Is The Royal Enfield Classic 350 THE BEST Backroad Motorcycle In The World? A Modern Classic Review!

  • We ride the stunning Royal Enfield Classic 350 (in Chrome Bronze) across Wales to Snowdonia National Park, all on backroads, to establish whether this is the best backroad motorbike money can buy.
In the most stunning location, The Ol' Man discusses this Modern Classic bike in an interesting review, and makes some very pertinent points.
Beautifully filmed, and with some awesome riding shots, with great audio of the sound of the bike (you can really hear the engine and exhaust), this is not only an interesting motorcycle review, but a visual joy.

    What a great review.
You see a bike that looks like they’ve perfected the aesthetics and wonder if it’s actually any good. The review soon answers that for us. I’m getting one.

I've had one about a year! It's a great bike, but:
      - In real world usage in the US, the power is just not enough for anything but surface street errands. Back roads in the US are not as narrow and slow as in the UK, so my bike is outclassed and honestly not sufficiently grunty for many of them.
      - US supply chain is a nightmare. I waited 3 months after my speedometer died in the spring for a replacement, and the replacement fails IN THE SAME WAY on the day it was replaced. Now I'm waiting for another.

    I own a royal enfield classic 350, 2012 model.
I have clocked nearly 2 lakh kms up til now on my bike and I can easily say I am proud of my bike!
I have ridden it on almost all kinds of altitudes, on tough terrains and weather conditions and my classic 350 never, ever failed me. And trust me, I am not exaggerating a bit... 😊
The comfort, the pure joy of relaxed, laid back riding that this bike gives is just unparalleled. Of course, it all boils down to one's choice and preferences after all. But this is one rough and tough bike.
It's still going strong and will stay like this forever!

Great video, very thoughtful. I bought a Hunter 350 earlier this year for the very same reasons: to explore the back roads where I live in West Cork, Ireland. I still have my 650 V-Strom (which I intend to keep for longer distances on the main roads), but I never really used it for those tiny and really tight single track roads with grass growing down the middle, often with nowhere to turn if you found yourself facing downhill at a dead end and bullocks grazing in the field ahead. For this kind of exploring, these small 350s are ideal, with nothing to worry about that could possibly sully the pleasure. And these long stroke engines just sound great!

I own an RE 500 classic (my second one) and an RE Interceptor (INT 650 here in the States) I have 2 scooters as well and a Janus 450. I took my 650 in today to have my brakes looked at, while there I test rode a 350 classic. I have read/watched every review on this bike. They do not do it justice. I was BLOWN AWAY by how absolutely comfortable it is. The riding position, The seat, The Absolute SMOOTHNESS of the engine. The supple suspension. My God. It is, BY FAR the most comfortable 2 wheeled conveyance I have ever ridden. (the 650 is smooth but the foot position is Terrible!) My only concern was the lack of energy at 60MPH. Lots of freeways here, they are an inevitable part of any ride here in Oregon. Two. Just TWO more horsepower and it would be 100% Perfect. In spite of this, I was ready to trade in my 650 for one.. but they offered only $2,000 in trade in value. My 650 is the Chrome version with extras, it was, when I bought it, $8,000 out the door and it only has 2,200 miles on it. I think I'll have to sell my 650 to a private buyer and then get that 350!

Be patient man and wait for awhile, there are few rumors that RE is preparing a 650 classic to be released next year. This could be the perfect ride, I mean, everything you liked on the Classic 350 and the performance of the well proved 650 engine. This gonna be a very versatile bike. Good for commuting on your everyday life and powerful enough to hit the high ways.

I have a Classic 500 and an Interceptor as well, but I haven't ridden the 350. I must have one of the smoother Classic 500s because the vibration doesn't bother me, sure it's a bit vibey but it doesn't cause me issues. The reason I'm posting though is that there's a Classic 650 in the works, variously predicted to be released sometime in 2024 or maybe early 2025. Now that would be a hell of a bike I reckon, the power of the 650 and the ergonomics of a Classic.

I find myself being the odd one out here in Sweden, in that I like "slow" motorcycles. Everyone here is obsessed with torque and speed and either ride sport bikes or harleys, very few riders here seem to care about cruising around at comfortable speeds and enjoying the scenery like I do. I had someone the other day literally laugh at me and say if I don't want to ride at at least 250km/h "I have no business riding a motorcycle." And it was a woman, too, believe it or not. So much for women being the sensible ones! Seeing this video is refreshing, it seems UK motorcycle culture is a lot more reasonable than Sweden's...

