🌹 Organic Rose Fertilizer - No Smell | Great Big Roses | Humic Acid and Kelp

  • I share my plan to test Great Big Roses humic acid and kelp fertilizer after another Rosarian recommended it. I will check back and report the progress of the roses in a few weeks. Bonus - this is a fertilizer with no smell so animals won't smell, trample and dig at the base of your plant.
Many of us are struggling with black spot in our roses. It is often something that we have little control over due to our humid/rainy environments. It can be frustrating and I have found that the only solution is to hand pull or blow the affected blooms and ensure that the beds are cleared of dropped leaves. Ensuring that your roses are getting the right nutrients will promote stronger and healthier roses. After another Rosarian recommended Great Big Roses, I reached out to Great Big Plants and received the sample for free.
(Update: After testing this product, we have decided to partner with Great Big Plants)

You should try alfalfa meal for roses. I am not vegan but alfalfa is vegan and it contains triacontanol which is a naturally occurring plant hormone which some plants love, others it has no affect on but roses love it! It’s normally sold as food for livestock in a pelleted form but if you buy it and give it to your roses you will see the results. #magic

Good morning! Watching your video w great interest. I think a lot about how our choices cause change around us - an important one is what we feed our plants. I do a true "hot compost" Charles Dowding style - 2 days ago our compost was 140 degrees. Applying this weed-free compost full of good bacteria to the top of the soil layer is a good thing - I try to follow his plan in general - what a gentle soul.
I build my beds on cardboard using screened topsoil and horse manure - then I layer compost, then mulch.
I've JUST started feeding my plants. This year I winter-fed the peonies with bone meal (I was a vegetarian for years but not currently) basalt rock dust, and a high phosphorus feed- the result was spectacular this spring.
I have a (5 or 10) gallon plastic container of fish emulsion - just started to use this year. At first I mixed the fish emulsion in 3 gallons of water and hand watered each plant - then I saw Jason's film (Fraser Valley Rose Farm) - he uses a container that fits onto the hose end - trying that.
We built our home by hand from scratch on land that was scrub forest - I often think about what the 100 year effect of our lives will be here.
What do I do and what do I buy? How much plastic am I surrounded by? A LOT!
We are about to buy a hoop house from Farmer's Friend - LOTS of plastic associated with that purchase.
So far I don't have black spot - but we'll see after this long deep summer rain...
Really great video - thank you so much for your careful planning and monitoring and for leaping in to try new things - its very helpful to others.
    Warm regards Jennie

Thank you for the support Jennie. It is really nice to know that you feel the same about our environment. I need to check out Charles Dowding and will make a note to do so. Do you put the compost down at 140 degrees?! What kind of compost are you using? I am thinking about mushroom next season. Thank you for watching and commenting.

That’s really cool!!! I did the no dog method on a small scale in an area that was so awkward. Now I have annuals I grew from seed instead of constantly battling weeds. Your garden sounds amazing!!!

Jennie, I've been using a hose end sprayer lately and I love it! It's the Ortho one. There's only a few out there Ortho, Chameleon, and the Chapin-style type. I want to end up getting the Chapin style one because it looks like it is better quality but the Ortho is working fine for now! I use it for fungicides and water soluble fertilizers.

ahhhh this stuff looks so interesting!!!! I love that it has humic acid! I've been researching that stuff lately. I saw a soil scientist on YT say that she thinks it's going to become part of the gardening protocol in the next 10 years just how fertilizer and compost is.

This is so interesting because I used Kelp meal, and humic acid combined with Rose Tone this year in the spring. I bought all three products from Amazon. Well now it’s all combined for me already in this.

@@TheRoseGeek I am a novice and just decided to do it based on an article I read on the American Rose Society page. I didn’t measure anything specific, just gave a handful of all three to all the roses. I had wonderful results, in fact most of my roses didn’t get any blackspot this year. I also have tons of basal shoots forming still even though I have not fed them again yet. I’m super happy with the results. I will be using again. ♥️

@@TheRoseGeek did they have any special suggestions for new roses? I have a lot of gallons coming this season and, as you know, heirloom is very particular about telling you what fertilizer you can and cannot use to keep your warranty intact. In fact, when you file for a credit for a lost plant, they also want to know what soil and additions you used at planting. Their policies are largely the reason I use gentle and organic fertilizer (which has turned out to be a good, albeit stinky) thing.

The only thing they stressed was no more than 4ounces to one gallon of water. Not that it will hurt the plant, but it’s wasting good stuff 🤪. I have heard Heirloom is a pain with refunds. What you may consider doing is sending Heirloom my video. Just kidding hahaha. Email them the product and ask if it’s covered within their warranty to use an organic liquid fertilizer with 0.4-0-.4 NPK. Let them know it’s also certified. Once you have their response in email that it’s approved, you should be good to go. Let me know what they say.

I have a hard time knowing how organic I should go. I know to never do synthetic but what about David Austin’s brand Fertilizer and Maxsea? They aren’t 100% organic but they also are not synthetic, they are “made of organic material” Do you like either? I’ve heard such good results but I don’t want to stress my roses

0.04-0-0.4 but it supposedly pulls in micronutrients and reduces black spot.
