By far my favorite chess youtuber- everything gets explained at a nice and slow pace and there's none of that arrogance you see on other channels. I especially love it when Nelson goes: "there's a line here, but I can't remember, I think I am gonnna playyy...."
This one is tied with Gotham for me, Gotham is more smarmy and quirky, but his charm comes from that arrogant vibe. Because we know that ultimately he’s actually a humble and caring guy who did have a career in being a teacher in chess. So it’s all a bit of an inside reference there. Levy truly is fantastic. But Nelson goes more in depth on the simplicity, Gotham is primarily talking to higher level players about higher level chess, but dumbs it down so that low level players can follow along.
Agreed! Seeing and hearing the thought process is very beneficial. The "others" 😉 assume the viewer knows certain facts, principles, and lines without ever explaining. This here is a basic start to finish how to and why. Great channel!❤
I truly appreciate the effort you put into creating such detailed and informative content that explains each chess move from a beginner's perspective. Your videos are exactly what I've been looking for! 👏
I'm shocked at how long the 10 minutes he talks and plays. One time I got up to drink a glass of water during a game, came back and found that I was flagged
I made a decent personal gain with the simple mantra "when you find a good move, always look for a better one" and since im awful it really slowed me down and elevated my game
For the first 100 games you play, try to play with basic principles in mind. Develop your pieces, king safety, looking for tactics, checks captures attacks. After 100 games played, review your game and try to see if you can recognize patterns or typical mistakes that opponents in your elo make, even if you fell for them. Consciously reviewing your games will actually lead to clear improvements in your next games because the patterns will be recognizable to you. This will continue until you inevitably come across new patterns that you're unfamiliar with. Also try to do as many puzzles as you can when you have bad streaks. And last but not least, NEVER take it personally if you lose. Every single game played, even the ones that make you rage and feel like your brain is incapable of processing a simple thought are merely adding to your deep reservoire of patterns that you can recognize in chess.
You know it's very easy to get this sort of mentality that you don't need these sort of basic instructive videos, especially when you watch a lot of GM games and all that, but honestly I can find myself making things for too elaborate and this is a reminder to get my fundamentals before trying to run a marathon.
I saw that you also appreciate opponents who don't have a very good game. I saw that you know how to lose. You are an example of modesty. RESPECT! Thanks from Romania.
truly an amazing moment at 20:37 His opponent pinned the bishop to the queen using a rook, but Nelson still moved the bishop away, allowing his opponent to take his queen. I actually didnt think the 400 elo player will see and play the bishop-queen pin, but good for him for spotting it. If he is only 400 elo and can notice a pin like that, then he has a bright future in chess, now he will surely capture the hanging queen *PAWN C5!!!* *HANGS BOTH ROOKS IN 2 MOVES*
As a Colle player at the 500-ish level, this was great to see! I run into these scenarios every game I play, and it’s 90% why I started playing semi-Slavs and Colles - they’re super solid defenses against hyper-aggressive opponents whose game plans seem to be either “spam the queen” or “never stop attacking ever.”
@jmgerraughty As a 500 player. I would ignore playing systems. Took me about 2 weeks to get to about 700-800 elo (I got stuck there for ages though). Better to play other people's mistakes, about 1 in 3 moves you can punish. Bump the time format up to 30 minutes and you'll see what I mean. Go back down to blitz when you're faster at calculating.
I loved your old rating climb series - although I never finished it because I stopped when you got to a level that's above my own - so I'm very glad you started a new one. The old one helped me a lot, maybe it's time I revisit it since my rating is now higher than it was when I first watched it. I'll be following this one very closely :D
I was just thinking this... If I watched this a few months ago I would have had no idea what half of it meant. I have just found this channel and like it a lot!
Rating climbs are easily my favorite videos. I appreciate the refreshers and reminders and being able to SEE your thoughts and plays over and over. Thanks!
I love this channel. Thank you so much I’ve started to play much better and especially at these low levels I’m even seeing the advanced moves prior to you acknowledging them in the video. I played chess as a kid but never knew what I was really doing. You’ve single-handedly made me a much better player and now I play every day. Kudos! Keep up the great work.
Dude you are a great teacher! I've watched tons of chess videos but you are far and a way the best at explaining the rationale and strategy behind each move, which is very helpful for a beginner
At 45:24 i think bishop e7+ was better because if queen takes knight takes putting you up more material and if the run the king to g6 you have nh4 double check kh5 and Qg5#
Bro YES I’m gonna be looking forward to Mondays for the first time in my life lol. Your first rapid rating climb series took me from 400 to 800 ELO. Laughably low digits compared to some but I’m in my 30s and new to chess, so I’m very proud of that progress. In my opinion, yours is the most educational rating climb on the internet, and entertaining as hell too. I’m pumped youre doing it again. Thanks for all the amazing content man
I learned a lot with the last rapid rating climb, so I'm excited to see it back! One thing I would love to see you discuss or explain is building a good position when a game is more positional in style. What are the sorts of things you see on the board that help you decide how to build up your position.
