  • From the first week of ownership, the 2022 tundra has let me down. It needs some tweaks and changes to make it what was promised. This is truly the end for my tundra.

My 2022 tundra I bought in March was a pain in the arse compared to my 23 tundra I purchased in October. Big improvement in quality, but still some teething issues with my 23, such as my rear sliding window vibrating when rolling down and exterior window trim pieces on the back glass peeling. But compared to my 22 that had the connectivity issues with apple car play and screen resetting etc… none of that.
I agree with you that Toyota can and should improve the tundra and all their vehicles for that matter. I watched a video of Mike Sweers talking about a change in plastic standard that they made regarding unseen plastics that they would typically not install in vehicle’s due to blemishes or being out of spec but due to Covid and parts shortage they lowered the standard to use these parts because they were out of sight and still useable. I think that thinking and process has definitely impacted the quality. Anyways enjoy your 4Runner. I had a 2020 and that also had some teething issues and I tried ford and chevy in between my last two tundras and I’m back in a tundra so that should tell you something. I would take the minor issues I’ve had cosmetically over serious mechanical and electrical issues I had with the Chevy and ford.

@@vinhdoan3629 unfortunately they haven’t been able to fix. They have attempted it twice and after the second attempt when they replaced the actuator. It helped and sometimes when the weather is warmer there is no issues but when it’s colder or wet it vibrates. I haven’t brought it up yet because I dont want to waste another two days with them to examine it again and then ordering parts and bring it back.

@@stanpersful4723 yeah that sucks I’ve been there before. My 22 f150 had the whole 12 inch screen replaced due to blacking out. Battery replaced due to leak developing. Rear diff developing a nasty leak. Driver side a pillar not being flush with windshield, you could see the nuts and bolts behind the a pillar. Weird stuff with the windows not wanting to roll down but I figured that out from a google search. It’s too bad because ford makes a good looking truck that is very comfortable. But the ten speed transmission in that truck annoyed me the way it slammed around and hunted for gears.

Glad to hear Toyota is taking care of you man. You sumed the truck up perfectly- fragile. Thats exactly how I feel about my 2022. I haven't had any major issues, just small fit and finish issues. I will probably end up selling it or trading it in. I've owned 3 brand new Toyotas. The 3rd gen Tundra has been my worst Toyota experience hands down.

  • @SeanPasell

Interesting. I bought a 22 Pro and took delivery of it in September of 22. I’ve taken it to SC to watch my son graduate from USMC Paris Island, round trip from RI was 1800 miles.
Drove back down to NC Camp LeJune for ceremony gradation from SOI. 1500 miles round trip.
I drive all over New England for work and thank God I haven’t had any issues related to the engine at all.
The one issue I have had was a leak in the moon roof. I noticed a musty smell in the cabin and found the rugs under the driver seat were wet. Not soaked but wet.
The smell got more intense. I took to dealer and they found that the drain tubes that are located in the roof, which actually drain down the side of the door panels and out below the truck, had come apart and leaked.
They replaced all the carpeting and did a full test for mold etc. they also replaced my shaky headliner as well.
That solved the issue. No issues since.
I did fall victim to the cracked seat issue and they replaced that recently. And finally I had to pay for two new tires of the 4 (Toyota paid for 2) at 28k miles due to the uneven wear.
Now we have the recall and Toyota will pay for the other two.
I ended up buying an extended warranty recently before my Pro hits 36k. Cost me $2k for additional 100k miles Platinum warranty just because I know if something does happen it’s gonna cost me double or triple that if out of warranty.
Noise wise I do agree with this reviewer. Occasionally I’ll hear things but they seem to go away and are mostly rattles related to that cheap plastic stuff he’s talking about.
But man does this truck move. Wow.
Only thing there is that if I’m driving 60-65MPH and need to accelerate quickly there’s a slight hesitation and then it kicks and goes.
Lastly when I did replace my tires with Falken WildPeaks my MPG dropped from 18.9 on average to 16.3 right now. I learned that even though I replaced them with the “same” tire it’s not exactly the same. The ones I received are heavier with a deeper tread and I believe that the OEM tires are designed for better fuel economy and ONLY available when you first purchase the vehicle.

I think people keep pointing to design flaws, and for most of the truck id disagree. What I see are mainly QC issues. The V35A engines that come from japan for lexus didnt have these problems. The Lexus 10 Speed from japan also never had these problems. Hell, even the G16E GTS from japan doesnt have these problems and id say that engine is under way more stress. This is a problem with Toyota's US Manufacturing plant for the Tundra, its clearly been a long time since they have had to transition to a new vehicle, and im willing to bet its the first time for many employees there. Same problem i think will happen with the Tacoma. The only things i think are not QC issues is the seat panel and radio, clear design flaws that need updated parts/software update.
Eventually, i do think this truck will be reliable, once QC issues are resolved.

