And because DVD players were too expensive in Japan and the PS2 was cheeper, consumers mostly in Japan bought the PS2 to play DVD movies because DVD movies were on the rise

The ps2 was actually a DVD player. They sold a remote for it so you did not have to use your controller
Yeah, back in early 2000s, we had a ps2 but my parents couldn't afford a dvd player so we used that. I didn't have a remote though :/

if your ps2 is the later version the top loader you dont need the receiver to plug in, the top loader version has a rf reciever built in to the unite speddy if you have the first model you have to use it. the old remote is a great find

PS2 DVD remotes are common among PS2 accessories, however the one with the sensor & software isn't as common simply cause the majority of PS2 systems have the sensor built in, it was the earliest versions which didn't have the sensor and so needed a separate sensor. Try it without use of sensor first, if it works without sensor you can just kick the sensor to the side or do whatever with it. Also if using with a slim it will work & you assuringly will NOT need the sensor.
Hey speedy. The PS2 remote works with both the fat and the slim models. The receiver is for the fat model because it doesn't have an IR sensor. But the PS2 slim has the sensor built in so the receiver isn't needed.

The playstation remote is for the playstation it self since the playstation 2 can play DVDs that way you don't have to deal with the game controller. When I worked at Movie Gallery we sold those and that's what they were used for.

Totally forgot, the included lecture dvd is so you can install the dvd programming into a memory card if i remember correctly so the remote works with it. I think that was required

The PS2 Remote isn't rare at all. A lot of people bought the PS2 just to watch DVD's so Sony invented this remote so you have a better "controll" about the movie. Because if you want to watch one with a regular PS2 controller you will need a lot nerves[at least I need those].
