    Mr Ellis along with David McCullough, Ron Chernow, Gordon Wood and Richard Brookhiser got me into American history. For that I’m grateful. Greetings from Sweden

      Advice from an American whose mother's first language was Swedish: if you're interested in The War Between the States, pay attention to the prolific Gary Gallagher, who has many videos on TH-cam. Allen Guelzo is also excellent, but a little too partisan for my tastes.
      My favorite book about Franklin Roosevelt is Jonathan Alter's "The Defining Moment." There are other, much longer books about FDR, but Alter's is remarkable.
      If you're curious about Eisenhower's Cold War presidency, you could do no better than to read Evan Thomas' "Ike's Bluff."
