It's so funny because I've heard so many great things about this Laurence Olivier in the past and then when I finally watched Rebecca, and a couple years after my first viewing, I realized that they were right. He was so unlike any other actor that has ever graced the Silver Screen. Brilliant, eloquent, handsome, vulnerable, soft-spoken but quick to silent and deadly rage, if provoked...I think his accent and grace is what floors me. He was one of the greatest actors of all time.
Olivier n Fontaine are the best couple ever im so glad to see this movie just now I'll keep watching it from now on 😮😮😮😅😅😅 a million thanks to this channel !!!!! I ❤❤❤❤ it very much 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Huge Rebecca fan- the book was spectacular! Joan Fontaine quite frankly was the best thing in this film! I loved her, she played the main character so well! Great actress.
I'm puzzled. Why can't you believe it because you were 15? I would think it was a perfect age to 'get hooked'. I think one would identify with the character of 'I' at that age!
Joan's screen character is such a polar opposite of Olivier's. Thus it is easy to see, as the film goes on and we learn more about the unseen Rebecca de Winter..why Max chose this type of woman, as his second wife. Later, her strength and devotion begin to come forth, and we start to admire her. The film tells the story in a sort of flashback, so we realize later that the second Mrs. de Winter has matured, seasoned, and come into her own. Quite an acting job for Miss Fontaine, one BTW which she does quite well!!
My God -haven't seen this movie since I saw it on tv more than 30 years ago ...I didn't remember Joan Fontaine that lovely -and wow how she looks like her sister Olivia (de Havilland)...
You're not alone--I'm 17 with a passion for old movies, especially black-and-white screwball comedies and film noirs. I'd love to major in film history/theory, but there's not really a job market for them. This is one of Hitchcock's best films, hands down.
caly: Well that was part of it, but I think it was because it was an old movie as well. In their minds, "B&W=Old movie=boring" I agree, there are MANY B&W films which are classics. Mr. Smith is one of my particular favorites! ;)
I had to read this book for english and thought it was going to be soooo gay but its so good! i can't put it down. looking forward to seeing the rest of this movie :D
Joan was wonderful in this film.Everyone is so rude to her in this film.I love the scenes of her with Mrs.Danvers-total louse!!The funny scene is Mrs.Danvers obsessing about Rebeccas fur, underwear and nighty to a terrified Joan.
Somebody actually said that this beat out Citizen Kane at the Oscars. It's a great film, but it came out before Kane. Duh! I just think it's insulting that Hitch never won Best Director.
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my new clip of 1930's cigarette cards of Laurence Olivier, George Formby, Errol Flynn, Gracie Fields, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire, and Vivien Leigh.
caly: I believe it's on YT. I say it as consolation ;) Seriously, it is. What about Griffith's 'Birth of a Nation', popular and big budget yet HIGHLY controversial.
caly: I thought Birth of a Nation was interesting and I occaisionally have watched it. Only twice. I don't agree w/ the racism at all, but I find it interesting to watch.
She and 'He' (with his fine-cut 1940's mustache) are terribly posh don't you think? Oh! I know - I'm being so terribly presumptuous about the pair. But (gasp!) you have to agree - what a fine bunch of chums they all are?
Olivier is dashing indeed. But if Robert Donat had accepted the role, probably the character of Joan Fontaine would not have been able to get a bite of her scrambled egg, would you? Check out Robert Donat in the 39 Steps and his hot movie with Marlene Dietrich. He's definitely irresistable and his accent matches with Joan's. Joan's amazing in Rebecca. You'd like to watch her scenes over and over again. Only Audrey Hepburn has the same touch as Joan.

Perfect description of Olivier.👌

I really love this movie and I love Laurence Olivier. He was the greatest actor ever
I love how he treats her like a child and she responds...and doesn't notice, til she starts growing up at Manderley.
Sir Laurence is breathtakingly handsome :)
Huge Rebecca fan- the book was spectacular!
Joan Fontaine quite frankly was the best thing in this film! I loved her, she played the main character so well! Great actress.
I'm 16 years old, and I love the book "Rebecca" The suspense is fabulous. And, the way the book ended, fabulous! xoox
princesskaitlyn524 I also started reading the book when I was 16 and fell in love with it instantly!
Mrs. Van Hopper is a piece of work! I love how she puts her cigarette out in the jar of cold cream.
I couldnt believe I got hooked on to this movie at age 15! it was so intriguing!!!

