- Captured here is brand new Engine 1 of the Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services (VFRS), which was put into service on December 5th, 2023. Engine 1 is a Rosenbauer RTX electric fire truck, making it the first-ever electric fire engine in Canada, and one of the first in all of North America!
The RTX is a state-of-the-art fire truck with many innovative and useful features. It can drive for about 100 kilometers on a single electric charge and can pump water for about two hours. It has all-wheel-drive and an adjustable suspension, which can make it easier for firefighters to enter and exit the vehicle, or adapt it to drive off-road. The truck also has enhanced maneuverability as all four wheels can turn (all-wheel-steering, countersteering, and crab steering). Apart from this, it saves fuel costs and minimizes firefighter exposure to toxic fumes that regular fire trucks produce.
Engine 1 now serves the Strathcona, Chinatown, and Downtown Eastside neighborhoods of the city, running out of Fire Hall No. 1.
What do you think of this fire truck? Let me know in the comments!

Awesome Video Tim!!! Glad we were able to get this rig in action on the second day of service. Guess our effort was finally paid off after 4.5 hours of waiting and thankfully they got back to back calls:)
Thank you Isaac! At least we got it 😅 And yep, the back to back calls were awesome 👍🏼
That guy was just getting coffee
Why on earth would anybody want to waste 4½ hours waiting for some truck with flashing lights to drive past? You've only got one life, try finding something useful to do with your time.
@@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses want's one Electric Fire Truck!
@@johanrebel Becasue it’s a hobby that many people around the world are passionate about. We hang out together as friends, have a good time, and record lights and siren action. What I do in my own time is not your business. I’m sure you enjoy doing things that I’d find boring or useless, but I don’t criticize you for it.
Awesome video!!

Freut mich 😁
Beautiful vehicle, and great video! I would be interested in the experiences of Vancouver firefighters, how much they like the rtx.
Thank you! So far what I have heard is that they are quite happy with the maneuvering of the truck and the extra space inside the cab.
Ugly vehicle

Great catch! So cool to see

I Wonder how good they are servicing in emergency sittuation, I mean Electric Vehicle servicing in public service is not a new idea, in my city already have electric taxi and even more low deck electric buses, and despite they aren't 100% more comfortable (the AC not as cool as Diesel one, maybe for energy saving) than the diesel one, it's a great idea to reduce air and sound pollution that already a big problem in the big cities. The Idea is the buses or taxis can go like 200-300 KM in full charge and at the end of the day you can charge it all night so in the next day it can servicing again. But in the emergency services, it kinda, you know, unpredictable. So the vehicle sometime exceed more than be able. I think 100 km is enough but if it's doing frequent task, it's like let th battery burn, it's like your phone if you charging it, it will get hot and if you use it for heavy gaming or rendering, it will get hot too. The battery cannot handle it.
"But in the emergency services, it kinda, you know, unpredictable" that's why it has its diesel range extender for the rare but possible scenarios where that backup might be necessary

Thank you very much! 😊
Scotland's fire and rescue service put its very first electric fire engine - MAN - into service a few months ago as well.
What do you call those long lights on the side of the truck? Its super unique
I’m not sure, I think those are made in-house by Rosenbauer as part of the basic light package for the RTX.
I think they don't really have a name. They're just useless design elements that turn invisible at 60ft.

The suspension is adjustable on this truck, it can go off-road and even through floods. What you’re seeing in the video is essentially the regular setting for city driving.

