then "Sailed" Around on the flat plywood ...
So YES ~ Inside Detaling is a future MUST for those who think that Hyper-detailing is the focus of model Trains 👌

I am learning so much. I wanted to ask you if you could do a video about the jig you used for the superstructure? I watched this video several times to glean what I could see about the jig you made. Thanks Boomer, this series rocks!
The jig is just a piece of scrap plywood. Then I used a jigsaw to cut it out. Nothing fancy, just to get the job done. The one power tool I use the most is a jig saw - then a small table saw.
Those sanding blocks and their unlimited uses! ;) Thanks for the cutting tips, how many blades would you go through on a build project like this? As always, love your work :)
Probably 30 - 40 blades. Then I recycle them for carving shapes etc.
Boomer, what do you use to hold your jigs together with?
Is it a wood glue or does the Plastruc cement work on wood?

Wood glue. Sometimes I use Super Glue (CA) as well.
Amazing as usual. If I understand, the header I-beams underneath the deck are only on one side of the corner gussets or did you add some on the other side (not shown in the video) to sandwich them? I know not very important but just curious as to how the barge was constructed.

Love these videos boomer,you draw me in every week and it complele's me to build something (a produce warehouse for my future layout) but I currently don't have the space to store it or have a Time frame as to when construction of my future layout will start.. with that being said I do have a question on the ferry build you're working on...Is the upper part of the ferry going to be removable If a derailment should happen inside the ferry??
No. You will never get the structure to blend properly with the deck etc if you do that. I don't need to anyway. It's easy to reach in and re-rail, clean track, etc. The car garage is not that long really. I designed the Ferry for the smaller shelf layout design. I only need 11 car capacity not 22 which is why I only built half of the boat.

@@boomerdiorama hi Boomer. Yes. It is being built by Peter Lloyd-Lees. He has a TH-cam channel (mpeterll) and the layout build is the “Sydney Project”. It is rather big and definitely not a shelf layout lol.

Boomer, Your moving at the speed of light while the rest of us are still stuck on the couch! I alway's use a 4h pencil it keeps a sharp point longer and a good pencil sharpener is not valued enough. I wish I knew. She was quite busy though. She is retired now as of 2017 I believe. She was last seen tied up and rusting away in Port Melon, B.C. near the Sechelt Peninsula. Seaspan has some other carriers that have eclipsed here operations. I am glad I chose to model part of her now. ;-)

Cutting polystyrene with the laser cutter is not the best idea. The material is solded together again after the laserbeam has passed. Better use a milling maching for this material.
Lasermachines are not always the best machine to do a job.It's the same with 3D printers, you can do many things with them but sometimes it is nonsens to use them.
3D printers have their place in the hobby for sure, but I don't need one. I can build "one-off" parts faster than a 3D printer anyway. ;-)
Cut a 4 foot drywall buttjoint with that blade ? And it's dunno ! Haha 😂

Boomer what is the best way to cut tubing , round or square
I use thin Tamiya tape. Wrap it around the whole pipe or square so the tape lines up even. Then scribe or cut into each corner of the square, or gently roll the tube with the knife along the tape line. Then I use a sanding stick to tweak it up square.

G'day Mate. Real good advice, thank you. Could you tell me what the glue is that you use please? The stuff I use is in Japanese and it isn't real good.
I use Plastruct Solvent (Orange Label) by Plastruct. You can probably use any type of solvent (including MEK) if you can stand the odor. I find Plastruct to be the least offensive odor.