I started chess about a 2 months ago. And ive been hovering around 400 elo. These tips help. I see myself picking one move. Thinking im right. Then you go ahead and show me something different. Very informative
These rating climb videos are actually so helpful to understand the thinking process of better players and bringing me closer to my goal of 2000. Even an intermediate player like me can learn a lot from these games when you explain every move you make. Thanks a lot for doing this! Can't wait for more!
These are great! Three games with a quick review between feels about the right length. Educational even for someone (like myself) who has been playing for over 50 years.
At 9:15 wasn’t bishop takes knight a solid idea? After rook takes, Queen c7 check forces the king back and then you pick up the rook with check and then they have to block with the bishop and you just take it for mate? Basically forced mate IF they take the knight and if they don’t then that’s okay worth a shot and it’s still a free knight.
I'm a very new chess player and your videos have already helped me so much!! I've gone from literally 100 elo to 360 in the last two weeks since I started learning. Thank you so much for the material and content you provide. You're an excellent teacher!
glad to see the Rating Climb back Nelson thank you! I had a question. Since blunders are pretty common at this lower rating range, could you show us a game where u intentionally blunder a piece and then try to comeback and win? I think that might be very instructive to newer players.
Nelson, you’re amazing! When I first started watching your videos, I didn’t really understand what was going on and your moves and tactics seemed like magic. Now, I’m more times than not able to predict what move you will play within just a couple of seconds. Thanks for the fantastic education! 🙏🏼
I love your videos man, your respect for opponents and joy for the game is really nice to see and your explanations are crystal clear even for a beginner like me. Thank you.
This comes at a good time. I recently finished watching Peter Patzer climb rapid, it's been making chess comprehensible and fun. Maybe AverageJoe will learn to manage his time by the end.
This video is awesome. Thanks so much for your fantastic teaching style. I’ve always been interested kn chess, but have zero knowledge of actual theory/strategy. I recently started watching Magnus/Hikamaru vids out of interest, but the commentary is so advanced. You broke it down in such a simple way to help me understand the fundamental strategy. Definitely subscribed. Thank you!!
Black didn't develop his pieces because he brought his queen out too early. White developed quickly by attacking the queen while developing his pieces. Black was constantly having to move the queen out of danger, which prevented development.
I haven't learned chess because it always seemed to be too complicated to comprehend. I'm glad that I found this tutorial. Your explanations make so much sense and I'm finally learning. Thank you!
6:39 What about Knight c3-d5? Threatening the queen and a fork on c7 ? Disadvantage is of course giving up at least two tempo for a material gain. So you delayed it one move because of the quality of the opponent.
Man after watching this video, I slayed today! I was playing differently and thinking totally differently. Or at least it seems like it. Tomorrow could be another story. I'm pretty new
5:46 - Snatching the c7 pawn which is hanging also seems a good possibility. (Edit) Later you mention it and decide that it is OK but castling is better. The later forking of the Queen pretty much puts a mere pawn snatch in the shade.
Amazing, I've been binging your last speed run recently, I'm so happy you're doing another run. These videos are great, I've learned so much from watching you.
First off, Thank you very much for being a clarion chesser! 5:44 Bishop threatened by Black's Q and you develop with a Q battery for castling. Why not take the pawn and proceed with a free pawn? You glossed over this option and this is so easy and free, so why? I guess this is for teaching the development steps first concept video.
At 6:55 is it a bad idea to get the Bishop from behind, up and threat blacks King right away? If Black move the king it is in danger out there. If black defend with Bishop, our is defended with the horse,, then white can take that other black pawn out with whites other Bishop, and then whites front pawn is ready to move up?
I am so happy to see another one of these series, I have honestly learned so much from you! I had the hardest time breaking 1000 but now I am almost 1200! I credit you for almost all my wins now!
@45:39 black takes knight, checkmate in one had you moved f3 knight to h4 instead of queen d3 to e3, take pawn on f5 checkmate. Or go the lonnng way around like what ultimately happened. I was shouting to move knight instead of queen.
i have an idea i think would potentially be good for playback mode or practice mode. if a square is attackable by white put one or more little green dots in the upper left corner of the square. if it is attackable by black put one or more little red dots in the upper left corner. for secondary knight moves do a lighter shade of the colors. maybe even do a tertiary for the knights with even lighter colors but that might be too cluttered. these dots might help over time to access what is going by both sides when moves are made.
So stoked to have found your channel, I think I must have subbed one time for every game you went through 😂 So calm and collected, finding the time to tutor us in a very logical and clear way while playing live chess. 👌
Very nicely explained, without rush, without speaking fast, which is tiring. Good video. Congrats and thanks on behalf of all average players (though not even that really). Let's say average amateurs.
I suggest you try new different kinda advanced openings like Blackmar-Diemer-Gambit and stick to it for a while trying to explain as much ideas as possible! Because you have played the regular basic openings alot in the previous rating climb That would be really fun and useful!