Nice, I actually used to live there for a number of years.
Let me know how often they have to run its company's reserve piece. ;)
@@Stargazzer811 Rancho Cucamonga doesn’t have Pierce, it’s KME Severe Service and Rosenbauer Commanders 😂
@@emvvehicles_8 Oh shit even worse. They'll be using reserves for their reserves! Poor bastards! If they are gonna dump an assload on an RTX they might as well redirect the money and buy Seagraves, at least then they'll have quality. (also I said Piece, not Pierce. Piece, as in Piece of something. See also: other names for fire apparatus.)
Are these units really partial?
What do you mean.
A german one?
Any info on what charger it utilizes and how long it takes to charge up? Must be a pain when you get back-to-back calls without time to top off at a charger.
According to Rosenbauer, “with full power input of 150 kW, charging for just 15 minutes is enough to raise the level of the 132 kWh energy storage device from 50% to 80%.”
40 minutes to take the battery from 0% to 100%, but that would be a very unlikely scenario as the built-in backup generator automatically recharged the batteries if they go below 20%.
62 miles in electric mode though doesn’t sound like a lot of range, you’re not gonna be able to go very far on battery power especially if the fire is any farther away than that, and the range extender is only used occasionally to save on fuel.
Umm… That’s quite a bit for heavy fire truck. They could drive halfway from Vancouver to Seattle on one charge! 😆 More than enough for a fire truck that only responds to calls in the city limits…
True. Electric Vehicles are not the future. Another fire department buying into the broke agenda. Welcome to Socialism
for urban departments that's more than enough to go through a plain normal shift, and the next and again the next shift. You don't run very long distances within the city and you plug in the apparatus when returned to the station anyway
@@redheadeddude6863 literally a dozen departments bought them already, and even those which have experience with it from the very beginning are mostly happy with it.
City of Vancouver is not all that big. But if you include all the other cities and municipalities that surround Vancouver you have 1.5 to 2 million people plus 3 huge ports
I do not believe that the vehicle was built in Austria when there are the following Rosenbauer plants in the USA:
Plant I Wyoming, USA
Plant II Wyoming, USA
Lyons plant, USA
Fremont plant, USA
(Source: HP of the company Rosenbauer)
So why not in Austria? Imagine what the car would cost if it were produced in Europe and then shipped to the USA. Freight costs and customs duties are also not without.
It was built in Austria. The RTX (or RT in Europe) is mainly being sold on the European market. VFRS actually documented the process of how it was built in Austria. It does cost a lot indeed.
@@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses You know why I don't believe that? There's one at the LAFD. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) has played a major role here. The LAFD worked together with Rosenbauer on the North American version. An example of this is a modified diesel engine and other battery sizes. . For Rosenbauer Austria, it would certainly not be worth taking such a high cost risk just for a single vehicle. In addition, the American prefers to produce in his own country before importing anything. That's why I don't think it was produced in Austria, but rather in the USA.
@@karstendoerr5378 Ok, regardless, it was produced in Austria. That is not up for debate, it’s simply a fact. Look it up if you don’t believe me, you’ll find it online. Rosenbauer does not produce this model in the US.
@@karstendoerr5378 as for the RTX from the LAFD you can see posts with pictures of it at the Rosenbauer HQ and plant 1 in Leonding, Austria, right next to their office building. It was in fact built there.
"the American prefers to produce in his own country before importing anything" we know there are exceptions; There are a few European trucks running in North America ... from Unimogs to Tatras, and even half-American-half-European trucks which were built for departments in Europe were imported to the US after some time.
@@EnjoyFirefighting , Okay, you're right. Why did I come to the statement? Unimog did not sell its vehicles there directly, but via Freightliner. It also belongs to Daimler, but it promises a better sales. And that's why I wonder why Rosenbauer doesn't have this vehicle built in its American branch.
I heard on January 2nd 2024 it's out of service and it's still out of service. That's pretty bad for a new truck 👎.
Incorrect. It’s currently in service. It did have an issue a few months ago, which was fixed. New trucks needing tweaks/ repairs/ adjustments and being out of service is nothing new and happens almost every time there’s a new addition to a fleet.