Those kind of people are full of it. I see many people with big capacity bikes just struggling to control them and drop them....and on country roads like you get in the UK and much of Europe they can be a handful, and no fun.
Too much power can be dangerous whilst loads of torque makes for lazy riders who can't ride a lower power bike within its power range using the gears.

In 1964 my little Honda 150 twin gave me all the wonderous feelings of freedom and adventure that any of my more current rides supply. I am lucky to own several more powerful motorcycles but nothing beats the simple pleasure of a thumper on a two lane country road at moderate speeds. I have also fitted the open air filter cover, but unsure whether to leave it on due to the induction roar being annoying on longer rides. You can own a powerful bike but you need to always control that power and most of the time you can’t use it to max unless you are a crazy person therefore classic makes a lot of sense when you want to push it and when you just want to enjoy the ride at a slow pace. Although it can’t compete with those powerful bikes on a motorway but backroads are the place where it shines. You are so right about the mudguards, the Classic 350 is very much an exception in this regard. Last year I bought a Honda NC750X, Honda's practical, do everything motorcycle. Even so, I ordered a mudguard extender before I even received the bike, because the mudguard of the NC is obviously too short like on 99% of modern motorcycles. Finding an extender was no problem at all, several companies make them for this model alone. Why is that? Because everyone knows that short mudguards are useless crap (or they design motorcycles and have never actually owned one). So keep complaining about this foolishness, you'll get a thumbs up from me every time.

Absolutely brilliant review. You, Sir, are the only reviewer I have ever heard that recommends those style mudguards, and you are right. Function over style every time for me. I watch other bike reviewers and they complain about that the finish on the front of the engine is worn away/faded/rusted........no sh!t Sherlock!!!!, the bike has been ridden with with the wheels blasting sand/gravel etc. on the bike...its akin to a having it sandblasted every time it is ridden. Last year I bought a front rubber mud flap to add to my GS1150, the only place I could get one was from India, go figure and RE's are made in India, they learned in India from their climatic conditions, how to have function over style.

Interesting too that the new ‘Harley-Davidson’ X440 has longer mudguards for the Indian market, whereas when it will be sold elsewhere it will have short (useless) ones.

Good to hear your philosophical side. Good to hear you speak. I am totally on board with your thinking. Royal Enfield should use your review to sell the bike. But I reckon they will make a California surf video and go for some young successful people, needing a hip free time in contrast to their silicon valley lifestyle. Anyway, the sound coming from the motorcycle comes across very well in the recordings. As an everyday motorcycle, if it can be trusted. An excellent machine. I'm starting to feel like I might would have one. As a number two bike. I have seen the bike "live" and it has a presence in all kinds of company. To be honest, it would probably be my number one bike.

Lovely classic look on that bike. My late father rode a Matchless in his younger days, and restored several bikes when he retired including a Vincent Black Shadow and several Nortons, so I got to know the look and sound of those old British bikes. At 63 I have only recently obtained a motorcycle license, and have a 110 cc Suzuki scooter but can relate to your picture of a relaxed ride, enjoying the scenery, stopping regularly and taking back country roads with very little traffic on them. A Royal Enfield 350 would be my dream bike once I get used to riding at highway speed.

They were affectionately known as 'Royal Oilfields', for good reason, so well done to the Indian owners for making a really decent bike out of them. I've since gone through quite a few large and fast bikes, mainly BMWs. Thought I'd given up biking due to age and slowing reflexes but.... hmmm.

I remember the sound of the ex-wartime despatch riders' bikes that used to be around in the 1960s. What hurts and offends my ear is the screaming and backfiring of high-revving bikes and utterly unnecessary (what sounds like) 'double declutching'.

What I need to know is will the Classic comfortably sit on 110kph/70mph for at least 30mins? Cheers - Doug.

If I was to ride off road on the sand dunes, let's say, and I was offered a 350cc or a 1000cc off road, I'll take the 350cc in a heartbeat because heavier bikes sink in the sand.

I had a classic 500 for 3 years, which I traded for an interceptor just over a year ago. That bike had a similar trait to what you describe ie not entirely shutting off into corners. Since it wasn't the type of bike to be whittling down the box my solution was to use the rear brake to trail into bends, just lightly as I'm talking about replicating the non existent engine braking. I disconnected the rear brake switch.
The interceptor is great. Loving it.
