China Traffic. Could you drive in china? Must see

  • If you are planning on going to China and thinking of driving there this video will give you an idea of what to expect.
This video was shot in China in a town in Cangnan county. November 2013.
it is a small, by Chinese standards, town, so there is no traffic lights on intersections like this one.
Every time i go to china i am in the state of shock and owe from the way they drive!
You can see that no-one backed down, they only move forward no matter how dense the gridlock is. Even a police car was calmly pushing through the gridlock. They enter the intersection full speed and proceed until about an inch from crushing into another car or biker.
In any american city driving like that would cause a lot of road rage, but for Chinese this is a routine affair, nothing special and nothing to worry about...
I never saw anyone getting upset, yelling or flipping an equivalent of a "bird".
NEWS: 2014 - November. This video was featured in a Japanese TV program.

You just have to be a Chinese to drive in China. Srsly, I went to China to visit my relatives and almost have a heart attack driving in there, and my relatives was like: "just be more Chinese, and then you will know how to drive". I tried, and it worked! The problem is as soon as I got back to Toronto, I got 3 tickets in one month.

Not only can I drive in China but I do regularly now. I have a Chinese drivers license (took me 5 tries). My wife is Chinese and now when we go there we rent a car just like here. The traffic looks crazy but I actually prefer to drive there over here because we waste sooooo much time at stop lights and stop signs here (wasting fuel I might add). As you see in the video an uncontrolled intersection is just entered slowly and you wiggle your way through. It actually works very well and no one gets angry (for the most part the horn honking is just the way they announce their position).

Currently driving on China highways, and as a piece of advice: there are no rules, expect the unexpected and practice defensive driving. Said the latter, you can stick to your civilized rules, drive at the correct speed, and keep in your track and they won't bother you ( of course after they overtake you, they will get into your path....perhaps trying to demonstrate dominance or the real way they learn how to drive in Mario carts)

Having driven in China, I find that lane discipline on motorways is dreadful. It is very common for people to hog the middle or outside lane (lane 2 or 3) at well below the speed limit rather than keeping to the right when not overtaking. I frequently had to undertake people because of this. Lorry drivers are among the worst and frequently have defective lights at night.

It looks like Chinese traffic is ancient Chinese philosophy in action. Because China has been a crowded place for thousands of years, with three or four generations often living under one (small) roof, there's been a great emphasis on respect, accommodation, and avoidance of conflict. Even the Chinese classic "The Art of War" teaches that a good general wins with a minimum of bloodshed and destruction, and without alienating the populace of the conquered territory.

I live in China. Trust me when I say....what you see here is ABSOLUTELY normal. Nobody ever stops. Nobody 'yields' or 'gives way' (because that is seen as LOOSING FACE). Everybody cuts in / blocks you / changes lanes / forces their way in front. It's CHAOS! They think nothing of changing from left lane, cut across 3 lanes of traffic to turn right and visa-versa. Never indicate!
2 wheeled vehicles are COMPLETELY ignored as if they don't exist. Cars will just cut them up and treat them with contempt. AND....with more and more cars being sol..... it's getting WORSE.

See, these uncontrolled intersections work if everyone is used to them and knows how to drive assertively without causing a collision. Problems arise when someone who is used to this kind of free-for-all driving is in a region where traffic laws _are_ obeyed, and does something that the other drivers aren't prepared for. Same goes the other way around-put any American driver on roads like these and they would either freeze up or t-bone another car.

Go to any countries in Western Africa and it gets 100x worse.
Go to Bangladesh and it gets 1000x worse.