I'm happy most of the top comments are all positive. There is a deranged, anti EV cult that come to videos like this and cry nonstop about how "better" their obnoxious exhaust diesel engines are.
I know, the amount of hate is incredible! So many people who are afraid of change and scared of anything that’s new and different. Of course the majority of people leaving negative comments also do no research at all, and have 0 understanding of the subject.
Lets hope it does not have Lithium Ion batteries otherwise could be very embarrassing!!
Ew.
I will be surprised how long the truck will survive before it burns itself 😢 I my town a parking for 400 burned completly because of two eletric cars. I will never trust this Technology. 😊
The same type of electric fire truck has been in service around the world for several years already, and I am not aware of a single one catching on fire. But I get it, new and different things tend to be scary to some…
Well this proves it. Fire service has officially turned gay.
Boohoo. Another one who’s scared of change!
Listen bud, most fire departments spend MILLIONS on fuel each year. Vancouver most likely bought one to test out the savings of using an EV, to see if they should adapt more to their fleet.
Wow what a wasted engine. Coal is bad for the environment but copper, lithium and other metals needed for battery powered vehicles isn't. We are being conned and lied to.
What about fossil fuels and pollution lol
what about all the oil? Oil rigs, chemical plants etc?
It has lights enough for a medium-sized European Christmas-market
True lol 🤣
looks nice. good video
Thank you!
Dose it carry a Q siren?
No. Vancouver doesn’t use Qs.
It'd drain the battery after they pinned it the 1st time outta quarters.
Sweet catches!
Cool that the VFRS initials can be lit up too
Hope to see one in person soon!
Thank you!
Yep, I think that’s a really cool feature.
Gotta say the look of the truck is growing on me, especially in Vancouver livery!
That is a neat truck. Yeah, I'd prefer the traditional North American look, but neat none the less. Adjustable suspension and crab capabilities really make it a game changer
Agreed. Thanks for the comment!
Awesome Catch Tim!
Thanks!
This will work out as well as all the electric public transit buses parked broken down 😂
Not sure which buses you are referring to, but this truck is working out quite well actually. More and more departments around the world are getting them. Some have already used them successfully for years and are ordering more.
Hating on new things just show how closed minded you are. We have had diesel electric hybrids since ww2 in submarines and it worked out. This won’t replace everything but it has a chance to do well in urban built up areas. If you hate evaluation and change might as well get your local fire department to go back the horse drawn carriages.
Responded without head lights 😅
Correct. That’s one thing they forgot… But I think they had enough flashing lights 😆
@@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses yeah enough lights to lighten up the road 😅
What if they return to station? Can’t use flash light for this
@@royyingYou see them returning to the station in the next clip after the first response and the headlights are on.
They were afraid the battery would run out if they switched them on.
Cool video and not your fault at all but I got to say I prefer what pierce did with their electric truck, keeping the traditional look with it!
Thanks! No offense taken haha. Honestly I’m also not the biggest fan of the overall design/ look of the RTX, but I also don’t hate it just because it’s new and different (like a lot of people seem to do without understanding the tech or doing a bit of research). If this truck catches fire while charging could they pull it out of the fire station fast enough to save the other vehicles ? Maybe they should build an additional heated structure to charge it in for safety ?
If this was an actual safety concern you would see no electric vehicles being parked indoors at all. Come on.
It seems that there are safety concerns for these big lithium batteries . When they start burning they are almost impossible to put out and the fumes that are released are VERY toxic .

What are the reliability stats? How many times has it been out of service because something was either broken or not functioning right?
Cant say yet for VFRS Engine 1 because it’s only been in service for about a week now.
But there are statistics for LAFD Engine 82, which has been running for over a year. In about 6 months it completed 1482 calls, drove 6112 kilometers, operated for 1185 hours, and did almost 100% of that purely on electricity. Not to mention almost $10,000 USD in fuel savings for LAFD.
You can take a look at the Rosenbauer website for the full info sheet: rosenbaueramerica.com/rosenbauer-revolutionary-technology/
the concept truck was tested among others also at the FD in the German capital city. It was tested for 13 months and it had less downtime than equally new diesel powered apparatus. It went to well, that the FD bought the apparatus after the trial phase and ordered even more units

