- They sound almost identical. Definitely the best voice. It fits Tails perfectly.
2. Alicyn
- Really close to the first two.
3. Amy
- She was the first woman to voice Tails and laid the foundations for the next voices. However, she had some annoying moments like in 06. Her best performance was definitely Unleashed.
4. Ashleigh
- It’s not bad. I just can’t unhear Rainbow Dash from MLP.
5. Connor
- Definitely the best boy voice for Tails.
6. Corey
- Not as good as his brother, but still decent.
7. 8. And 9. Christopher W, Bradley, and Christopher T
- They’re ok, but sound too cartoony.
10. William
- He’s annoying, but funny. I can’t unhear “It’s a fake”
11. Lainie
- Ew. Somehow even more annoying than William. Don’t know what they were thinking with this voice.
Funny, I think it's the opposite, I think the boys do Tails better, especially since Tails himself is literally portrayed as a young boy.
Of course it's very subjective depending on whether you're used to Tails having a somewhat female ring to his voice or not. After all, he's sounded that way for around 20 years now.
RD literally went from calling Twilight an Egghead for being smart to literally becoming an Egghead herself lol!!
@@StatickyCatwell personally I think that this is the way it is: Kids have better voices and fits the character more, but women have better acting and provide longevity. For today’s standards, in the current games, Colleen should stick to the role, but if they bring back Classic Tails like they did in Generations, they should have a kid voice him, since it’s a different and more uncommonly-seen iteration of Tails.
My ranking would probably be something like this:
1. Colleen Villard
2. Connor Bringas (My favorite kid voice and he’s tied with Colleen, but I’d rank Colleen higher for the longevity she provides.)
3. Kate Higgins (Similar to Colleen but a bit less snarky and has less character but did give Tails a more mature sound.)
4. Ashleigh Ball (cuz she actually sounds like a boy.)

Corey Bringas really makes it sound like Tails should: young, but male.

Him and his younger brother were real authentic. But his younger brother Connor really nailed the scientific aspect of tails personality imo.
Or rather, Connor made tails sound more confident and sure of himself.
I grew up with both of them and as you could probably imagine Tails' sudden voice change in 2006 was quite the suprise to me, but a welcome one.
To me he is always going to be the best tells voice
I'm only vaguely familiar with Colleen as Tails, but considering most of her Sonic VA work is Boom, followed by Forces, which are not popular or beloved, it's a testament to her talent that people love her in the role and to the movies and Frontiers for turning the franchise around :D

My top choices are:
Colleen o’shaughnessy- sounds similar to Kate Higgins but with a lil bit more personality, snarkiness and inflection to the role which gave tails more youthful energy imo.
Kate Higgins- I believed she walked so Colleen could run. Her tails pretty much covered what you’d expect tails to sound like. Cute voice.
William corkery: just an all around adorable voice. Very fun to listen to. He truly sounded like sonics little buddy and his raspiness really boosted his cuteness to the maximum . Always thought he sounded the cutest since I got the sonic heroes when it came out. He definitely sounded the youngest (like a 7 year old) compared to the other video game tails voices.
My least favorite:
Liane frasier- just wasn’t feeling it. Didn’t believe she sounded any where near a child would sound. But I love when her tails got annoyed with sonic, an aspect of their relationship we hardly see.
Amy palant- wonderful voice actress but her tails sounded way too feminine for me. She sounded more like a young woman than a little boy.
Honorable mentions:
Corey bringas: can never go wrong with having an actual boy voicing a young boy character. Plus his tails is nostalgic.
Connor bringas- same as his older brother but his tails sounded more scientific, confident and sure of himself. That’s something I’ve always liked about his take on tails.
Ashleigh ball: her take on tails was probably the most different, she gave tails a real boyish and rugged sound which worked because we meet tails variant nine who grew up in a crappy environment. So she portrayed him as having a tough exterior, stubborn but clever which is a unique take on the character we all know and love.
I grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s so the Bringas brothers will always be my faves, with Corkery as an honorable third.