Oh my god!
Yay!

thanks, Nelson!

I was jsut thinking that. Gotham has too much energyy, Hikaru is just too smart. Some other players are just trying too hard to be funny.

Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
When you talk us through the moves it seems so obvious. Then I try to do it alone and it’s a disaster…..lol
I'm shocked at how long the 10 minutes he talks and plays.
One time I got up to drink a glass of water during a game, came back and found that I was flagged
For real though
I made a decent personal gain with the simple mantra "when you find a good move, always look for a better one" and since im awful it really slowed me down and elevated my game

I've been losing a lot recently. I just played some 1500s, went all "Nelson" and explained my moves every time I made one, just won 4 in a row.
I saw that you also appreciate opponents who don't have a very good game. I saw that you know how to lose. You are an example of modesty. RESPECT! Thanks from Romania.

I was looking forward to seeing the Colle System in action and then your opponent was like 'what if I kamikaze all my pieces into it?'
great point...seems to happen to me a lot...I wanna try out a new system, but the opponent makes bad moves and wrecks my plan LOL
@GunNut37086 If they make bad moves it shouldn't ruin your plans it should give you good options.
As a Colle player at the 500-ish level, this was great to see! I love how people are below 1000 discuss openings😶😂 I'm 1700 and even now I barely ever discuss openings lol
17:16 lmao idk why it's so funny nelson is like thinking everything and stuff and the opponent is like uga buga baby memes
Lmao
Hahahahaha yeah !
Your explanations about which diagonal to put your bishop on are super helpful, when you go over the pros/cons of each square.

Great to see the rating climb return too, I’m stoked for a new run!!
To be honest I learned more from the last rating climb than I did from any other videos so I am so glad to see it again.
YES!!! A new speed run from Nelson! I'm so happy!
Also, thank you for changing the board colour! So helpful for those of us that are colourblind!
Not a speedrun, just a normal rating climb
@@Lonica2 and the difference is important?
@@chriselcombe847 not really, but a speedrun means racing for a time, this is slow and steady
@@Lonica2 they're the same thing really, unless you think that Nelson isn't trying to get there in as few games as possible.

Fabulous that you're doing a " run again " ! I'm sure I can learn plenty 😀

Now I’m battling in 1400’s 😢
You’re awesome Nelson! I loved your Peter-Patzer climb. Probably watched it all the way through 3 times. So pumped you brought it back
I love your videos man, your respect for opponents and joy for the game is really nice to see and your explanations are crystal clear even for a beginner like me. Thank you.
yesssss, i've been rewatching the peter patzer rating climb over and over, so keen to get more of this!
This comes at a good time. I recently finished watching Peter Patzer climb rapid, it's been making chess comprehensible and fun. Maybe AverageJoe will learn to manage his time by the end.