I had a 2019 tundra that got totaled at 8k miles, so my next choice was a 2020 tundra trd pro. I couldn't be happier... I wasn't tempted to upgrade to the latest generation, not even the slightest. I am hoping that they will consider bringing back the V8 as an option, and improve the quality control all across the board. It pulls a trailer very well, has plenty of power, and drives very smoothly. I don’t have and haven’t had any rattles, creaking, or plastic issues. The only issue I’ve encountered is that the automatic front air dam is currently malfunctioning and stays deployed. I haven’t had a chance for the dealership to address it, but it isn’t hindering me driving it either. This is my 4th Tundra and I won’t purchase another brand ever again.

I fully believe if Toyota switched out their oil recommendation to a 0w-30 or 5W-30 all these issues would go away. 0w-20 is simply too thin for the heat created by a twin turbo engine in an almost 6,000 lb truck. Ford had issues with the coyote in gen 1&2 with the 5W-20 getting too thin and spinning bearings. 21 model year they went to 5W-30 and no more spun bearings.

Don’t expect miracles from your Frontier, I’m trading ours in this weekend due to undiagnosed intermittent transmission issues that the recalls and software updates didn’t fix. It’s always been finicky from day one with random bangs and jerks and hunting but what showed up at the 30k mile Mark was intermittent torque converter lockup at idle in gear that stalls the engine out or lunges you forward. So my wife won’t drive it and I’m over it. Hopefully ours is just a one off, there is a class action lawsuit against Nissan for the 20 and 21 models years for similar though

Bring back radios with dials and actual buttons. I don't want GPS tracking and maps in my dash. I don't need or want Blutooth.

I wanted to get another truck after having FJ Cruiser since 2014. But once the new Tundra came out I quickly crossed it off my list as it just felt so cheap inside and hated all the plastic on the front end. Went with 2023 4Runner, new Tacoma wasn't out and the 2023 was just as bad as the FJ for front seat comfort, even with the power seat adjustments. Funny story I was at Toyota dealer last week to get part for my daily driver Yaris and saw a new Tundra parked in the service area that either got hit in the rear or it was backed into something. Only had slight damage that I could see, but it caught my attention because the 2 lights in the bumper were cracked. I am guess that is backup lights, or is it some type of offroad package lights. Just seemed like a terrible place to put lights as the bumper usually first thing to make contact.

I purchased a ‘22 Tundra 1794 STD bed back in July 2022 (manufactured in May). I’ve had no major issues, now with 25,000 miles.
The minor issues were wind noise from driver’s door gasket (fixed), crinkle noise at head liner passenger side (fixed), RR passenger wind noise (better - reported to Toyota engineering) - warranty extended.
I agree about some of the plastics.
I have towed some with an ~8,500 lb travel trailer and found it to be very competent with the right hitch setup.
Running around gas mileage has been about as advertised, 17 to 18 mixed, 20 to 23 highway with 3 passengers and about 500 lbs of gear in the bed.

Sorry you had such a bad experience, and you are right…Toyota has not been the same for a long time. A far cry from their glory days. I used to be a die-hard Toyota guy but about 2003-2004, I started noticing quality was going down, it was no where near what it used to be. I still continued to buy them because I’d grown to expect great things from them, but the expectations weren’t realized. I’ve since moved on to other brands but I’ve always held out hope they would go back to being the ones to beat. So when the new Tundra came out, we were in the market for a truck and I thought I might get one, even though I was never crazy about the old Tundra, which also seemed cheap inside. I was so eager to see the new Tundra in person, but I was disappointed when it finally came out. Since the release coincided with the supply chain squeeze, the huge markups made it even less attractive. I ended up buying a gently used ‘20 F150 Platinum with the 3.5 ecoboost, and it’s been perfect in the time we’ve owned it. I had another opportunity to look at and sit in a new Tundra while I was helping my MIL buy a RAV4 hybrid, and even my wife noticed how cheap and plasticky the Tundra felt compared to the F150, which feels very solid and sturdy. That’s comparing it to the ’20 model, not the even better 21+. We love the F150 with the 3.5 ecoboost engine, especially with a tune. It’s plenty powerful for a truck and mileage is decent, 17-18 avg with a level kit, 20” Fuels and 33’s.