I agree with Colleen, but Corey and Connor take the spots of Kate and William for me. Though to me Kate and William are decent. Ashleigh is another one of my favorites since she blew me away in Sonic Prime the first time I heard Tails in Sonic Prime. Amy Palant and Lainie Fraiser are also my least favorites. Amy sounds too feminine and scratchy, while Lainie sounds like she has a cold. Also do you have an opinion on Bradley Pierce and Alicyn Packard? For me: Bradley is my favorite Classic Tails voice and Alicyn is okay, but not as great as Colleen.

As far as sonic drone home’s tails voice actress.. she sounds like a more feminine Colleen tails voice, where there are some hits and some misses but doesn’t bring anything entirely new, just a cover. Which isn’t a bad thing.

They all nailed their roles as tails. They each fit their eras perfectly. Im glad colleen reprised her role in the movie. My fan favorite is amy tho mostly cuz the 2000s era cast for sonic characters was hands down the best imo.

I can't decide between Colleen and Amy Palant, I really love both as Tails
Colleen definitely and obviously. Amy makes Tails sound annoying and like a girl. Also it should be between Colleen and Kate since they actually sound similar and Kate is closer to Colleen and better than Amy. However between them but only in my opinion, Colleen wins by a landslide since unlike Kate, Colleen sounds fun and snarky as Tails. As a fact, they’re a very close tie. For me it’s between Colleen and Connor Bringas since they both do awesome as Tails.

Coleen and kate higgins clear by a mile, but Ashleigh did well too. I think Colleen just kinda is tails to me at this point tho tbh, her voice fits the character best imo. also maybe unpopular but i don't really like when they got actual child actors to do the voice acting really.
tbf women voicing child characters has been this "animation TV only" thing some games and high budget movies still do this to this day though I think over years you see less and less of that happening especially in franchises where they want to have as much consistency in the voice acting with the same character popping up. In an interview Colleen stated her playing tails in the movie and getting credited will help the professional voice acting industry and it probably will as it's a VA playing a character that doesn't resemble the person IRL. lots of well known characters likes bugs bunny etc don't get much credit and sometimes are just left uncredited in high budget stuff

@JustAnAverageSonicFan it's like professional emoting skills I think, I'm not quite sure what it is but something about it just doesn't appeal to me. They did well but I have no attachment to them. I'm also 18 ATM so I also grew up post-SA2
I grew up in the late 2000s and first heard Tails in Unleashed in 2015, still like the boy voices better, but not by much. They're all pretty similar IMO.
Subjective as this is, I think I like the boy voices because they sound a more unhinged in their speech, more like Tails is a kid. The women voicing Tails have a similar high pitched sound, but the speech delivery is more mature, making Tails feel more mature. Which fits modern Tails because modern Tails does act very mature.
Back 20 years ago and more Tails seemed like more of a child-like person, so either way fits IMO.
I know Ashleigh is Rainbow Dash's voice actor but Tails here sounds more like Spike.

For me it's easily Kate Higgins. She practically IS Tails to me whenever I think of Tails's voice but Colleen O Shaughnessy and Amy Palant are also really good

I honestly find it disappointingly bland and hypocritical when people like you pick Colleen and Amy yet don’t even pick Kate Higgins. Even though Kate is outdated in the role she created a standard Tails voice for Colleen to take and make into her own, so you should appreciate Kate for Colleen.

I truly believe that William corkery only got to do tails because his dad voiced Espio and his sister voiced charmy, no other reason.
I’m mixed on his performance as Tails, I don’t mind it too much but I feel like his performance could’ve been a bit better, but yeah he felt more like a convenience route for Sega tbh.
I think William's "unprofessional" performance just makes him sound more authentic than all the others. It sounds like he was having the most fun and worrying the least about the "perfect speech and tone delivery" stuff.

