  • HOW THEY BECAME FULL TIME SHEEP FARMERS (Touring a Brand New Sheep Barn)
After months of trying to get un-busy enough to visit my friends Romy and Ryan’s brand new sheep barn, I finally got to see it!!!
So I am taking you along for the ride.
In this video, Romy and Ryan talk about their new barn, how they expanded their sheep flock (DOUBLING IN SIZE!) and how they are also doing what many large producers don’t… creating a value-added business by creating a wool business!
All in all, I was blown away with their operation.
They have 3 young kids, very little additional help (thanks mom and dad!), and they built this barn to expand to a size that both Romy and Ryan could be full time sheep farmers.
Thank you to Circle R Livestock for opening your doors, and your life to me and well… the internet.
    #newbarnbuilding #sheepbarn #sheep
    Question…
What is your favourite thing about this barn???

My favorite thing about the barn itself are the windows through which the shepherd can watch the flock. As a spinner and knitter, however, I am very intrigued regarding the wool. Dorset wool is durable and elastic - great for socks!

I like the ceiling and insulation part cuz I’m sure it helps keep the auto water bowls flowing in winter for the most part. This is a big plus. Individual water shut offs are smart too. Barn plans allowing for extra lounge, wash-up, bathroom, desk, and warm viewing areas are really smart and will be well used. I’m sure Sandi wished she had planned these areas in her barn. Live and learn. (We sheep farm in western Canada). Winter is always a headache! Wish we farmed in southern Ontario. Some yrs we’re really lucky to get 2 cuts of hay.

I've been following you, Sandi for about 2 yrs. But this morning is the first time this video popped up. I really enjoyed watching how others 'do' it.🤭
Am guessing they don't do planting etc for their feed...which allows her husband to be more involved & doesn't distract her from the barn so much. Thrilling that the kids are growing up with vested interest in the process, too.
Will be repeating the watch to see what I've missed on the first go-round.👍

Wow!!! I'm loving the barn loft!!! I want one, don't you?! Imagine being able to camp out comfortably, drinking your coffee, doing your paperwork, editing and all that jazz, and be able to see your sheep with ease of access, especially during bad weather and hectic lambing days!!! This would be a great upgrade for you Sandi!!!

What an awesome video. I love to see younger farmers who are making it happen. Also the innovative ways to generate cash flow.
While all farming is similar, each farm is different in the way it's managed .
Farming is not only a business it's a lifestyle .
    Great job. God Bless.

Sandi, what I have learned is that anyone who makes their job look easy is someone who does it well, pretty much has it figured out and enjoys what they do.
As people have told me over the years I make my job look easy and I certainly enjoy what I do. (Mostly)
I move dirt for a living for the cranberry farmers (among other things) and most of my jobs are underwater before I start. Lol

As a self taught hand spinner processing 2-3 fleece a year now from start to finish - including some dyeing) what a joy to see the wool benefiting the farmer instead of commercial wool pool paying pennies. I love your channel! My Grandma raised a few sheep for wool. She then cleaned, spun with her spinning wheel, and dyed the yarn using plants, bugs, etc. which we wore the hats, scarves, sweaters, etc. that she made us. I always loved when she got a new lamb and it was too cold in the barn for the baby lamb and we would come visit to find a lamb in a box in the kitchen. ♥️ 🐑

Wow!!!!!!!!!! That is so amazing. A fantastic operation. I was unaware that there was anyone in Canada that did anything with the wool from their sheep other than send it off to the UK. I know in Winnipeg there are 2 small dealers of real wool and custom wool products but to my belief they obtain their stock from either the USA or the UK.

Oh where do I start? This vlog is just brilliant. Great to see another sheep setup in a similar locality working the same type of business model but tweaked to the interests of the grower and types of sheep. I am partial to Dorset’s as we grew them but they are solid units! Just love the barn. The white ceiling is so helpful re light quality and the little room upstairs is amazing. Able to be kept warm but with great vision. As for the value added business with the dyed wool. Such colours! Makes your fingers itch. I helped a friend dye and spin wool for a 15 m hall runner she wove. There is a lot of work involved getting the wool to this stage.
Great video Sandi promoting the industry. Those silos are massive.

I think the reason people buy wool from a farmer is they get a story a provenance with buying from the same place over and over.. the CRAP they sell in CRAFT stores that are especially a chain store is okay if you are making a couple tea cozies just to have a craft to do is not the same as learning about where that Wool or even Cotton came from. Planning how to use it. Learning the pattern or making your own pattern so that you can make the best pair of hand knitted Toe-Up socks or a hat for a very loved husband or a new baby that is in the need of wool diaper covers for cloth diapers. Or to be able to hand down Grandpa's favorite winter throw that was on Nana's couch as long as you can remember. Yarn from a craft store may be loved but it does not stand the test of time. We all love what you are doing for us knitter's, crocheted, and felter's and any of those people that just buy to help our economy. I do just about every craft I can get my hand on. I was a Chef so I have an eye for color, shape, and style. One last thing I wish I could put pictures on TH-cam comments maybe some day they will fix that. So I could show what I mean. I post pictures to Facebook but it is not a wide enough audience even though it may be all your friends. Very few Strangers(if you know what I mean) come an ask about the item you posted. I love my Facebbok friends but most of them already know about my crafts and I know about theirs. I buy from them. They from me. Oh I sell Cloth Sanitary Pads made from cloth only sold in the U.S. or Canada. PolyUrethane Laminate, Bamboo soaker and Minky. The softest pad for both periods and piddles. I also sew cloth belly bands for boy dogs and holey tails for girl dogs all sizes. Last I sew custom made bras biggest size I have sewn was 38M. For true understanding that is as big as a half watermelon the long trading kind of watermelon. Love you girl you know who you are. I am a 38H equal to a 34L small/medium cantaloupe. All of that fabric comes from England.

Hi Sandi! I am a hand spinner, weaver and knitter. Please use me as a resource if you want to have wool, dyeing, or other yarn-related questions and/!or stories. Many years ago, I visited a family’s hobby farm to teach their kids the process of scouring raw wool, picking and carding it into bats. Over several weekends we took their sheep fleeces from the backs of their animals to spinning it into yarn and then I knit the kids hats and scarves with their yarn.
The breed of sheep is very important for how the yarn will spin and the ultimate use of the item to be made. Close to skin items generally call for down breeds. Something like a Lincoln-Romney cross would be for rugs or other sturdy items.
Sheep give us a lifetime of learning, creating, friends and community gatherings like local sheep and lamb shows. Heart hugs to you Sandi! Thank you for being you. ❤-Lynne Wolters, waving to you from Vancouver, Washington.

    Also the loft and waterers.
But I prefer your automatic nursing set up, Sandi, and your handling system / collapsible pens.

At 15:00, Romy made me laugh with the comment, - He's going (hand sign for crazy)...everyone is sniffing and jumping and getting all crazy...- This still happens every Friday & Saturday night at the college bars. Rams working their way into the crowd sniffing and jumping getting all crazy for a teaser. HAHAHAHA

    Great.
Just love the use of the wool.
I'm with you I could sit in that loft for hours. Just needs a low window near that couch.

In Chicagoland, NW Suburbs - we keep water taps on a very slow drip to keep the pipes from freezing. Beautiful setup here...
