Hello John and TH-cam Family. I have this lens and it’s one of my FAVORITES! I love how diverse it is: portraits, wildlife, landscape and sports. It’s horrible when it comes to low light but truly a beast on sunny days and amazingly portraits. It’s fun to shoot with and I highly recommend it!
I've had mine two days and wasn't sure if I'd keep it before it arrived. Now, you couldn't pry it from my dead fingers. OMG it is amazing! I've just been shooting various birds so far on a lake behind our home here in central west Florida. I've set the super35/APC mode to a custom button and being able to flip between 600mm and an equivalent 900mm is very useful for the birds that are way off as I'd have to crop in post anyway and the images are still pin sharp.
@@JohnSisonPhotography I have wondered if I'd ever regret selling my Canon 100-400mm L and I can now answer definitely not! I have just come back in after testing animal eye/face lock and to my utter shock it works on flipping ducks! Ha!
Perhaps the reason you had some focusing issues with the 2X converter is that each Sony camera loses the ability to use phase detect auto focus for tracking when you stop down to a certain aperture. For the A7RIII, the cutoff is f/5.6, for the A7III, f/11, and for the A9, F/16. Only the A9 will retain full autofocus and tracking capability with this lens and the 2X. The only cameras will still work, but the autofocus performance will be degraded.
Hi John, I liked the format of this video. You really did wildlife with this canon on a Gorillapod ? 😅 With the 2xTC did you encounter any limitation with the AF system? Like being restrain in the choice or the number of AF spot you could use? Interesting the rhode microphone, do you need to post process noises a lot with it or not?
Thank you! I appreciate it and had to change things up cause I myself was getting bored haha. Ohhh yes the AF points were different so I have to mention that in another video - Thanks for the reminder! Do you like the placement of the mic? I get comments about it when I have it attached to my hat lol. Don't need to do any post with the sound quality.
Hey! Ive got a question , DO YOU REALLY NEED to buy the other foot to attach it to the tripod or with original it fits perfectly? (like this for ex Wimberley AP-616)
I have one scheduled to be delivered next week to be paired with my Sony A7rii and A6500. With the Sony A6500 APS-C, it will give me a 1.5x reach. Can't wait to test it.
@@patrikpol6892 It works with the Sony A7rii but The A7rii is more of a portrait and landscape camera and not for wildlife or sports. The 200-600 is more of a sports and wildlife lens and pairs best with the Sony A9 or a fast APS-C Sony A6500.
Hi Dear, I am using Canon 7D mk ii with 100-400 is ii for mainly Bird photography but want sift Sony system & my budget which permits Sony A7 iii and Sony 200-600, my question is that if shift Sony this combination & how it will work for birding? Means sharpness , low light performance & Focus performance comparison with my recent canon gear?
I honestly can't speak too much on the Canon setup because I haven't used it extensively as the Sony but from my experience with the Sony setup, its been able to capture fast moving shots including birds. The AF on it shouldn't have an issue when it comes down it thats for sure. Low light performance will be an improvement especially with the A7III.
I m going to buy this combo (a7iii+200-600) specially for bird photography, need sharp lens , its is sharp enough? Like canon 100-400L (now i m shooting with this is very sharp) pl tell me
Great review John. You mentioned the 100-400 had better contrast & colour than the 200-600. What about sharpness and overall IQ? I don’t suppose you did any comparison shot?
That will be in another video that will come out soon. With the overall sharpness, in good lighting conditions, its extremely sharp! Especially in the centres.
John Sison that’d be awesome to see comparison shots. I have the 100-400 for birds and I’m interest to see if the 200-600 is the better option. The 100-400 is great, but not long enough. I have the 1.4x TC, but get mixed results, with a lot of soft shots, even in good light using a fast shutter speed and low ISO. I don’t have the same issues without the TC, so I’m fairly confident it’s not down to poor technique.
There is a waterbird refuge in olympic park. I would park at the archery range centre and its about a 5-10min walk from there. If you check it out on google maps, it will show you the way to get there.
John Sison I will go looking for it when my uni load decreases a bit. I have never been to Olympic Park. On Google Maps I see the Archery Center, and a bird hide near a shipwreck. The shipwreck might be worth some photographs and video at dawn and sunrise is a good time for birds. Hopefully that area is open in the early mornings. Thank you for the guidance. And thank you for the effort you put into your reviews over the years. I have always enjoyed them, and Sydney (and the occasional Asian excursion) is a very scenic backdrop for photography.
You're welcome! The shipwreck is a short walk from the bird hide as well. Its on the same trail actually. They should be open early in the morning. Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate the subscribers that have stuck with me through the years! Really means a lot! Good luck with uni! 😉
I will need this lens next Solar eclipse I rented the 100-400mm GM lens and paired it with my a6300 for the 2017 eclipse and it was not quite enough zoom for me.
Hopefully this lens will get you what you need! I did get some pretty cool moon shots with this lens and if you're pairing it with the a6300, you'll get even closer!
John, glad to see you back, I am very impressed with the 200-600mm @600 mm image quality! I only have the 1.4x and it's not as fast or IQ as the lens alone but so far happy as I also own the Tamron 150-600 and will do side by side image testing @600. Now I am using a A7RII as the A7r4 is do in the USA Mid Sept. Thanks John great job!
Thank you! 🙏😊 Its so good. I think with the 1.4x its at least better than the 2x but agreed that without any tc is better. Ooft! You also pre ordered the a7r4?? I'm still on the fence about it but it would be amazing for cropping.
wow john. thats a huge ass lens bro lol i can imagine myself taking sneaker selfies with this. where i have to be like 5 metres away and it'll still be too close haha
I compared this new lense with my 100 400 gm and a 2x combo on both a7iii a6400 and a7riii.. dunno I feel comfortable with my existing combo .. 200 600 is much heavier..

I wouldn't bother if you already have that kit to be honest.
Hi where did you go to take the bird photos?
That was in Sydney Olympic Park at the bird sanctuary.
Great video. That's going to be my next lens for sure. I'm just trying to decide if I should upgrade to the A7RIV or get this lens first.