Funnily enough, Knuckles actually has just as much voices as Tails. You have both Classic Knuckles voices, Bill Wise and Brian Drummond, the Adventure actors, Michael McGaharn and Scott Dreier, plus Ryan Drummond who voiced in Sonic Shuffle after Michael left, Dan Green, Travis Willingham, Dave B. Mitchell, Idris Elba with Fred Tatasciore covering for him in Drone Home, and Adam Nurada with Vincent Tong covering the other universal versions of Knuckles in Prime. That should be 12 voices, unless you refuse to count Ryan, Fred, and Vincent, which would make it 9, but they do sound *slightly* different from Michael, Idris, and Adam. Pretty cool, huh?
I personally find it better sounding when tails is voiced by actual young boys, but I can see why they don't do it because it's inconvenient to constantly switch em out cuz they get older and their voices change. But it doesn't mean I dislike the female voice actors sonce most of the time his voice is prety consistent

I'm somewhere between Kate and Colleen, but I think I prefer Colleen's voice, specifically her voice acting in Movie 2.
Ashleigh Ball is also a good voice actress, but I don't think she manages to convey as much "intelligence" as the other voice actors. She fits more on Nine than Tails tho.
Edit: I think Lainie could reprise her role as Classic Tails in a future Classic Sonic game, her voice is so cute.
I personally thought Ashleigh’s depiction of Tails/Nine was the most focused/cerebral/true genius version of Tails. I think it’s because her line delivery is more subtle in prime-less flair and pride than with Kate and Colleen’s line deliveries. The writing and line coaching given makes all of the difference, esp. given that Sonic Colors and Sonic Boom have a lot more humor than Sonic Prime. Ashleigh’s Tails does fit a darker character like Nine, but I still positively love it!
Lainie? Reprising her role? Ahahahahahaha hell no. She didn’t fit Tails at all and she made him sound like he had a cold, she sounded forced the entire way. It would be better if they had a young boy do Classic Tails instead, since Lainie only did Classic Tails because anime dubs won’t allow kids to voice in them.

A little unrelated, but if Whisper is introduced into the games, I feel like Kate could come back. Maybe if she reprised her Tails voice and pitched it up and lowered the volume a bit, it could fit well

Me too, but I think Connor Bringas and Colleen O’Shaughnessey were improvements over Corey Bringas and Kate Higgins. Ashleigh Ball is definitely one of the best for making Tails sound like a boy, but tbh now that I know it’s a girl, it’s easier to tell that he’s voiced by a woman. But still she had a very impressive range and voice for Tails.

They all sound fairly consistent, thankfully. Meanwhile, Sonic's voice has varied horribly. Sonic will always sound like Jaleel White, to me. Anything else is just wrong.
For me, it's Jaleel White and Ryan Drummond. Those are the two who nail Sonic's attitude and swagger the best.

Connor Bringas is the definitive male voice. He sounds enthusiastic, confident, and intelligent. He captures the scientific aspect of Tails very well. Although Corey is the one who set the bar for his brother and is more experienced in voice acting, I just think Connor just sounded perfect. Call me crazy, but I think if they could use the helium balloon trick to temporarily alter the vocal cords and maybe Corey could voice Tails and sound somewhat relevant to how he sounded in Shuffle. If that’s not the case, then he would do a good voice for old Tails, at least.
Colleen O’Shaughnessey is the definitive female voice. Her voice just works so well. She sounds more like an 8-year old boy than Kate Higgins. She makes Tails sound smart just like Connor. Her best performances were the Sonic Movie 2 and Sonic Frontiers (and the rest of the games afterwards.)

Honestly if I had to pick a VA for the next sonic game I think Ashleigh Ball is a great choice. Sounds like he hit puberty and I honestly think it's the best sounding out of all of them (besides Corey and Connor but I think the portrayal of tail would be too young for the current tails).

