Gus, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences in comb honey. I really appreciate the extra time it takes to video all the steps. There was more to know than I imagined. I'm sure this series will greatly shorten my learning curve. Thank you so much!
Gus, this was full of very helpful information! Thank you very much for sharing! We have some shallow supers that we haven’t been using and this is a perfect solution.
Gus thank you for some great ideas. Terrific video!! I use a turkey baster from the $ tree for welding the wax. Keep the wax hot. Will last for my 10 frames. Then I dispose.
Great video! Lots of information and tips i will put to use this season. First time trying to produce comb honey, going to try it in medium frames because that's what i already have
Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this journey. I’m going to try my hand at comb honey this year,or next, and you’ve definitely helped out a lot.
For pouring beeswax: look up Richard Noel's videos "The right equipment is essential. Get organised!!" at the 16:15 mark. He shows a small device called a burette (a double walled container that uses warm water to heat the wax). Looks a lot simpler to use and less prone to being clogged (saw other videos where he uses one: "Cold and sunny : making eeks in the workshop." at the 3:22 mark).
This video is game changing! I sell a good amount of comb honey and after watching your video I'm going to change to shallows. I don't think I'll mark them with an "S" though, lol.
My Amish neighbors and myself used to buy a lot of jars and syrup from Mr. Hodum. He’s a wealth of knowledge! The S for stupid story sounds exactly like him lol!
You are not the only guy with an s on boxes. I usually don't run full supers of comb honey. I just put a couple of frames per super on my strongest hives. My market for comb honey a little weak. I started producing it for my personal use. I ended up with a lot of shallow supers with drawn comb. There a lot easier for older beekeepers.
You did a great presentation on preparing your frames for comb production. I just subscribed hoping to see if you have a presentation on how to set up your hive for comb honey production. When I'm done with the video I'll search your library for the set up procedure. I haven't done comb honey for a couple of years. I've used the Juniper Hill Split to prep my hives for production. Where I live splitting hives and rebuilding to the flows won't work. I'm in the north and it just won't work for me, so I do the Juniper Hill Split.
Wow this is odd that this video came back up today . I have all my comb supers ready for the bee season BUT I am going to add more supers. I have had a question I was going to ask you so now is the best time. When you put your comb supers on do you run more than one in each hive and do you install them on top of your brood box or on top of your honey supers or on the very top of all your honey supers?? . Was also going to say I run full thin sheets of foundation an my bottom bar is the open slot so the foundation can just hang lose at the bottom. Thank you very much for all your time an video’s you do . THANKS
1.-no 2.-over 1 super they’ve filled 3.-yes it should hang freely through the slot. If you’re at hive life this year holler at me, thanks for watching!
Hey Gus! Great video and info! I wonder if I can just make some thin wax starter strips from my own wax for the comb honey frames. Do you think the bees will work them ok or make a mess without embossing them? Any suggestions for a good embosser roller set? Thanks! -Serge
I will be trying my hand at comb honey this year. I am still trying to decide whether I want to do Ross Rounds or straight from the frame. I'd love any and all input before I get started!
Kenneth Taylor DeSoto Illinois, I use a 25 gal metal Barrel cut end put on concrete blocks add 2/3 water and boil my frames clean gets the grooves clean. Use rubber gloves maybe to swash the frames around
Why do you not just use narrow starter strips rather than the deeper surplus foundation? I know it takes longer and is more work for the bees but it seems the quality of the final product would be much better.
lots of great tips here, thanks!

Great program,Thanks.
You could do a series on this following through the whole season, thanks.
I plan to, thanks!
Nice work. Seems like you have put some time into it to figure out what works for you. Makes sense to me. Keep up the good work and stay well.
I got my order from Skipper today. Beautiful craftsmanship!

I just keep remembering the punchline to that old joke, “ Look at that “S” Car Go!” 😂😂🤣👍🐝🐝🐝🐝 Great info! Thanx.
Great info Gus! Thank You!!!
Really good video Gus!! I’m hoping to expand more into comb honey. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for sharing. Love your videos

I actually have one ordered!

Very informative. Hope to try and produce some comb honey some day. Subbed after you were on the live chat yesterday!
Subbed and liked, greetings from Grey County Ontario!

I like it, cheap enough
I found my wax was too hot in the crock pot and melted the foundation and it flopped over. Thanks for this video. Very helpful.
Great information, great video! Thankyou; definitely going to follow your advice. ~Jim ... jimmyksbees
Good ideas. Would like to try some comb honey. I’ve got some old shallows I do not use anymore. I’m going to some a try this year. Thanks

Thank you very much, very good information..
can you please give me the measurements of that frame?
thanks..

Great video! Curious about what you get for a full frame of comb honey. Large population of middle eastern people in our area.
$35 bulk

I would think they need embossing for the bees to work them in a way you would be satisfied with.
Mr. Gus, Interested in knowing the approximate percentage of your production supers you dedicate to comb honey. Thank you
Typically has been up to but not over 10%
@@gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529 Thanks! Appreciate your videos…
I will be trying my hand at comb honey this year. I am still trying to decide whether I want to do Ross Rounds or straight from the frame. I'd love any and all input before I get started!
Kenneth Taylor DeSoto Illinois, forgot to add build fire under 25 gallon barrel
Gus I can't find medium thin surplus foundation anywhere. Can you please tell me where you bought it?
Dadant
Good tricks. How many comb supers do you put on a hive at a time? Under super? Top super?
1 at a time till they get going then I may have more. Under super if the last one is close to ready.
What is the thickness of the top bar and bottom bar on your shallow supper frames
🤷♂️, you would need to as Mr. Luttrell of 777 apiaries. He made them for me.
Great info again! Whats the smallest starter strip you've used? Have you ever made your own foundation?
About an inch
Meant to ask, do you put comb honey box directly on the excluder or on top of another medium?
On top of an extracting super
Thanks for the info.
I used to do that way too heck with that way i now boil my framesu can use a turkey fryer fill with water. Till boiling di ur frames comes out clean😊
the strip left over from the mediums frames you call waste .. do you mean you throw it out . or do you still harvest the honey and wax from it ?
I melt it down
Just a little thought have you ever tried to cut your comb with a pizza cutter. You may like it 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️. Thanks for your video’s and information

Good tip

Why not make a metal surenge u suck up the wax push it out in a controlled manner like getting a shot