New fire truck
Brand new! 🤩
2 hours to drain the power. How long does ut take to fully re-charge?
Yes, and if that were to happen then the backup generator kicks in, essentially giving it the same endurance as a diesel powered truck.
According to Rosenbauer, “with full power input of 150 kW, charging for just 15 minutes is enough to raise the level of the 132 kWh energy storage device from 50% to 80%.”
I don’t know how long it would take to charge the batteries from 0% to 100% (should not be long though with the proper charger infrastructure at the station). And you have to consider that draining the battery to 0 would be an uncommon scenario for day to day use of the truck.
40 minutes if the battery was at 0%, which won't happen as the diesel kicks in when it's down to 20%

Amsterdam-Amstelland Fire Service (Netherlands) did a trail with the RTX. It didnt work for them and placed it out of service. Never really figured out why though.
I believe the RTX is run now in couple places in Germany, Austria and the United States.
Ah ok, I see. Would be interesting to know why they decided against it. I do see it as a bit of a trial project, to get used to the latest technology.
Yes, multiple departments in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are using it (some have several). Los Angeles and Las Vegas have one, other US cities have them on order, and several Canadian cities do as well.
Why did they decide against it? Because they know its a fad, its a flop and its a failure. They saw the writing on the wall. Unfortunately, here in the US it will take someone dying after one of these stupid things fails to do its job for people to realize that. Until then politicians will decide to keep buying this junk instead of using whats tried and true. If its not broken, don't freakin fix it!
they trialed the CFT, predecessor of the RT, and not the Americanized version called RTX
@@Stargazzer811 didn't turn out to be a failure in case of the Berlin FD. Actually the very opposite: after the 13 month trial phase with the CFT they not only bought the Rescue Engine, they ordered several further ones upon their positive experience.

Very cool but I i think diesel wins here batterys should be for smaller vehicles or limited service like short distance trucking
Doesn’t this quality as short distance trucking? 😄 I think 100 Kilometer range is pretty far for a heavy fire truck that rarely has to drive more than a few kilometers at a time to reach a scene. It’s gonna save a ton of fuel.
Doesn't it need to power the pumps for the water, etc? It may only have to drive a short distance to get to a fire, but has to run for potentially hours to put that fire out. I'd hate to see people die in order for a city to virtue signal owing an EV fire truck.
@@afoolandhismoneychannel Yes it does, that is why it has the backup generator that was mentioned in my video. It can pump water for about two hours (which is going to be more than enough for most fire calls), but if electricity levels get low the generator kicks in and recharges the batteries without the need to plug it in anywhere. That essentially gives it the same operating time as a regular fire truck before it would need to be refueled.
Everything performs well when new. I can see the numbers dropping off as the vehicle ages and then the older technology will have to take over. I wonder what battery replacement cost will be. I also wonder if electrification is more to benefit the health of the crews rather than overall environmental concerns.
So what exactly is the point of buying an EV fire engine? How much higher is the price compared to one with a combustion engine?
Fire departments spent millions on gas each year, which is why they are using EV fire trucks, pretty substantial price different all the time.
@@zoonibutt9334 I would wager that most fire deparments come nowhere near to spending millions on gas each year, they are far too small for that. Not only that, fire apparatus average not even 5,000 miles per year, so they don't use much fuel. The far higher price of an EV truck surely outweights any fuel savings by a very large margin. And the decrease in CO2 emissions is completely inconsequential. Even if every single fire engine on the planet was replaced by an electric one, it still wouldn't make any difference. I figure these token electric fire trucks are nothing but a very expensive form of green virtue signalling.
@@johanrebel Not just a station, a whole department. It can vary depending on the size and the amount of emergencies the city gets. - If every fire engine was replaced with an EV, it is true that it would not make much of a dent.

