So true, France and other European powers have a horrendous past. King Louis XVI enacted the Black codes or Code Nori, to regulate slavery through out it's French controlled colonies. Then came Napoleon and the Napoleonic codes. Reparations are due now, with interest.

I have to respectfully disagree. Haiti was France's source of wealth. It was that wealth that was financing France's expedition to Egypt. When France lost to Haiti, it had NO source of wealth and that's what caused France's downfall. By losing to Haiti, France lost Louisiana to the US; soon after France lost Egypt and Syria. Now France remain the poorest European nation, even Greece is wealthier than France.

Okay, yes, we know all of this. But what are we going to do about it?? We need to raise awareness of these situations. So many people are ignorant of these atrocities. With all that's going on with protests now, this is the time. After gaining their own independence, the Haitian revolutionaries pressured Europe to end its own slavery, an idea which eventually made its way to America. This is why the West still holds a grudge against Haiti with all their constant sanctions on the region. So, we also owe a debt to Haiti and need to form greater solidarity with them and raise awareness.