Two Words: Laurence Olivier
Joan & Sir Lawrence where magnificent
I love old Hollywood and I really enjoy watching old movies.
Love that movie...
This is one of my all time fav movies.Great movie and great book. It was the first film I bought and is still my fav version of the book.
Wonderful book by Daphné du Maurier! I love it! And great movie! Ah, Laurence Olivier!
Man what a beautiful woman. I wish there were more that had class like her these days.
I am so glad Hitchcock went with Joan Fontaine over Vivian Leigh. She's so much better as The Second Mrs. De Winter.
I agree. Too hot for words.
"I'm asking You to marry me, You silly little fool!". Ohh, how could any girl refuse?
My God -haven't seen this movie since I saw it on tv more than 30 years ago ...I didn't remember Joan Fontaine that lovely -and wow how she looks like her sister Olivia (de Havilland)...

aw... I wish Larry -sigh- invited me to his table ;D
Oh, yes! I saw the movie a few months before reading book, and instantly fell in love with both! :)
luv this film, eventhough i was born in the 90s :)
watched it in film studies
depending on where you're from the film is quite easy to come by! I am from the uk and had no trouble finding it on the internet.
Read about the movie in "Rebecca: The making of a Hollywood Classic"
im THIRTEEN and i love the book rebecca! i hope i get to see the movie sometime
caly: I have seen that part. Very well done. Can only imagine how it would be in sound.
caly: Well that was part of it, but I think it was because it was an old movie as well.
In their minds, "B&W=Old movie=boring"
I agree, there are MANY B&W films which are classics. Mr. Smith is one of my particular favorites! ;)
Rebecca is a beautiful name :)
have you watched him in King Lear?
mmm... the Seventh Seal. That's a movie that's on my neverending list to watch
caly: Citizen Kane? Now, that's just ridiculous.
caly: 'But hey, I'm in love w/ good movies!'
It seems too few people do these days.
I had to read this book for english and thought it was going to be soooo gay but its so good! i can't put it down. looking forward to seeing the rest of this movie :D
caly: I meant that it's ridiculous that such a great and well-known film is 'out of stock'.
@punksandra her name is never given i think
caly: Well, they've got Birth of a Nation on DVD, so I'd assume it is as well.
Post the scene where Mrs. de Winter visits Rebecca's room.
caly: I have never seen Potemkin.
Also, I think I saw a copy of Citizen Kane in Barnes and Noble about a year or more ago.
why they never say her name
I love this movie!
I just bought the video used for $2! I wish the DVD was easier to find, though. I'd prefer that....D:
Joan was wonderful in this film.Everyone is so rude to her in this film.I love the scenes of her with Mrs.Danvers-total louse!!The funny scene is Mrs.Danvers obsessing about Rebeccas fur, underwear and nighty to a terrified Joan.
caly: I assume Intolerance is on DVD, right?
Somebody actually said that this beat out Citizen Kane at the Oscars. It's a great film, but it came out before Kane. Duh! I just think it's insulting that Hitch never won Best Director.
@92af you obviously don't know very much about acting. Larry si considered to be the greatest actor of all time by many including me.
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please check out my new clip of 1930's cigarette cards of Laurence Olivier, George Formby, Errol Flynn, Gracie Fields, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire, and Vivien Leigh.
what's the name of the secound lady de Winter ?
from where did you find the film??
im related to Laurence Olivier! distantly... :D
caly: I believe it's on YT. I say it as consolation ;)
Seriously, it is.

I first saw this in school, most of the kids hated it party 'cause it was in black and white. CRETINS!!! ;)
@hansakalie Watch it and find out. ;)
You might like it, I know I did.
Mrs. Van "HEFFER" and "Mrs." Danvers should've gotten together... but, I don't want to watch! ;-)
Troll
caly: Citizen Kane? Now, that's just ridiculous.