Black didn't develop his pieces because he brought his queen out too early. White developed quickly by attacking the queen while developing his pieces. Black was constantly having to move the queen out of danger, which prevented development.
At 44:07 , you could have made your knight to b7, that will be a check by your bishop and then you could capture the queen to buy the same knight.
He saw that but judged a potential check mate more valuable.
43:29 - Why on Earth do you not just take the rook with your knight? The discovered check keeps you from losing the knight.
You're such a good teacher! I am so grateful to have found this channel. Thank you.
Nelson. You know I think you are great, I recommend following E Rosen who is well into his climb-undefeated, now at close to 1900
opponent at 25:30 was doing the kings Indian attack opening
your way of thinking and analyz while you play is so easy and advanced in the same time. Keep going dude :)
I haven't learned chess because it always seemed to be too complicated to comprehend. I'm glad that I found this tutorial. Your explanations make so much sense and I'm finally learning. Thank you!
I really love the way you explain everything, and also give us time to think about what a good move should be.
Love it, Nelson! Just finished watching your first rapid climb for the second time! Perfect timing! Love your rapid practice games too! Cheers.
6:39 What about Knight c3-d5? Threatening the queen and a fork on c7 ? Disadvantage is of course giving up at least two tempo for a material gain.

These are the best ladder climb videos I've personally watched. The analysis of your thought process is truly educational

Came here looking for this, wasn't sure if it was missed or there was some problem with the move. Seemed like a free pawn back.
WoW! This is like a masterclass.. Excellent!
Happy to see this series starting again. I still go back and rewatch the old ones. Thank you Nelson!
This was the most useful series for me even out of all the other people who did a rating climb. Excited for it again
This man is playing a live game thats timed while his explaining it at the same time. Thats impressive!
Amazing, I've been binging your last speed run recently, I'm so happy you're doing another run. These videos are great, I've learned so much from watching you.
I was looking forward for this series again. Thanks Nelson!
I jumped the gun in my questions, Nelson does show humility like a SAINT! He is like Captain Nelson, the ways he maneuvers on the checkered sea.
21:18 come on Nelson. It’s mate in two. Rook to check, d2, then queen to check mate, b4
This is really great to learn how to play chess correctly! Love it
Love your videos, i just crawled back to 1300 after a hard fall. Prolly woulda never got back into it if not for your videos ❤
Ah man you are a legend!!

17:00 nd4 is a beautiful move here
Will order the 1,001 brilliant ways to checkmate. THX for the great instruction. Good teachers simplify. And you're good at it.
Wow, as a noob I loved the explanations of what you're thinking.
@45:39 black takes knight, checkmate in one had you moved f3 knight to h4 instead of queen d3 to e3, take pawn on f5 checkmate. Or go the lonnng way around like what ultimately happened. I was shouting to move knight instead of queen.
8:10 i found that pin with a follow-up royal fork, because I've seen it before in a game of mine. I managed to find it on my own once
nice! Been waiting for this
Wow igigig8 from Brazil coming strong with the 78% accuracy performance!! Good game to them!!
Well presented, easier to follow than some others. Thank you!
This is awesome, you're explaining everything so clearly here!

So excited for another rating club series!!!
I really enjoyed this video! Your thought process is so smooth.
i have an idea i think would potentially be good for playback mode or practice mode. if a square is attackable by white put one or more little green dots in the upper left corner of the square. if it is attackable by black put one or more little red dots in the upper left corner. for secondary knight moves do a lighter shade of the colors. maybe even do a tertiary for the knights with even lighter colors but that might be too cluttered. these dots might help over time to access what is going by both sides when moves are made.
You need to be able to see that without, that’s the point of getting better at knowing what to look for
Hella dope vidja yo!! Gotta follow this expeditious elo climb.
I love the fact you explain concept while you play real game
Thank you for creating this channel. Your breakdown of your thoughts about the moves has helped me a lot.

Very nicely explained, without rush, without speaking fast, which is tiring. Good video. Congrats and thanks on behalf of all average players (though not even that really). Let's say average amateurs.
The opponent at 10:49 was named bhataktahuaatma - broken down as "bhatakta hua atma" - a wandering soul!
Nice video, d5 as your last move was mate as well. I would have played the queen move but I paused the video while my wife was talking and saw it.
I suggest you try new different kinda advanced openings like Blackmar-Diemer-Gambit and stick to it for a while trying to explain as much ideas as possible!
Because you have played the regular basic openings alot in the previous rating climb
That would be really fun and useful!
I like how you include the advanced tactics too👍
Love your rating climbs!
please keep with this type of content. It helps a lot a begginer like me and the others to get better in chess
Nice videos Nelson!
at 31:41 if you follow that idea Qb6+ Be3 Nxe3, white has mate in 2 by moving Qd7+ and then Qf7#
of course you could take the bishop with the queen instead, but just to show how can one mistake, even when far ahead, can lose you the game
This was great. As a sub 500 I’m making the same mistakes your opponents are making and this is telling me why.
I'm also happy to see the announcement of another ratings climb. I loved the last series and learned so much
