Fix Phase Issues in 5 Minutes With Left-Right Method

    Phase between multimiced instruments tends to be completely overlooked by home studio producers and engineers. Yet the negative effects of bad phase relationships can ruin the potential of your mixes.
    Instead of avoiding the problems lurking in your mix, check out this easy 5-minute technique and make light work of fixing phase issues in Logic Pro.
    How come? Because you’re faced with a dilemma. Each microphone is “hearing” your instrument from a different angle and place. But not only that, the time it takes to reach each microphone is different.
    Which results in some unfortunate circumstances. Your top snare mic is out of phase with your bottom snare mic. The time discrepancy between your room mic and close mics can make the drums sound empty and phasey. All robbing your mix of weight and substance.
    With this five minute technique, all you need is the Logic Correlation Meter, Gain plugin, and hard-pan each track in your multimic setup. Five minutes and you're done!

    I used to do this... I have a book on mastering that teaches this. The thing is... don't do it; when you hard pan any element like that you're not looking at the actual phase correlation that exists in the song, and you will get negative correlation where it doesn't actually exist, the negative correlation will be caused ONLY by the hard panning -- which you can observe by monoing left and right panned tracks that read as negative correlation and see that there is no reduction in their volume when monoed... THUS, the panning is what is causing the negative correlation, not that phase. What I do now instead of this is look at a correlation meter with the intended panning, you'll already be able to see if it's going negative, then flip the phase on one channel of one of those tracks, if it wasn't already going negative it should if you flip it, meaning it was fine... if it's not fine flip the phase and leave it; then switch to mono and listen for a drop in volume, which there shouldn't be if you are getting positive correlation.

    You are only dealing with polarity 180 degree phase relationships. Things are normally not 180 degrees out of phase. To try to truly correct phase relationships you must use ALL PASS filters. I would suggest Little Labs IBP's. I have spent 40 years dealing with phase issues. It is very complex. These YT videos don't tell the REAL story. Good luck to all, just know it is much more complex than flipping polarity.

    Straight forward no bullshit, informative video. I appreciate it man. I usually get phase issues when I double track guitars in GarageBand. Typically I’ll reverse the phase invert on one of the tracks, sometime it doesn’t always negate the problem. As you said on here, EQ’ing can present certain problems. Good to know the approach on how to get rid of them after seeing this.

    Excellent info! Thanks. Especially the bit about the Linear Phase EQ. Had no idea a regular HPF introduced phase issues. In place of using the Voxengo plugin, couldn't you just turn snap off and nudge a clip backwards or forwards to align them?

    • @BrassPalaceRecording
      @BrassPalaceRecording  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Anthony! You very much could. In my experience, time-aligning by simply looking at audio forms doesn't necessarily mean your tracks have the best phase-relationships.
      It's weird, but I go through the paces with a time delay tool such as the Voxengo Sound Delay.

    Great video. Simplifying the complex, cutting through the noise. Bravo.
    Questions:
    Bucket 1: why not just use linear phase eq all the time then? Is there a different sound to them? What’s the advantage of the non linear phase eq.
    Bucket 2: if I’m writing using mostly electronic instruments, I’m still gonna come up against phase issues (right?). So what are the common issues there. I assume the fixes remain the same tho (?)
    Thanks again!

    best explanation! if i dont have linear eq can i eq before fixing phase?

  • @SouthYarraMan
    @SouthYarraMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good to see this problem and corrective process explained. But how would you solve this issue over a plus 30 track production, where there is a micro latency delay occurring over respective clips/samples in the session all the way down, from drum tracks, bass, guitars, keys, strings etc to vocals? All these will incur some degree of frequency masking but even when that is reduced by mirror EQ adjustments, there is still the global issue of clip time alignment and phase slip between tracks in the whole session at m/s level. The problem is audible and unfixable unless you can nominate one recurring sound as the target or master timescale, and then somehow use analysis tools to apply a global track clip fix that slave to that master. How to do that would be some sort of Eureka moment. Doing this manually by slip editing at sample level would be a huge task track by track/clip by clip, and you'd still need one accurate target track as your reference point. I get what you say about phase inversion but that wont fix micro timing issues and the problem is still there. I guess the SoundRadix Pi plugin would be the answer but its pricey. I wonder if there might be some other way. Thank you so much and seasons greetings.
