    Lived in Oregon for 30 years and there are 2 to 3 tourist that die annually due to sneaker waves. They can happen at any time. We almost lost my father-in-law to one while they were visiting. He was rescued by a Coast Guard Motor Launch 75 yard off the beach. He is a experienced surfer and said the rip tide was stronger then anything he has been in. He was so exhausted he almost gave up when he saw the Coast Guard coming. Thank you to the men and women of the USCG Chetco Station who risk their lives to save everyone else.

      Wow, glad your father in law made it out safely. I had a boss in Houston Texas who's daughters best friend was taken by a rip current as well as her father who dove in to rescue. Didnt know it was that bad in Oregon, good thing to keep in mind when I make a trip up that way one day.

    We lived in Port Angeles, took regular day-trips to Lake Ozette and Neah Bay area.
    Grandma taught us to always watch the ocean and look for waves that seem to be 'stuck' or piling up on each other.
    The signs are there for some time before it gets bad, but on a shallow beach like this it can get bad really fast!

    This is why you never turn your back to the ocean. Born and raised in Oregon, even worked at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. People will take their strollers right up to the tide level and think nothing of it. People will even walk around the rocks during extreme low tides, putting their bodies between a rock and the waves, without realizing a big sneaker wave could catch them any time and crush them up against the rocks.

      Ahh, Neskowin - one of the lovliest sleepy coastal hamlets onthe Coast! As a geological oceanographer out of OSU, I can tell you that normal sneakers are typically due to the nearshore topography and the mixed semidiurnal tidal regime which can often double up on tidal amplitudes forming extra-high surges or sneakers. That being said, the particular tides in this Jan 10 vid are called king tides which are a special extremely-high tide that forms when the Earth is at perigee (closest to the sun during our Northern Hemisphere winter) and when the Moon is directly between the Earth and towards the Sun - or during new moon phase around the 8th-12th of the month! Their technically know as perigean spring tides.

Some people were defending her, but she saw the wave coming and moved incredibly slowly. Of course, I don’t think it would have hurt to yell for her to run either. But the warning signs were obvious here. Those things act like tsunamis, where a massive amount of water is moving as a huge slab.

  • @erikd2256
    @erikd2256 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In my opinion they are mini Tsunami waves. The wave length is too long for a regular wave. What it reminds me of is a possible underwater landslide. Not large enough to create a giant Tsunami but big enough to create a larger than normal wave with a long wave length to it. I also heard the guy say there were lots of them that day. That would coincide with a smaller underwater landslide, that destabilizes the area causing multiple landslides over a period of time. Just my thoughts.
