The oil barrel tax was supposed to be the property tax fix/relief and yet here we are Texas, besides they have way too many Californians over there and not here so we will win!

@TheRealHempress and that's the million-dollar question: Will property taxes go down as values go down, or will the government keep that gravy train cruising?

So you want a lot higher fees & sales tax instead?
      30+% state sales tax?
That $10k used car would be $13.3k.
That $100 part is now $133.
Your $30 in weekly beer is now $40.

Since Florida doesn't have state tax, we have higher sales tax. Property tax pays for roads, fire and police stations, schools, and other safety/community infrastructure. I'm not sure about your life experiences, but I can tell you that places without property taxes don't have nice, safe communities with all these amenities/benefits that we enjoy. If you are unhappy with how your property taxes are being used to improve your area, then please become involved in the meetings for how the money is used.

I work for a large insurance company. I find this hilarious. The insurance market is horrible right now. I'm seeing premiums that are forcing people out of their homes. They simply can no longer afford their mortgage due to insurance and tax increases. It needs to be better regulated and get those prices down.

I am in that situation. My homeowners insurance has trippled in the 5 years I moved back to Florida. I forsee a time where I may have to leave the state. Auto insurance cost has also jumped through the roof. I feel like I'm being squeezed hard with no relief in sight.

I was sitting at a traffic light on GATLIN Blvd in Port Saint Lucie and was rear ended by a uninsured, unlicensed driver. He was going so fast he never even braked. He spoke no English and seemed to be intoxicated, police did nothing to him, no arrest? His car was totaled. I had to pay out of pocket for my deductible (my car had severe damage but not totaled) I have three herniated discs in my neck and need surgery. ( still paying my deductibles for orthopedic visits. I couldn’t sue, he had no legal residence or assets. Luckily I was driving an SUV, it could have been worse for me. Please Change the laws in Florida for these uninsured drivers.

Did you choose not to rebuild? When there is a mortgage, they don't give the home owner money possibly not repairing the home. The insurance companies have statutory duties to protect the bank's interest, your home. Or perhaps the mortgage company forced placed the home's insurance. They can do that when the homeowner policy lapsed OR there was a mistake. That coverage is for the bank but you pay and it's pricey! I 100% agree that out-of-control homeowner insurance happened under DeSantis's watch. Starting in 2018 when attorney fees ran amok and he's just talking about it now, he never forced a session to address that and it ran my employer under.

Our High property taxes are forcing us out of our home in South Beach. Large investors with significant financial power are taking over, which makes life incredibly difficult for ordinary people like us. It feels as though South Beach is increasingly becoming a place exclusively for tourists, with hotels and dormitories financed by these investors to house their workers, who will serve their businesses. It’s a challenging situation for the local community. Is there anything that can be done to help us? I am sure there is a way to control the property tax for the '' locals'' versus investors.

It was a bizarre scene. After he crashed into me he tried to drive away and he hit another car with a woman and a baby in the back seat.
I’m used to reckless drivers I lived in NY most of my life However it’s definitely more reckless and more dangerous down here.

What is in the pipe he is smoking. My home - (1) Citizens Insurance went up to almost $13K, (2) scheduled to be kicked off Citizens in 2026 (3) Forced Flood insurance kicks in, in 2026, (4) being pushed on to some no name insurance co that has no cash on hand to pay claims. FYI- Big/known named insurance company’s are setting up new LLC’s under other names to come in for a cash grab with little money to pay claims. This business model protects the known insurance company’s and allows the LLC‘s to close up shop without ppl knowing who they really are.

Condo buildings insurance about double from prior level in 2023….so we were at $585k and went to $1 million…for all coverages, bulk of increase was property. Our condo dues went from $375 to $550 per month primarily due to insurance. So stable or minor premium decreases NOW do very little to restore affordable insurance. We elected to stay with our insurer even though Citizens would be quite a bit lower (with less coverage).
Also, the mandatory roof replacement demanded by insurers is a total scam. Inspections for roofs, require a licensed roofer to ‘estimate the remaining useful life’ of the roof (some hungry licensed roofers want you to replace it,even when unnecessary). The unscrupulous absolutely underestimate the remaining life of a roof.
We have cement tile roof, installed in 2008 as a 50 year roof. So in 2023 Joe Blow roofer estimates ‘2 years of remaining useful life’…even if you dropped the 50 years projected life for our tile to 30, that would give us 2038 as our replacement date, or 13 more years of useful life. If we said 40 years, we would be at 2048 as replacement year, 23 more years. NOT TWO!!!
Let me say, we maintain our roof and reset any loose tiles, repair any minor cracks, annually. We have zero leaks. Our thick cement tiles are very heavy and do not blow off in a hurricane like Irma in 2017 here in Palm Beach County. We lost one tile in 27,000 square feet of roof for our 3 buildings (out of 42) probably due to location at the very edge and bottom of the front edge of one building. Easily replaced and very minor.
By the way, in all of the major hurricanes all the videos show the shingles ripping off the roofs in large swaths. Tile and metal slab tile, not likely.
If we are forced into UNNECESSARY replacement of a very expensive roof years before we should be, we too will go with the cheaper less hurricane resistant asphalt shingles, because why put in expensive 50 year life materials if you have to replace before 20 years ANYWAY!
We are 6 miles inland with no storm surge risk as we are 16 ft above sea level here. Suburban Lake Worth.
We are 2 story condo buildings, cement block with stucco surface.
A neighboring condo association replaced metal ‘tile’ slabs (again a 50 year roof) which a retired roofer mentioned are very easy to repair, metal can be welded and any holes filled. He was very worked up that their insurance demanded ‘roof replacement’ so they went with asphalt shingles because why put very a expensive metal or cement tile roof on, if you are forced to replace a 50 year roof at 18 years after installation?
As for car insurance, when we first moved here full time (2012) we paid more for ONE car, than for the two we had in Massachusetts. The agent explained it is due to UNINSURED vehicles. These people buy insurance, pay 1 monthly installment, register their vehicle, then pay nothing and are cancelled for non payment.
If they get cancelled, the registry should get a notice from the insurance companies, and then suspend the drivers license and/or impound the vehicle. If we did this maybe the uninsured auto crises would disappear.
Everyone in South Florida is paying the price for uninsured drivers!
