XHDATA is a very innovative radio manufacturer indeed! Here's a terrific value in a inexpensive quality AM/FM/SW Portable Radio! Seems above average in sensitivity coupled with good sound quality! Buy it! Thank you...
Looks like they've got AGC and Sync tuning on a little DSP chip for AM and shortwave use. About time! That radio is doing better than a SW with Sync and AGC, I bought 20 years ago at $500. Sometimes new technology really is better. Thanks for the video.
The FM in Europe is from 87 to 108 MHz. The scale from 64 to 87 can be used to listen to "official cars" like police or firemen.Very useful if there are troubles in the country. Thank you !!
FM2 (64 - 87 MHz) is used in Russia and Japan. In Russia and former allied countries has or still use the OIRT FM band that runs from 65,9 to 74 MHz with 30 kHz steps with an another stereo system (Polar stereo). FM in Japan runs from 76 to 90 MHz. In Japan they have expand the FM band to 95 MHz. I have also seen that Brazil expanded their FM band to 76 to 108 MHz. In the Netherlands some pirate stations use frequencies below the 87,5 MHz (3,5 meter pirates).
Listen to shortwave when the sun goes down due to ionosphere interference. You may need a supplemental antenna. I adapted rabbit ears and used an alligator clip to attach to the antenna.
Thanks for the relaxed and detailed review of this nice little radio! Did you get the silver or the grey colored one? Images I find online vary from almost black to very light silver, but I like the color you have!
$10.28 from the manufacturer website. Mine is on the way to the UK as I type. Works out to about £9, after PayPal took their bite. P.S. That price was including postage.
@@ma-mo Radio arrived today, and I'm very impressed. With just the built in antenna, I've heard more short wave stations than ever before. Quite a few languages that I didn't recognise, and a few that I did. FM and AM both seem to hold signals well. Surprisingly good sound for such a small radio, and it fits in a shirt pocket, at a push. Great value little radio.
What should be ideal specifications of DC adaptor to run this radio. It is operated with 2 AA cells that is 3volts. But for adaptor it mentions 5volts. Any idea? Also what should be the mah of the adaptor?
Hmmm. I just tried it to see if I get the same result: it still works for me (from the XHDATA link in the description). $11.38 total, shipped to Ohio, USA.
After selling in my quick shack all DC I find that the 219 is better filtered. with very little noise from my battery powered fan that's a plus. And found that a Obama converter.. the converter that is used in keeping the old tube tv. Tuned on the new system ..will pick up down converted 6 meter AM AUDIO. Hi hi
@@ma-mo Shure as you rember we went digital ...the old tvs were usefull so a" box "was used to convert the signal .. so once again the "tube" set could be used till the new replacement was purchased. We called them "after our president Obama boxes". Still you could use this box like a "down converter" on 64-87 Mhz so I get some voice mostly "fm /am "though hense the Obama box. Mine is a cheep tv ant through the "box" then a loop I place the near the radio. .
She is a winner. Got 5 meters of wire on a gator clip, then dug out my tentec bfo stand alone osc. Small coil printed on PC board " ping" I have a rig that reads ssb. And it's good and clear ...so now my 219 now works ssb .. so now folks get to work . Mmmm I wonder.. if the converters in USA analog/ new tv would work as the Chinese haven't gone digital. ??
If i use rechargeable aa batteries. Can i charge those batteries inside this radio with the power cable ? Or shall i remove those and get those charged with an external charger ??
A reviewer from my country India has confirmed me now that there is no mechanism to charge rechargeable aa batteries inside this radio. So I have to remove those batteries to charge with an external charger.
Thanks for the review. I have been looking for a cheap way to get into listening to SW radio. This looks like the perfect starter. Any recommendation for a cheap DC power cord?
Thanks, Tim. I don't use a power adapter, so I can't speak to that. But this device I'm betting doesn't burn through batteries. Edit: I just checked XHDATA's site, and they apparently don't sell any power adapters.
Bottom line :does it mute between stations and is it DSP tuned? These are UNACcEPTAble ONradiosbut if your,e new to the hobby they will sell you any bells and whistles because chips are cheap to manufacture!
My only issue with these cheap radios, no local/DX switch (usually), no SSB (a lot of signals you can miss out on when you don't have access to SSB, and you can use SSB for more than just listening to SSB signals), and it isn't full coverage (no CB reception, and there's a few broadcasts below 4Mhz). They're a good starter receiver, but you do miss out on a bit when you don't have SSB, I'd always opt for something with SSB even if it's a bit more expensive, and as a result you'll get a receiver that's full coverage as well. But there's a trick you can do to be able to listen to SSB on an AM only shortwave receiver. You can inject a signal into the radio (a NanoVNA works well in achieving this)
All certainly true. Of course, the cheapest SSB radio I've found is ten times the current price of this radio. Thanks for watching and commenting, madmax!
@@madmax2069 on XHDATA's site? Interesting. What radio is that? Do you recall? I was figuring $7 for this radio (without shipping) and about $70 for the cheapest SSB radios I've seen (without shipping). The Tecsun PL-330 is a bit over $70, for instance.
@@ma-mo I wouldn't say 10 times, being this is a $10 radio, going on their website they have a SSB capable radio for $60-$70 (sometimes as low as $50 when on a bigger sale). And if I was going to spend that much I'd probably buy a pl330. The way I see it, if you're going to buy a starter radio, get something decent and capable even if it's 5-7 times the price of a cheaper radio (unless it's for a little kid), simply because you will usually have a lot better experience with it than with the cheaper receiver.
@@ma-mo the D-808 as of right now is around $70 (and you can sometimes find it for $50 when there's a bigger sale going on). While the PL-330 is usually around $80 (non sale price) currently $65 on anon-co it does have some functions and features that make it worth it (being able to use an external antenna for MW reception, and the ability to calibrate SSB to make sure it's zeroed in on the frequency). The only downside to the PL-330 is the kind of battery it uses, it's hard to find good BL5C batteries.