I'm a firefighter and that square box electric thing just hurts my eyes. No idea why Rosenbroken ( yes, many of us call them that because they tend to always have something broken ) went with a big square design over the more traditional design we know and made it electric, but electric fire trucks and water just seems like a horrible idea. Won't see them much until the tech/batteries is proven and it's not yet when it comes to long term. Not to mention battery costs to replace them when they die. Just not something you will see in large numbers right now. We've discussed these many times.
The design of the RTX is not my favorite either, but I think it looks cool in the Vancouver livery. At the end of the day fire trucks are work tools designed for functionality not looks.
Electric fire trucks, and the Rosenbauer model in particular, are actually quickly gaining popularity. More and more departments around the world are buying them to test the new technology. Some departments have bought multiple. Several in Canada and the US have the RTX on order.
Sure, the technology is not perfect yet, but the automotive industry as a whole is moving away from fossil fuels and towards electric, so it makes sense to invest in this tech now and try it out for emergency services as well.
"Square box thing"? What's weird about it in Canada or the US?
As an European I'm also not fond of that shape (it's utilitarian only), but that is the "traditional" design here in Canada. Not sure what you mean; if anything, it's a refreshing take on the "square box thing".
Right with ya Merkel. I personally don't see a need to even consider hybrid emergency vehicles anyway. Don't get me wrong I'm all for cleaner air and shit, we need to protect the planet if we're gonna have one in 300 years. But this, this isn't the way to do it, especially when you consider automakers have already told us what we've known all along: this new wave of hybrids and EVs are a fad and not sustainable due simply to lack of materials. We also know that their production dumps more toxic gas into the atmosphere than normal car production and the batteries are immensely toxic to the environment, not to mention a bitch to put out when one of these things starts itself on fire.
You realize regular diesel fire trucks still have batteries in them, right? It’s like they designed them to not come in contact with a large amount of water.
"yes, many of us call them that because they tend to always have something broken " well because Rosenbauer America has nothing in common with Rosenbauer elsewhere around the globe. Elsewhere they're rather known for quality, sth which can't be said about their US division which builds entirely different type of apparatus.
"went with a big square design over the more traditional design " because they built the RT for Europe, and only as American departments wanted to have it so badly as they presented their concept truck, they made an Americanized version of the European apparatus.
"but electric fire trucks and water just seems like a horrible idea" absolutely no reason for that. It's not like batteries would be put in one bucket and water in another open bucket next to it. They know how to make things water proof - you know electric cars also work in rain, can drive through fords, and hell there are also electric ships out there.
"Won't see them much until the tech/batteries is proven" these apparatus were long-term tested in real life conditions at several departments already.
Dumbest idea ever in cold Canada.
Lol Vancouver is Canada’s warmest city… Barely goes below freezing here.
works in cold Norway ... which is equally far north
Oh nice... a fire hazard on wheels. This EV push is absolutely idiotic
Always the stereotypes…. Not a single electric fire engine has caught on fire.
@@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses - that’s because it’s new to the market. PLENTY of EV passenger cars have caught fire. It’s a well deserved “stereotype”
@@truthkeeperfilms Incorrect. The Rosenbauer RT has been around since 2014, that’s a whole decade. RT electric fire trucks have been in active service in multiple cities around the world (in vastly different climates and environments as well) for several years now. Again, not a single one has caught on fire.
Yes, electric vehicles are far from perfect at this point, but there is a reason why the world is moving away from fossil fuels. If there was an imminent risk of them spontaneously catching fire they would not be allowed on the roads all over the world. And I am sure you are aware that regular gas powered vehicles also catch fire.
@@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses - And since 2014, those turd batteries lose capacity and degrade putting reliability at risk and in the end, lives at risk. Look at the facts, those cells degrade every year and on average a life span of 15 years.
Very shiny stroboscopes. Not very good
I‘m not sure what you mean?
@@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses very bright stroboscopes at night have some discomfort (can to blind) if you drive car.
@@SiberiaXc20You’re talking about the red and white emergency lights?
@@TGGGlobalEmergencyResponses yes 🤦 what's not clear?
@@SiberiaXc20I’ve never heard anyone call them “stroboscopes”…..
.....and has a backup diesel engine....." LMAO!!
well in contrast to other apparatus which run on diesel every single call, every medical call, every false alarm, this one might run on diesel once a month ...
Well said.
I was kinda hoping it would have a European siren on it!
It comes equipped with whatever the customer (fire department) wants 😄