I decided to rank each Tails actor again.
1. Colleen O’Shaughnessey: What I hear when I think of Tails. Colleen managed to take Kate Higgins’s take on the character and alter it as if you wanted to be friends with him. Colleen has more personality, sounds snarkier, and sounds a bit less feminine.
2. Connor Bringas: I do love Colleen and Connor equally, but I’d have to go with Colleen. Nonetheless I loved Connor’s voice for Tails in Sonic Adventure 2. Like Colleen, Connor has a more intelligent feel to Tails and sounds more cheerful than Corey. Plus due to the improvement in the voice direction, Connor showed more emotion than Corey. Best kid voice for Tails.
3. Corey Bringas: A great first voice for Tails and his acting was very steady, though he sounds a bit monotone sometimes. His delivery is good and there are some scenes where he shows emotion, but he still sounds a bit too modest. He did improve in Sonic Shuffle while he could.
4. Ashleigh Ball: When I first heard Tails in Sonic Prime, I legitimately thought a boy was voicing him. No seriously. It could be because I didn’t really care about voice actors when I first watched Sonic Prime, but this voice still blew me away. I couldn’t believe how incredibly boyish Ashleigh made Tails sound. The only flaw with it is that she doesn’t really capture the scientific aspect of Tails’s character as well as Colleen and I’m sick of those bronies saying that it’s just her role as R••nb•w D•sh (I’m not saying that cringe character’s name) when it’s not. They sound nothing alike.
5. Bradley Pierce: Best Classic Tails voice. He has a good amount of rasp which makes him sound more fitting for Classic Tails than the other kids that played Tails in the DiC cartoons.
6. Alicyn Packard: She’s okay, she sounds kinda close to Colleen, but I can still tell it’s a woman voicing him. Still not bad and better than Kate.
7. Kate Higgins/William Corkery: To me, they’re both decent. I can understand why people loved Kate Higgins and didn’t like William in Heroes, but I feel like with these two people go a bit too far with their tastes. Kate overall did fine, but she sometimes sounds bored to me. On top of that she did the same generic overdone boy genius without any character type of portrayal, even if it was the voice direction, and I didn’t find it that interesting. As of now, with Colleen succeeding in the role, Kate is really outdated and it’s hard to see her replace Colleen again in the role. However she was a huge step-up from Amy, but it gets annoying that people keep whining about her being gone and can’t accept Colleen in the role. As for William, I didn’t like hearing the voice at first, but it did kind of grow on me. I don’t think it’s terrible, but I feel like the problem with it is that it feels like it came at the wrong time. Coming from Adventure 2, Tails didn’t sound the same which made his character feel out of place. I guess it was because he was too young compared to the Bringas Bros who were 12 and 13 when they voiced Tails. If he had time to grow he would’ve done better. But to be fair, William did give him more emotion and of all the 3 kids, he sounded the least like he was reading off a script. On top of that he improved in Sonic Battle which makes me think he had potential, but at the moment, I think this voice would fit Classic Tails more.
8. Lainie Fraiser: Too nasally and squeaky for my liking. Tails in the OVA sounded like he had a cold at all times. She at least sounds a bit more like a boy than Amy.
9. Amy Palant: Probably my least favorite. Her voice sounded way too feminine and overall really scratchy and ear-grating. On top of that, you could blatantly tell that she was literally trying to sound like the Bringas Bros in 06. In Shadow The Hedgehog, she didn’t fit Tails and felt out of place. I don’t see any appeal in Amy this point.
10. Kate Higgins (Classic Tails voice): Even more annoying and feminine than Amy Palant. Her voice was way too high-pitched and unfitting for Tails. I wish Sega would’ve hired a kid to play Classic Tails, since Kate went beyond her range to make Modern/Classic Tails different, but no, instead, they decided to be cheap and reuse actors and push them past their limits. It’s just like how they wouldn’t get Ryan Drummond back to voice Dreamcast Sonic.

I really like Ashleigh Ball, Corey Bringas, and Connor Bringas. Also I don’t like William Corkery’s voice for tails because I think Tails should sound a bit older than that

I agree with the Bringas Bros and Ashleigh, but can you blame William? William was only 10 when he voiced Tails in Heroes, unlike the Bringas Bros who were 13 and 12 when they voiced him. If he was given the opportunity to voice in Shadow The Hedgehog along with the rest of the Heroes cast, he would’ve sounded older and better. Also he did improve a bit in Sonic Battle and did bring the character to life, just like every other voice actor in Heroes.
